Which Breast Cancer Surgery Is Right for Me?
The surgery your oncologist recommends depends on your tumour's size, location, and stage — and your own preferences. Cost is one consideration, but it cannot be the deciding factor. Here is how the choices are made.
Stage I–II · Small Tumour
Lumpectomy (Breast-Conserving Surgery)
Where tumour-to-breast ratio allows, your surgical oncologist removes only the tumour and a small margin of healthy tissue, preserving the breast. Possible for most Stage I–II patients where clear margins can be achieved. Usually followed by radiation therapy to the remaining breast tissue.
Lumpectomy Not Possible
Simple / Total Mastectomy
When breast-conserving surgery is not possible — due to tumour size, location, or patient preference — the entire breast is removed. Skin-sparing and nipple-sparing variants preserve more tissue for reconstruction where clinically appropriate.
Axillary Nodes Involved
Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM)
When axillary lymph nodes are involved, MRM removes the entire breast along with the axillary lymph nodes. It is the standard procedure when nodes need to be cleared to prevent regional spread, and is performed by CION's dedicated surgical oncologists.

How long is the hospital stay and recovery?
Recovery depends on the procedure:
- Lumpectomy: Day care to 1 night. Light activity resumable in 1–2 weeks.
- Simple mastectomy: 1–2 nights. Return to full activity 3–4 weeks post-surgery.
- MRM: 2–3 nights. Drain management continues 1–2 weeks after discharge.
