Is PET-CT more expensive than a regular CT scan?
| PET-CT | CT scan | MRI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it shows | Metabolic activity in cells overlaid on anatomy — reveals where cancer is active | Anatomy and organ structure | Detailed soft tissue and anatomy, no radiation |
| How it works | A radiotracer highlights active cells; a low-dose CT is taken simultaneously for precise location | X-ray beams build cross-sectional images | Magnetic fields and radio waves create detailed images |
| Radiation | Low-dose CT plus a small radiotracer dose | Yes | None |
| When oncologists order it | Staging, restaging, or measuring whether treatment is working across the whole body | Monitoring a specific organ, lung detail, or follow-up in a defined area | Brain, spine, and soft tissue where fine structural detail matters most |
| Cost in perspective | Higher — radiotracer and specialist nuclear medicine interpretation add to the price | Lower than PET-CT for most protocols | Varies widely by body part; complex protocols can be similar to or higher than CT |
Does insurance or Aarogyasri cover PET-CT?
Most private health insurance policies in India now cover PET-CT when an oncologist refers you for it as part of cancer staging or treatment planning. Coverage depends on your specific policy — many require prior authorisation, and some apply a sub-limit or deductible.
Call your insurer's pre-authorisation helpline before booking and ask specifically whether your policy requires approval for nuclear medicine investigations. The CION billing team can provide the clinical documentation your insurer needs, including a referral summary and the procedure code.
Under Aarogyasri and other government schemes, PET-CT is covered for specified cancer indications up to a scheme ceiling. The CION billing team can check your eligibility and confirm how much the scheme will pay before your appointment — ask them to do this before you book.
A whole-body PET-CT at CION is Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — with a free Rs 950 oncologist consultation to talk through your report. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is PET-CT covered under health insurance?
Most private health insurance plans in India cover PET-CT when a specialist refers you for it as part of cancer care. Coverage depends on your specific policy — many require prior authorisation before the scan, and some apply a sub-limit. Call your insurer's helpline before booking and ask whether your policy requires pre-authorisation for nuclear medicine investigations. The CION billing team can provide the referral summary and procedure code your insurer needs to process the claim.
Is PET-CT covered under Aarogyasri?
Yes, PET-CT is covered under Aarogyasri for specified cancer indications. The scheme pays up to a ceiling amount; anything above that ceiling is payable by you directly. The CION billing team can check whether your cancer type and stage qualify under the scheme, and how much it will contribute toward the total cost. Confirm eligibility before booking so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
Why is my oncologist asking for the more expensive scan?
The ₹23,999 specialised scan uses an imaging agent that is specific to certain cancer types — including prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours — where the standard whole-body scan would not give your oncologist the information they need to plan treatment accurately. You cannot substitute the cheaper scan and get the same result. If the cost is a concern, tell your oncologist — they can clarify whether an alternative protocol is clinically appropriate, and the CION billing team can check whether your insurance or a government scheme covers the specialised scan for your indication.
How do I prepare for a PET-CT scan?
You will usually be asked to fast for several hours before the scan, and to avoid strenuous exercise in the day before, as muscle activity can affect image quality. If you have diabetes, your team will give you specific instructions about managing blood sugar before your appointment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with no metal. A full preparation checklist will be sent to you when you confirm your booking — follow it carefully, because poor preparation can occasionally mean the scan has to be rescheduled.
How long does it take to get the PET-CT report?
The nuclear medicine physician report is usually available the same day or the following working day. If your oncologist is registered with CION, they will receive a copy directly and can discuss the findings with you at your next appointment. If you need the report urgently — for example, because a treatment decision cannot wait — tell the booking team when you schedule the scan so they can flag it for priority reporting.
Can I book a PET-CT scan without a referral?
At CION, a PET-CT scan requires a referral from your oncologist or treating specialist. CION coordinates scans through partner imaging centres, and the referring doctor determines which type of scan and which protocol is appropriate for your cancer — choosing the wrong protocol can give misleading results. If you do not yet have a treating oncologist, the CION team can arrange a consultation first, after which the appropriate scan can be ordered and booked at the right partner centre.
