Breast Cancer Radiation — What Patients Ask About Cost
The most common questions we hear from patients and families planning radiation therapy for breast cancer in Hyderabad.
What does the indicative radiation cost include?
The indicative full-course cost at CION includes the planning CT scan, dosimetry and treatment planning, all radiation treatment sessions, and on-treatment review appointments. DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) is included in IMRT and VMAT plan costs at no extra charge. You will not be billed separately for any of these components — the written estimate you receive before treatment covers everything.
Why does my technique differ from a friend's?
Radiation technique is personalised to your stage, tumour side, lymph node involvement, breast anatomy, and cardiac risk. Two patients with the same cancer stage can have different recommended techniques. Left-sided cancers require DIBH to protect the heart; Stage III cases needing nodal coverage typically use VMAT. The cost difference between techniques reflects the complexity of planning, not a preference for higher billing.
What is DIBH and is it extra at CION?
DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) is a breath-gating technique used for left-sided breast cancer radiation. When you inhale deeply and hold your breath, the heart moves away from the chest wall and out of the radiation field — reducing the dose your heart receives. At CION, DIBH is included in the standard IMRT or VMAT plan cost at no separate charge. Some facilities bill DIBH as an add-on; CION does not.
Does CION have its own radiation machines?
CION's radiation therapy is delivered at 6 established partner facilities across Hyderabad — in Secunderabad (2 centres), Gachibowli, Somajiguda, Malakpet, and Nampally — on state-of-the-art linear accelerators. The clinical work is entirely CION's: CION's radiation oncologist plans every treatment, reviews the CT simulation and dosimetry, and oversees every session. You get CION's clinical expertise at CION pricing, at a facility close to your home.
How many sessions will I need?
Sessions depend on your technique and stage. APBI: 5–10 sessions over 1–2 weeks. IMRT / IMRT+DIBH (CION default for eligible Stage I–II post-BCS): 15 sessions over 3 weeks via hypofractionation per NCCN guidelines — compared to 25 sessions over 5 weeks at some centres. VMAT / VMAT+IGRT+DIBH: 25–30 sessions. Palliative RT: 5–15 sessions. CION's tumour board specifies the fractionation schedule and explains the recommendation at your first consultation.
Will insurance cover radiation therapy at CION?
Yes. CION accepts major health insurance plans, Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, and ESI. The admissions team handles pre-authorisation from your first consultation. The radiation treatment is billed through CION at CION rates — the insurance claim process is managed on your behalf. You do not need to co-ordinate between the partner radiation facility and your insurer yourself.
Your Radiation Therapy Journey at CION
Five clear steps from your first call to your final radiation session — with CION's oncologist at every stage.
Free consultation with radiation oncologist
Call 1800 202 8726, fill the form, or walk in. No referral needed. The usual ₹950 fee is waived. CION's radiation oncologist reviews your reports, explains your recommended technique, and answers every question — no time pressure.
Tumour board agrees your radiation plan
Medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists review your case together. The recommended technique — 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, or APBI — and fractionation schedule are agreed by the board, not one doctor's call.
Free written cost estimate — every line item
Before any session begins, you receive a written estimate covering the planning CT, dosimetry, all treatment sessions, and on-treatment review. DIBH is included if your plan requires it. Insurance pre-authorisation is initiated by the admissions team on your behalf.
CT simulation at your nearest partner facility
A planning CT is taken at the partner facility closest to you (Secunderabad, Gachibowli, Somajiguda, Malakpet, or Nampally). CION's radiation oncologist reviews the CT images and designs the precise dose distribution for your anatomy.
Sessions begin — under CION oncologist oversight
Daily sessions run at the partner facility. CION's radiation oncologist conducts on-treatment review appointments to monitor your response, manage any side effects, and adjust the plan if needed. Billing is at CION rates — not facility rates.

What is the indicative cost of breast cancer radiation therapy at CION Hyderabad?
Indicative CION costs for a full radiation course: 3D-CRT ₹1.2L–2.55L, IMRT ₹1.76L–3.82L, IMRT + DIBH (left-sided default) ₹2L–4.25L, VMAT ₹2.4L–4.25L, VMAT + IGRT + DIBH ₹2.8L–5.1L, APBI ₹1.6L–2.97L, palliative RT ₹64K–2.12L. What radiation technique will I need for breast cancer?
Your technique is matched to your stage, tumour side, and risk profile by CION's radiation oncologist. IMRT is the most common technique for Stage I–II post-breast-conserving surgery. Left-sided breast cancers default to IMRT + DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) to protect the heart. Stage III cases typically use VMAT. Your tumour board will specify the recommended technique and explain why.
What is DIBH and does it cost extra at CION?
DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) is a technique used during radiation for left-sided breast cancer to shift the heart away from the radiation field — reducing cardiac dose. At CION, DIBH is included in the standard IMRT or VMAT plan cost at no separate charge.
How many radiation sessions will I need?
Sessions depend on your technique: 5–10 for APBI, 15–25 for IMRT/IMRT+DIBH, 25–30 for 3D-CRT or VMAT+IGRT+DIBH, 5–15 for palliative RT. CION's default for eligible Stage I–II patients after breast-conserving surgery is hypofractionation — 15 sessions over 3 weeks instead of 25 over 5 weeks, per NCCN guidelines.
CION's radiation oncologist plans every treatment, reviews the CT simulation, and oversees every session. You get CION clinical expertise and CION pricing at established facilities.
Does insurance cover radiation therapy for breast cancer at CION?
Yes. CION accepts major health insurance plans, Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and ESI. The admissions team handles pre-authorisation from your first appointment. The radiation treatment is billed through CION at CION rates; the insurance claim is handled on your behalf.
Is the first consultation for radiation cost planning free?
Yes. Your first consultation is free — the ₹950 usual fee is waived. Your radiation oncologist reviews your reports and the tumour board agrees the plan. You receive a free written cost estimate with every line item before any session begins.
What is the difference between IMRT and VMAT for breast cancer?
IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) uses multiple fixed beams shaped to the tumour. VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) uses a rotating beam for faster, more conformal delivery — typically used for Stage III cases requiring post-mastectomy radiation or broader nodal coverage. Your radiation oncologist recommends the technique best suited to your anatomy and plan.
