Finance options for cancer

Financial pathways available to your family

Every family's situation is different. Most families use more than one funding source to cover childhood cancer treatment costs. Here are the main options — and how CION helps you navigate each one.

Most common

Health insurance

Standard health insurance and family floater policies typically cover hospitalisation, chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation for cancer. Critical illness riders — if your policy includes one — may pay a lump sum on diagnosis. Our team reads your policy with you, provides the required clinical reports, and coordinates with the TPA so your claim does not hit delays. If your sum insured runs out partway through treatment, we discuss next steps together.

Government schemes

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS & ESI

Aarogyasri Health Care Trust covers many cancer treatment procedures for eligible families in Telangana. CGHS and ECHS cover children of central government employees and defence personnel; ESI covers dependants of insured workers. Eligibility and covered procedures are set by scheme rules. Our admissions team verifies eligibility at your first visit and starts the pre-authorisation process immediately — so treatment is not delayed while paperwork is completed.

Flexible payment

EMI through partner banks

CION works with partner banks and health financing institutions to offer structured monthly payment plans for families who need to spread treatment costs over time. No-cost EMI periods are available on selected products. Our financial counsellor explains the terms, helps you compare options, and assists with the application. We do not want a payment difficulty to cause your child's treatment to be postponed or interrupted.

Bridge funding

Treatment loan (medical loan)

A medical loan is a personal loan used specifically to fund cancer treatment — useful when insurance approval is pending, a scheme pre-authorisation is delayed, or coverage is partial. Banks and NBFCs in India offer these products. Interest rates and terms vary by lender. CION's financial counsellor connects you with partner lenders, helps you understand the total repayment obligation, and assists with documentation so you can access funds without visiting multiple offices.

Charitable support

NGOs & patient assistance programmes

Several charitable organisations provide financial aid, medicines, or logistical support to families who cannot afford childhood cancer treatment costs. CanKids-KidsCan, the Indian Cancer Society, and the Childhood Cancer Foundation India are among the well-known organisations working in this space. CION's social worker can advise which organisations to approach based on your location and situation, and help you complete the application.

CION promise

Free first consultation

CION offers a free first consultation for all cancer patients, including children. The consultation is 45 minutes with a specialist oncologist. You will walk away with clarity on the diagnosis, a recommended next step, and a conversation with our financial counsellor about the likely treatment pathway and cost structure. There is no obligation to start treatment at CION after that consultation. You deserve expert guidance before making any commitment.

Did you know?

Most childhood cancers — including leukaemia, lymphoma, and Wilms tumour — are considered treatable when caught early and managed by a specialised paediatric oncology team. Early diagnosis and uninterrupted treatment are the two factors most within a family's control. Financial barriers that cause delays in starting or continuing treatment can affect outcomes. Acting on your financial options as early as Day 1 of diagnosis is as important as acting on the medical plan.

How it works

How CION helps you set up EMI & funding support

You should not have to figure out the finances alone while also processing a child's cancer diagnosis. Here is exactly what happens from your first contact with us.

1

Free consultation with a specialist oncologist

Your first 45-minute consultation is free. The oncologist reviews the diagnosis, explains what a likely treatment pathway looks like, and answers your medical questions. This gives the financial counsellor the information they need to estimate costs accurately — before any decision is made.

2

Tumour board review & phase-wise cost estimate

Every patient at CION is discussed by the multidisciplinary tumour board. Once the board has finalised a treatment plan, our team produces a written phase-wise cost estimate covering each component of care — consultations, investigations, treatment sessions, hospital stay, and follow-up — for the first treatment phase. You see the numbers before committing.

3

Insurance eligibility check & scheme pre-authorisation

Our admissions team reviews your insurance policy and checks eligibility for Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, ESI, or any other scheme you may qualify for. Pre-authorisation paperwork is completed on your behalf. The goal is to activate coverage before your child's first treatment session — so you are not paying out of pocket for something your policy covers.

4

Financial counsellor discusses EMI or loan options

For the portion not covered by insurance or a scheme, our financial counsellor explains the EMI and medical loan options available through our partner banks and financing institutions. You receive a plain-language comparison of terms — interest rate, EMI amount, tenure — so you can make a decision without pressure. If a charitable fund or NGO application is appropriate, the counsellor helps with that process too.

5

Treatment begins — financial review at each phase transition

Once funding is in place, your child's treatment starts without delay. At each phase transition — for example, moving from induction to consolidation chemotherapy — the team provides an updated cost estimate and reviews your funding position. If anything changes in the treatment plan, you are informed and the financial picture is updated accordingly. Decisions for healing, not billing.

What we cover

What CION's financial counselling service includes

Our financial counsellors are not salespeople. They are trained support staff whose job is to help your family understand and access every financial pathway available to you — at no extra charge.

Insurance policy review

We read your policy with you, explain what is covered, and identify any critical illness riders or floater benefits you may not have activated.

TPA & cashless claim coordination

We liaise directly with the third-party administrator to initiate cashless admission and ensure claim documentation is complete, reducing reimbursement delays.

Government scheme eligibility check

We verify Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, or ESI eligibility at the first visit and complete pre-authorisation paperwork so coverage is in place before treatment begins.

EMI structuring & loan facilitation

We connect you with partner lenders, explain the EMI terms in plain language, and assist with documentation — whether you need a bank loan, NBFC product, or hospital-facilitated instalment plan.

NGO & charitable fund referrals

If your family qualifies for charitable support, we identify the right organisations, help complete applications, and follow up on your behalf — so you do not spend precious time chasing paperwork.

Phase-wise cost estimates

We provide written cost estimates before each treatment phase — not a single large figure — so you can plan your finances one phase at a time and never face an unexpected bill.

Common questions

Your questions about EMI and funding for your child's cancer treatment — answered

Can we pay for childhood cancer treatment in EMI at CION?
Yes. CION works with families to structure treatment costs into manageable monthly instalments wherever possible. Our financial counsellor meets with you at the time of admission planning to understand your insurance situation, savings, and repayment capacity. Based on that conversation, we discuss no-cost EMI options through partner banks and health financing institutions, as well as deferred-payment arrangements for eligible families. We believe no family should delay or interrupt their child's treatment because of financial pressure.
Which government schemes cover child cancer treatment in Telangana?
Aarogyasri Health Care Trust covers a wide range of cancer treatments — including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation — for eligible families in Telangana under its empanelled procedure list. CGHS and ECHS cover children of central government employees and defence personnel respectively, while ESI covers dependants of insured workers. Eligibility, package rates, and covered procedures are defined by each scheme. Our admissions team verifies your eligibility at the first visit and initiates the pre-authorisation process so treatment is not delayed.
Does standard health insurance cover my child's cancer treatment?
Most standard health insurance policies in India — including family floater and individual child policies — cover hospitalisation, chemotherapy sessions, surgery, and radiation for cancer. The sum insured, sub-limits on specific procedures, and the insurer's policy wording on cancer treatment determine the exact coverage. Critical illness riders attached to a policy may pay a lump sum on cancer diagnosis, independent of hospitalisation claims. Our team helps you interpret your policy, provides the medical documentation insurers require, and liaises with the TPA to process claims efficiently.
What is a treatment loan for child cancer, and how do I apply?
A treatment loan (sometimes called a medical loan or health financing loan) is a personal loan used specifically to fund cancer treatment costs. Several banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) in India offer these products, sometimes with zero-cost EMI periods for the first few months. Interest rates and processing fees vary by lender and credit profile. CION's financial counsellor can connect you with partner lenders and help you understand the application process. Loans work best as a bridge when insurance coverage is partial or pending and immediate treatment is required.
Are there NGOs or charitable funds that help families pay for child cancer treatment?
Yes. Several charitable organisations in India support families who cannot afford childhood cancer treatment costs. CanKids-KidsCan, the Indian Cancer Society, and the Childhood Cancer Foundation India are among the well-known organisations that provide financial aid, medicines, or logistical support to families in need. Eligibility varies by organisation, geography, and the family's financial situation. CION's social worker and financial counsellor can advise you on which organisations to approach and help you complete the application documentation.
How does CION ensure costs are transparent before we commit?
After your child's diagnosis is reviewed by the CION tumour board, we provide a written phase-wise cost estimate covering consultations, planned investigations, treatment sessions, surgical fees where applicable, and follow-up visits for the first phase of care. The estimate tells you what each component costs so you can plan. Costs for later phases are estimated once the response to the initial phase is evaluated — we do not give an overall lump-sum figure that may mislead. If anything changes in the treatment plan, you are informed immediately. Decisions for healing, not billing.
