About blood cancer
Blood cancers affect the production and function of blood cells and include leukemias, lymphomas, and myeloma. They start in the bone marrow or lymphatic system. Treatment is led by haemato-oncologists and may involve chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted agents, and referral for transplant where appropriate.
Signs to watch for
Persistent fatigue and weakness
Frequent or prolonged infections
Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
Swollen, painless lymph nodes
Bone pain
Unexplained fever and night sweats
Most of these have other causes too. If one lasts, see a doctor.
Who is at higher risk
Increasing age
Certain genetic syndromes
Prior chemotherapy or radiation exposure
Some viral infections
Weakened immune system
Family history of blood cancer
Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will get cancer.
How it’s diagnosed
Diagnosis starts with blood counts and peripheral smear, followed by bone marrow aspiration/biopsy, flow cytometry, and molecular tests. Imaging such as PET-CT stages lymphomas.
Many of these tests can be arranged by your CION team in Vizag.

Who treats blood cancer at CION
Medical and radiation oncologists, led by CION’s haematologist plan your care, and CION’s tumour board of 17 specialists reviews every case. Doctors you can see in the Vizag region are marked.
Several blood cancers respond very well to modern protocols, and some subtypes can be cured. Outcomes depend on the exact subtype, stage, and response to therapy — your haemato-oncologist will explain what applies to you.
2Does every blood cancer need a transplant?
No. Many patients are treated with chemotherapy, targeted drugs, or immunotherapy alone. Transplant is reserved for specific subtypes and relapse situations.
3What does a bone marrow test involve?
A thin needle takes a small marrow sample from the hip bone under local anaesthesia. It takes a few minutes and is the key test for classifying blood cancers.
