When is a second opinion right for you?

Situations where a child cancer second opinion is especially valuable

A second opinion is always reasonable — but there are specific situations where it can make the most meaningful difference to your child's care. If any of these apply to your family, a second opinion is a sensible next step.

Rare diagnosis

The cancer type is uncommon or complex

Rare childhood cancers — such as certain brain tumours, sarcomas, or neuroendocrine tumours — require pathologists and oncologists with specific expertise. A second review of the pathology slides and molecular reports by a specialist with high case volume in that cancer type can confirm the diagnosis or identify a different subtype that changes the treatment approach.

Uncertain plan

The treatment plan is unclear or feels rushed

If the proposed treatment was explained only briefly, or if you feel you did not have enough time to understand the reasoning behind it, a second opinion gives you a fuller picture. You deserve to know not just what the team recommends, but why they chose that approach over the alternatives — and a 45-minute specialist consultation provides that space.

No clear response

Treatment has started but the response is uncertain

A second opinion mid-treatment is also valid. If scans after the first treatment cycles do not show the expected response, or if side effects are more severe than anticipated, an independent review can help assess whether the current plan should continue, be modified, or be replaced with a different approach based on the response seen so far.

Relapse

Your child's cancer has returned after treatment

A relapsed or refractory childhood cancer is a situation in which seeking a second opinion is strongly advisable. Treatment options at relapse are different from first-line therapy, and a centre with experience in relapsed paediatric cancers may be aware of clinical trials or regimens that the original treating team has not discussed. At CION, tumour board review applies equally to relapse cases.

Peace of mind

You simply want to feel more certain before proceeding

Sometimes parents do not have a specific clinical concern — they simply want reassurance that the diagnosis is correct and the plan is sound before their child begins a demanding course of treatment. This is a completely valid reason to seek a second opinion. Feeling confident and informed before treatment begins helps the entire family cope better with the journey ahead.

Did you know?

Studies in paediatric oncology consistently show that second-opinion reviews of pathology specimens alter or refine the diagnosis in a meaningful proportion of cases — particularly for brain tumours, soft-tissue sarcomas, and lymphomas. Getting an independent pathology review is one of the most practical steps a parent can take after a childhood cancer diagnosis. Talk to a specialist before you decide

Our oncologists have reviewed second-opinion cases from families across Hyderabad, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. We walk this journey with you — and every consultation is 45 minutes, never rushed.

Pediatric cancer second opinion in Hyderabad — how it works

How to get a second opinion at CION Cancer Clinics — step by step

The process is straightforward. Most families complete steps one and two in a single phone call, and have a written opinion in their hands within two to three days of the consultation. Here is exactly what to expect.

1

Call or fill the form to book your slot

Contact CION Cancer Clinics by calling 1800 202 8726 or by submitting the form on this page. Our care coordinator will call you back within a few hours to schedule a second opinion consultation at the CION centre most convenient for you in Hyderabad. There is no consultation fee — the first appointment for cancer patients is always free. When you book, let us know your child's diagnosis so we can arrange the right specialist for the review.

2

Gather your child's reports and bring them to the appointment

Please bring the complete set of diagnostic documents: the pathology report (biopsy result and, if done, molecular or genetic testing); imaging reports and the actual images on a CD or USB drive (CT, MRI, PET-CT scans); blood test results; and the proposed treatment plan from your current treating centre. If your child's treating team has pathology slides (tissue blocks), please ask them to prepare a set for you to bring — our pathologists can re-read them during the consultation. Do not worry if some documents are missing; bring what you have and our team will advise on what additional records would be helpful.

3

Attend the 45-minute specialist consultation

The second opinion consultation at CION is a dedicated 45-minute appointment — not a brief review. The specialist oncologist reviews every document you have brought, asks about your child's history, and discusses the diagnosis and proposed treatment plan with you. This is the time to ask every question you have been carrying since the original diagnosis. You will not be hurried. If the case involves a diagnosis that benefits from a tumour board discussion, the details will be reviewed by our multidisciplinary team before the written opinion is finalised.

4

Receive your written second opinion within 24–48 hours

After the consultation, our team prepares a written second opinion document summarising the diagnosis as reviewed, comments on whether the proposed treatment plan is in line with current evidence-based guidelines, and — where relevant — notes any alternative approaches worth discussing with the treating team. This document is yours to keep and to share with your original treating oncologist. Many families find it helpful to take the written opinion back to their treating centre and discuss the conclusions together with both teams.

5

Decide the path forward — with no pressure

After receiving your written second opinion you are free to choose whatever path feels right for your family. Many parents return to their original treating centre having confirmed that the plan is sound. Others choose to transfer their child's care to CION Cancer Clinics for ongoing treatment. Both are valid outcomes — our goal is that every parent leaves better informed and more confident than when they arrived. If you do choose to continue with CION, the care coordinator will manage a smooth transition and ensure your child's records are transferred without any gap in care.

Did you know?

At CION Cancer Clinics, every new patient case — including second opinion cases — is reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumour board before a treatment recommendation is made. This means your child's situation is considered by medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and radiologists together, not by a single specialist alone. Decisions for healing, not billing.

Common questions

Questions parents ask about getting a second opinion for childhood cancer

Is it normal to want a second opinion after a childhood cancer diagnosis?

Yes — wanting a second opinion is entirely reasonable, and most oncologists expect it and welcome it. A childhood cancer diagnosis is one of the most serious and life-changing situations a family can face. Feeling the need to confirm the diagnosis, understand whether the proposed treatment plan is in line with international guidelines, or simply hear a second voice before committing to a course of treatment is a responsible step, not a sign of distrust. Experienced oncologists are rarely offended by a request for a second opinion; in fact, many consider it a sign that parents are engaged and informed partners in their child's care.

Will asking for a second opinion delay my child's treatment?

In the great majority of childhood cancers, treatment does not need to begin within hours of diagnosis — there is a period of staging tests, biopsy review, and treatment planning that typically takes one to two weeks. A second opinion sought promptly during this window rarely delays treatment. For cancers where treatment must start urgently (for example, leukaemia with a very high white cell count, or a rapidly growing tumour causing pressure symptoms), the treating team will tell you clearly why speed matters; in those situations a second opinion can often be obtained in parallel, or by sharing reports electronically with another centre. Talk to your treating oncologist about the timeline before arranging a second opinion so you understand how much time you have.

What documents do I need to bring for a second opinion?

To get a meaningful second opinion, the reviewing oncologist needs the complete set of diagnostic and staging documents: the pathology report with the biopsy result; all imaging reports and the images themselves (CT, MRI, PET-CT) on a CD or uploaded to a cloud link; blood test results; any molecular or genetic testing reports; and the proposed treatment plan from your treating centre. At CION Cancer Clinics, our team reviews all of these at the second opinion consultation and can also arrange for our own pathologists to re-read the biopsy slides if there is any doubt about the diagnosis.

Can I get a second opinion if my child is already mid-treatment?

Yes. A second opinion is not only for the moment of diagnosis — it is also appropriate when treatment is not going as expected, when a relapse occurs, when a new treatment option becomes available that your current team has not discussed, or when the cancer is rare and you want confirmation that the approach being taken is appropriate. When seeking a second opinion mid-treatment, it is important to bring current treatment records (drug protocols, cycles completed, response assessments, recent scans) alongside the original diagnostic documents. The reviewing oncologist can then comment on both the original plan and the response to treatment so far.

Is the second opinion at CION Cancer Clinics free?

CION Cancer Clinics offers a free first consultation for all cancer patients, including those seeking a second opinion. During this 45-minute appointment, a specialist oncologist reviews the documents you bring, discusses the diagnosis and the proposed treatment plan, and gives you a written opinion. There is no obligation to start or transfer treatment to CION after this consultation — many families use the second opinion simply to confirm they are on the right path with their existing treating centre. To book your free second opinion consultation, call 1800 202 8726 or use the form on this page.

What if the second opinion disagrees with the first diagnosis or plan?

When two oncologists disagree, it is not cause for panic — it is an opportunity to understand why. Differences in opinion arise most often around rare cancer subtypes where pathology interpretation requires specialist expertise, around the choice between two equally valid treatment approaches, or around the sequencing of surgery versus systemic therapy. If you receive conflicting opinions, ask each doctor to explain the reasoning behind their recommendation. In some cases a third opinion from a specialist centre may be appropriate. At CION, if our review identifies a different interpretation of the pathology or a meaningfully different treatment option, we explain our reasoning clearly and transparently so that you can make an informed decision.

The information on this page is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Every child's cancer is different — please consult a qualified paediatric oncologist for guidance on your specific situation. CION Cancer Clinics does not guarantee any particular outcome from a second opinion consultation.
