Why it costs more

You are paying for reach, not a better sample

This is the most expensive needle biopsy on our list, and anyone quoted it deserves to know exactly what the extra buys. It is not a better test. It is the only way to get to some places.

A hand finds a lump near the surface. A handheld scan sees a little deeper. Neither works behind a rib or inside a lung. A scanner does.

Most of the difference is time in a CT room with the staff that go with it, for 30 to 45 minutes rather than 20. That is the cost, not the needle.

The needle and the sample

The tissue taken is much the same as a core needle biopsy, and so is the report. If a simpler route would reach your target, we use the simpler route.

The ladder is worth knowing before you are quoted. A needle test for cells is the least involved. A core needle biopsy takes tissue where the lump can be reached, and CT guidance is for when it cannot. Nobody here starts at the top of that list.

These are the places a hand and a handheld scan cannot get to. The preparation differs for each, and that is the main reason 2 quotes differ.

Practise a steady breath-hold

For a chest target only. Ten seconds is plenty, and it makes the placement quicker.

If anything on this list is a problem, say so on the call. All 4 can be worked around, and none of them is a reason to put the biopsy off.

Longer than a needle test, because the scanner has to find the target first and check the needle afterwards. You still go home the same day.

FIRST

Getting you into position

You lie on the scanner bed and a short scan finds the target. Position matters more than anything else here, so it is not rushed.

Numbed, then a few short scans

Numbing medicine goes in, then the needle is placed and checked with brief scans as it goes. You feel pressure. The hardest part for most people is lying still.

Watched, then home

A dressing goes on and you rest under observation. Where the target was in the chest that watch is longer, and may include an X-ray.

Eat and drink normally unless you are told otherwise, and take your usual medicines. Tell us if you are on a blood thinner — that one needs planning a few days ahead, not on the morning.

The same wait as any tissue biopsy, because the tissue has to be processed and sectioned before anyone can read it.

A pathologist reads the tissue

Not a machine and not the person who took it. The report then goes back to the oncologist who ordered it rather than to you to interpret.

Not cancerNo cancer in the tissue. Depending on what it turned out to be, you may need follow-up or nothing at all.
Cancer, with a type namedThe report says which type it is and how it behaves. Your case goes to the panel before treatment is decided, and the oncologist explains it to you.

Why does it cost more than an ultrasound-guided biopsy?

Because it uses a CT scanner and the room and the team that go with it, for 30 to 45 minutes rather than 20. The needle and the sample are much the same.

Is it painful?

Numbing medicine goes in first, so what you feel is pressure rather than pain. The harder part for most people is lying still on the scanner bed while the needle is placed.

How long does it take?

Around 30 to 45 minutes for the biopsy itself. Longer in the room than that, because the scan finds the target first and checks the needle afterwards.

You then rest under observation before going home. It is still day care and you are not admitted overnight.

Do I need to fast beforehand?

For most sites, no — eat and drink normally. A few need an empty stomach, and we will tell you when you book if yours is one of them.

Can I drive myself home afterwards?

Better not. You rest under observation before you leave, and it is easier to have somebody with you than to arrange it afterwards.

How long do the results take?

3 to 7 working days. It takes longer than a needle test because the tissue has to be processed and sectioned before anyone can read it.

If extra tests are needed on the sample before the report can be final, it takes longer. We would rather say so than rush an unclear answer.

Do I need to stop any medicines first?

Tell us if you take a blood thinner. That one needs planning a few days ahead, so say it when you book rather than on the day.
