How cashless treatment works for child cancer insurance
Cashless does not mean free — it means the hospital and the insurer settle the bill between themselves. You step into treatment without paying out of pocket first and chasing reimbursement later. Here is how each payment pathway works.
Not sure which pathway applies to you? Call 1800 202 8726 — our admissions team responds within 2 hours.
What your health insurance for child cancer typically covers
Coverage details vary by policy. This guide covers what most comprehensive plans include — and what to watch for. Always ask our billing team to read your specific policy with you.
Room rent, nursing charges, ICU, operation theatre, and associated costs during any hospital admission for cancer treatment. Most policies cover this from day one of the policy year.
Day-care chemotherapy — given over a few hours without an overnight stay — is covered under most modern policies as it is listed as a day-care procedure. Confirm your policy includes the current IRDA day-care procedure list.
Surgical resection, tumour removal, and related anaesthesia are covered under the surgical benefit in most comprehensive plans. Complex or multi-stage procedures may require a higher sum insured to be fully covered.
Radiation sessions are typically covered as day-care under modern policies. Some older plans require an overnight stay for the claim to be valid — our billing team checks this before treatment starts so there are no surprises.
Most policies cover diagnostic tests and consultations in the 30–60 days before admission, and follow-up visits and medicines for 60–90 days after discharge. This can cover biopsy, PET-CT, MRI, and oncology consultations.
Sub-limits on room rent, co-pay clauses, waiting periods for pre-existing conditions (a new diagnosis typically has no waiting period), and annual sum-insured caps can all affect the final claim amount. Bring your policy document on your first visit and we will read it with you.

How to activate a cashless claim for your child’s cancer treatment at CION
Our billing team guides you through every step. You never have to contact the insurer or TPA directly unless you want to.
Bring your insurance card and policy document on your first visit
On the day of your first CION consultation, carry your health insurance card, policy number, and if possible, a PDF or printed copy of your policy schedule. If you use Aarogyasri or a government scheme, bring your ration card or beneficiary card. Our admissions team checks your documents within minutes of arrival.
Billing team verifies your insurer and confirms cashless network status
Our team contacts your TPA or insurance company to confirm whether CION is in your insurer’s network for cashless treatment. If a direct cashless arrangement is available, we proceed with pre-authorisation immediately. If not, we explain the reimbursement process and what documentation you will need — so you can plan accordingly.
Tumour board reviews your child’s case and finalises the treatment plan
Before any pre-authorisation is submitted, your child’s case is reviewed by the CION tumour board — a panel of medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists. The plan they agree on becomes the basis for the pre-authorisation request. This means the insurer sees a fully formed, evidence-based plan — not a vague request — which reduces the chance of partial approvals or rejections.
We submit the pre-authorisation request to your TPA
Our billing team prepares and submits the pre-authorisation package: the diagnosis report, the proposed treatment plan, the treating oncologist’s clinical summary, estimated procedure codes, and estimated costs. We follow up directly with the TPA if there are any queries — you do not need to be the go-between. Most pre-authorisations for planned admissions are resolved within 24–48 hours.
Treatment begins — covered costs billed directly to the insurer
Once pre-authorisation is granted, your child’s covered treatment proceeds on a cashless basis. The hospital bills the insurer for all approved services. If any service is not covered or falls above the approved limit, we notify you in advance so there are no unexpected charges at discharge. For ongoing treatment phases, we re-initiate pre-authorisation at the start of each phase.
Discharge — complete documentation package provided for your records
At discharge, CION provides a complete set of clinical records: discharge summary, all investigation reports, prescriptions, itemised bills, and the treatment plan. This serves both as a medical record and as complete documentation if you need to file any supplementary reimbursement claim or activate a critical illness rider on your policy.
What happens if your health insurance child cancer cover is not enough?
It is a common and completely understandable worry. A childhood cancer that requires two or more years of treatment can exceed a standard sum insured. Here is what we do when that happens.
We identify every source of coverage first. Before concluding that your insurance will not be enough, our billing team reads your full policy — including riders, critical illness benefits, and any employer top-up policy you may not have been aware of. Some families discover a critical illness rider they had forgotten that pays a lump sum directly on a cancer diagnosis, providing immediate liquidity at the most stressful moment.
We check government scheme eligibility on the same visit. Families who are not aware of Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, or ESI entitlements sometimes find they qualify for substantial coverage under these schemes in addition to their private insurance. Our admissions team checks all available entitlements simultaneously so nothing is missed.
We connect you with structured EMI options. For the gap between what insurance covers and the actual treatment cost, CION works with empanelled finance partners to offer structured EMI plans. These are designed around your child’s chemotherapy or treatment schedule, so repayments are predictable rather than a surprise.
We link you with NGO and patient-assistance support. Our social worker maintains active relationships with verified NGOs that support families of children with cancer. These organisations can assist with specific medicines, logistics, lodging for families who travel for treatment, and in some cases direct financial grants. We make the referral on your behalf.
One commitment we make to every family: we will never recommend that a medically indicated treatment be delayed or skipped because of a funding gap. We find the path forward together — call us on 1800 202 8726 or request a callback to speak with our financial counsellor today.
