Managing PET Scan Cost — as a Family
A PET-CT scan is often a large, one-off expense that the family is expected to arrange quickly. Most health insurance policies cover it when referred by an oncologist — but the paperwork and the calls fall to you, not the medical team.

- Insurance usually covers it — Most policies list PET-CT as a covered diagnostic procedure when an oncologist refers you.
- Pre-authorisation comes first — Many insurers require you to apply before the scan, not after — check before you book.
- Out-of-pocket plans exist — Ask about payment plans when you call to schedule; many centres offer them but do not advertise.
- Your documents carry the claim — A written referral, your policy number and a government ID are the core of almost every claim.

Most health insurance policies in India cover a PET-CT when an oncologist refers you. Call your insurer before booking to confirm whether pre-authorisation is needed. If you are paying out of pocket, ask the imaging centre about payment plans on the day you call to schedule — many offer them without advertising.
CION's PET-CT scans in Hyderabad start at Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
How do you arrange payment for a PET scan?
Get the referral in writing
Ask your oncologist for a written referral or prescription before you book. The imaging centre and your insurer both need it, and it is easier to collect before you leave the clinic than to chase it afterwards.
Call your insurer and ask two questions
Is PET-CT covered when referred by an oncologist, and do you need a pre-authorisation before the scan? Write down the answers and ask for a reference number for the call.
Gather your documents
The insurer will tell you exactly what they need. At a minimum, have the oncologist's referral, your policy number and a government-issued ID ready. Some insurers also ask for a recent diagnosis report or biopsy result.
Submit the pre-authorisation if required
Send it before you book the scan, not after. Approval usually takes one to three working days. If the scan is urgent, tell the insurer when you submit — most have a fast-track process for oncology cases.
Confirm the appointment and settle any balance
Once you have pre-authorisation, book the scan. If you are paying out of pocket, ask on this same call whether a payment plan, partial advance or EMI arrangement is available.
Does health insurance in India cover PET-CT scans?
Most group health policies, individual indemnity policies, and government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY list PET-CT as a covered diagnostic procedure when an oncologist refers you for cancer staging or treatment monitoring.
Whether your specific policy covers it depends on the policy wording. A direct call to the member helpline is the only reliable way to confirm — do not rely on a general summary or what someone else was told about their own policy.
Cashless claims work only at imaging centres on your insurer's network. If the centre your oncologist recommends is not on that network, you may need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement afterwards. Ask the insurer for their network list before you book.
What if you are paying for the PET scan out of pocket?
The cost of a PET-CT varies by city and by the centre. Ask the imaging centre for the full amount when you call to schedule, so there are no surprises on the day.
Many imaging centres and oncology hospitals offer no-cost EMI through a credit card or a medical financing partner. This is not always advertised — ask specifically when you call. Some centres accept a partial advance to confirm the booking and the balance on the day.
Your oncology team's social worker or patient counsellor can tell you about patient welfare organisations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh that provide financial assistance or interest-free loans for diagnostic costs. Ask at your next visit.

Other questions families ask about PET scan costs
What if the imaging centre is not on our insurer's network?
You can still go to that centre, but you will need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement afterwards rather than using cashless settlement. Keep every receipt, and ask the insurer for the reimbursement claim form before the scan day. Some policies have a clause that reduces the reimbursement amount for out-of-network use, so ask the insurer about that too. If cost is a significant concern, ask the insurer for a network centre list and check whether your oncologist can refer you to one of those instead.
Can we delay the scan to give us more time to arrange money?
This is a question for your oncologist, not a financial decision to make on your own. Sometimes there is a brief window where a delay does not affect the treatment plan, and sometimes the timing matters more than it appears. Tell your oncologist plainly that you need time to arrange payment — they may be able to suggest options you have not been told about, or confirm whether the timing is flexible. Do not delay the scan without having that conversation first.
We have two insurance policies. Which one pays first?
In India, most insurers follow a coordination of benefits rule: one policy pays first, and the second covers what the first did not. Which policy is primary is usually decided by which one is older, or by each policy's own terms. Call both insurers, tell each that you have a second policy, and ask them to explain how they coordinate claims. Do not attempt to claim the full amount from both insurers — that constitutes insurance fraud and will result in both claims being rejected.
Does insurance cover the travel cost to the imaging centre?
Some policies include a travel or transportation allowance for inpatient or day-care procedures. Whether a PET-CT qualifies depends on how the policy defines day care and whether the imaging centre is classified as a hospital or a standalone diagnostic centre. Check your policy document under add-on benefits or day-care cover, or ask the insurer directly when you call about pre-authorisation. Do not assume it is covered, and do not assume it is not — ask.
What if the insurer rejects the pre-authorisation?
Ask for the rejection in writing and the specific reason for it. Common reasons include the centre not being on the insurer's network, the referral not meeting the insurer's wording requirements, or the policy carrying a waiting period for diagnostic procedures. Once you know the reason, many rejections can be addressed: ask the oncologist to reword the referral, switch to a network centre, or have the oncologist's team provide a stronger written clinical justification. If the rejection stands and you believe it is wrong, you can escalate to the Insurance Ombudsman.
A whole-body PET-CT at CION is Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — with a free Rs 950 oncologist consultation to talk through your report. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Does Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY cover PET-CT scans?
Yes, PET-CT is listed as a covered diagnostic procedure under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for eligible cancer patients. Eligibility depends on household income level and enrolment status. If you are unsure whether your family qualifies, the patient welfare office at your hospital can check eligibility and assist with enrolment. Ask your oncology team to connect you at your next visit.
How long does insurance pre-authorisation take?
Most insurers complete a standard pre-authorisation for PET-CT within one to three working days. If the scan is urgent and your oncologist has said so in writing, most insurers have a fast-track process that can approve within hours. When you submit, tell the insurer it is an oncology case with clinical urgency. Send all documents together rather than piece by piece — incomplete submissions are the most common cause of delays.
What if we cannot pay the full amount before the scan?
Ask the imaging centre directly when you call to schedule. Many centres accept a partial advance to confirm the booking and the balance on the day of the scan. Some have no-cost EMI arrangements through credit cards or medical finance partners. If neither option is available at that centre, ask your oncology team whether another centre nearby offers more flexible payment terms. Do not cancel the scan without speaking to your oncologist first.
Can an employer group health policy pay for a family member's PET scan?
It depends on the policy. Most employer group health policies cover listed dependants — typically the employee's spouse, children and sometimes parents. Whether PET-CT is covered for a dependant follows the same rules as for the employee: an oncologist referral is needed and pre-authorisation may be required. Check the policy document or ask your HR team which family members are listed as dependants and what the pre-authorisation process is for them.
How does CION coordinate PET-CT scans for patients?
CION does not own imaging centres but coordinates PET-CT through partner centres. Your care team will tell you which centre to go to and provide the referral you need. For billing, payment plans and insurance pre-authorisation specific to that centre, contact the imaging centre directly — they manage their own billing. Your CION care team can help with the documentation you need from the oncologist's side.
