A lump that appears at your biopsy site after the procedure is almost always post-procedural tissue reaction — not tumour growth. The needle causes local bruising and inflammation that forms a firm knot under the skin. This is expected, and in the great majority of cases it settles on its own over several weeks.

What the biopsy site goes through as it heals

  1. The needle creates a small wound

    When a needle passes through skin and tissue to take a sample, it leaves a track of injured cells. This is unavoidable and is not a sign that anything went wrong.

  2. Bruising develops under the skin

    Tiny vessels at the sample site release blood that pools beneath the skin. The area may turn purple, blue or yellow over the first day or two. This is expected.

  3. Your immune system sends in repair cells

    The body responds to any wound by flooding the area with fluid and repair cells. This is what makes the site feel warm, tender and swollen in the early days.

  4. A firm knot forms — this is called induration

    As the repair tissue consolidates, it creates a firm lump. This is your body's healing material, not new cancer growth, and it is the thing that feels so alarming by touch.

  5. The firmness gradually softens and resolves

    Over weeks, as the repair completes, the knot softens and shrinks. For most people it disappears entirely. Deeper biopsies can take longer to fully resolve.

Is this lump actually the cancer?

No. The tumour that was there before the biopsy was already there. A needle taking a small tissue sample does not cause it to suddenly enlarge, and cancer does not grow at the speed you would feel within a few days.

What you are feeling is healing tissue — clotted blood, inflammatory fluid, and repair cells sent by your immune system to close the wound. The timeline is the clearest clue: something that appears within days of a procedure is from the procedure.

This is one of the most common worries after a biopsy, and it makes complete sense. The thing that is new where the needle went in is your body's repair response, not a change in the disease.

When will the lump settle?

There is no single timeline, because it depends on the type of biopsy, how deep the sample was taken, and how your body heals. Surface biopsies tend to resolve faster than deeper ones.

Most post-biopsy lumps reduce noticeably over the following weeks and disappear over the following months. If the lump is still present at your next follow-up, mention it — your oncologist can examine it and confirm it is what is expected.

A lump that slowly gets smaller, or stays the same size and then softens, is almost always healing. A lump that is visibly growing, becoming redder or more painful, or producing any discharge is something to report the same day.

How should you look after the site?

Keep the dressing in place for as long as you were advised and keep the area dry for the first day or two. Pat the area dry after bathing — do not rub.

Do not apply anything to the wound — cream, oil or home remedy — without asking your team first. Do not press or probe the lump. Do not apply heat to the site.

Call your care team the same day if the lump is growing visibly, the skin around it becomes red and warm, there is any discharge, your pain is increasing rather than easing, or you develop a fever.

Questions you may have

Can a biopsy spread cancer cells to other parts of the body?

This worry is understandable, and the evidence does not support it as a meaningful risk with modern techniques. Needle track seeding — where cancer cells escape along the biopsy path — has been studied for decades. ESMO and ASCO guidance both confirm that with modern guided biopsy methods, the risk is low and does not outweigh the benefit of an accurate tissue diagnosis. Your oncologist would not have recommended the procedure without weighing this.

The lump feels bigger than what the scan showed. Does that mean the cancer grew?

Almost certainly not. A scan shows the tumour as it was at the time of imaging. What you feel by hand after the biopsy includes the original mass plus healing tissue around the needle track — together they often feel larger than either alone. Your team uses imaging, not surface feel, to assess what the disease is doing. Bring it up at your follow-up and they can examine it directly.

There is some fluid or a crust at the wound site. Is that normal?

A small amount of clear or pale yellow crust at the wound is a normal part of healing — the wound is sealing itself. Blood-tinged fluid on the dressing in the first day is also expected. What needs a same-day call: discharge that is growing in amount, anything that looks like pus, an unpleasant smell from the site, or increasing redness and warmth spreading around the wound.

It has been two months and the lump is still there.

Two months is within the normal range for deeper or larger biopsies, but tell your oncologist rather than waiting and wondering. They can examine the site and confirm whether it feels like resolving healing tissue or whether any further assessment is warranted. Do not try to judge it yourself — your follow-up appointments exist exactly for questions like this one.

Can I massage the lump to make it resolve faster?

No. Massaging a healing biopsy site can disrupt the repair tissue and worsen bruising beneath the skin without helping resolution. Leave the area alone. If it is uncomfortable, rest is more useful than pressure. Ask your care team before applying anything — including a compress — to the site.

Is it normal for the biopsy site to feel hard?

Yes. Hardness at the biopsy site in the days and weeks after the procedure is the expected result of post-procedural induration — the firm repair tissue your body forms at any wound. It does not feel like the surrounding tissue, which is what makes it alarming. The firmness should gradually soften. If it is increasing rather than reducing, or if the overlying skin is red and warm, tell your care team.

How long will the bruising last?

Bruising after a biopsy commonly fades within a week to ten days, progressing through purple and blue to yellow as the pooled blood is reabsorbed. Deeper biopsies may bruise more extensively and take a little longer. Bruising alone — without increasing pain, swelling or discharge — does not need urgent contact with your team. If bruising spreads rapidly in the first few hours, call the same day.

I am worried the biopsy disturbed the tumour and made things worse.

This is a fear many people carry quietly, and it deserves a direct answer. Modern biopsy technique is designed to take a representative sample with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. ASCO and ESMO both affirm that diagnostic biopsy is safe and that the procedure is recommended because an accurate tissue result — the one that determines what treatment you receive — outweighs the theoretical risk of local disturbance.

The lump is painful when I press it. Should I stop pressing it?

Yes — stop pressing it. Pressing a healing biopsy site increases discomfort and can disrupt the repair tissue underneath without giving you useful information. The tenderness from pressing is from the healing wound, not the disease. Pain at rest that is getting worse day by day is worth reporting to your team, because that pattern is different from ordinary post-biopsy soreness.

When can I go back to normal activity?

Your care team should give you specific guidance based on the type and site of your biopsy. As a general principle, gentle daily activity is usually possible within a day or two, while strenuous effort or heavy lifting should wait until the site has healed. If you were sent home without any instructions, call and ask — you are entitled to that information, and guessing is worse than asking.
