Understanding Your Cost

What Affects Breast Cancer Treatment Cost?

Six factors drive most of the variation in cost between patients. Understanding them helps you ask the right questions — and understand the written estimate CION provides before treatment begins.

Factor 1

Stage — Early vs Advanced

Stage I typically requires fewer cycles of chemotherapy and a shorter radiation course than Stage III. Early-stage treatment is almost always less expensive and less intensive. The biggest driver of cost is the stage at which breast cancer is detected.

Factor 2

Biology — HER2+, HR+, Triple-negative

HER2-positive cancers require targeted therapy (trastuzumab and related agents) which adds significantly to cost. Triple-negative cancers may require immunotherapy. HR+ cancers use lower-cost hormonal agents. Your biopsy receptor status is the second biggest cost determinant.

Factor 3

Surgery Type — Lumpectomy vs Mastectomy

Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) has a lower surgical cost than a modified radical mastectomy (MRM). Reconstruction, if planned, adds to cost. The surgical plan is agreed by the tumour board and explained in your written estimate before the operation.

Factor 4

Systemic Therapy — Chemo vs Targeted vs Hormonal

Cytotoxic chemotherapy (e.g., AC-T) has a different cost profile from HER2-targeted therapy (trastuzumab) or immunotherapy (pembrolizumab). Hormonal therapy (tamoxifen, letrozole) is typically the most affordable long-term systemic option. The right combination depends entirely on your report.

Factor 5

Number of Chemotherapy Cycles

A typical early-stage regimen may involve 4–8 cycles. Neoadjuvant (pre-surgery) chemotherapy for locally advanced cancer may run longer. Each cycle carries a service fee plus the drug cost at MRP. The total cycle count is specified in your written estimate — no surprises mid-treatment.

Factor 6

Radiation Technique — 3D-CRT vs IMRT vs VMAT

3D-conformal radiation (3D-CRT) is the standard technique and least expensive. IMRT and VMAT deliver more precise dose distributions and may be indicated for post-mastectomy or complex anatomy cases — with higher per-session costs. Your radiation oncologist will confirm which technique your case warrants.

Insurance note: CION accepts major health insurance plans, Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, and ESI. Your written cost estimate will show your out-of-pocket cost after any insurance coverage is applied. The admissions team handles pre-authorisation from your first appointment. EMI options are also available for self-pay patients.

What Patients Ask

Breast Cancer Treatment Cost — What Patients Ask

Common questions from patients who are trying to understand their treatment cost before making any decisions. Tap to read each answer in full.

Why does treatment cost vary so much between patients?

Two patients with "breast cancer" may face very different treatment costs because breast cancer is not one disease — it is a family of conditions defined by stage, receptor status, and tumour biology. A Stage I HR+/HER2− patient typically needs lumpectomy, short-course chemotherapy, radiation, and 5 years of oral hormonal therapy — a very different (and less expensive) path than a Stage III triple-negative patient who needs neoadjuvant chemotherapy, mastectomy, radiation, and immunotherapy.

The three biggest cost variables are: (1) stage at diagnosis, (2) receptor biology (HER2-targeted therapy is significantly more expensive than cytotoxic chemotherapy or hormonal therapy), and (3) surgery type. CION's free written estimate shows you exactly which combination applies to your case and what each phase will cost.

What is included in a free written cost estimate from CION?

Your CION written estimate itemises every phase of your planned treatment:

Surgery: Surgeon fee, hospital facility fee, anaesthesia fee, and theatre charges — all listed separately. Chemotherapy: CION's service fee per cycle (nursing, monitoring, day-care chair) plus the drug cost at MRP. Number of planned cycles specified. Radiation therapy: Full course cost including planning CT scan and all treatment sessions. Systemic therapy: Hormonal therapy (e.g., tamoxifen, letrozole), targeted therapy (e.g., trastuzumab), or immunotherapy — drug cost at MRP listed separately.

If you have health insurance, the admissions team will identify what is covered and show your estimated out-of-pocket cost on the same document. No verbal ranges. Every line item, in writing, before you decide.

Is Stage IV breast cancer treatment more expensive per year?

Stage IV breast cancer is managed differently from early-stage breast cancer. There is no fixed endpoint to treatment — it is an ongoing condition managed with periodic cycles of systemic therapy, hormonal agents, or targeted drugs, with regular imaging to assess response. Cost is therefore expressed per year rather than per course.

The indicative annual cost at CION for Stage IV (HR+/HER2−) is ₹4L–10L per year, compared to a Hyderabad market range of ₹5.5L–13L/yr. Your oncologist reviews your plan and cost at every treatment cycle — if your regimen changes, your written estimate is updated before any change is administered.

Does HER2+ treatment cost more than other breast cancer types?

Yes. HER2-positive breast cancer requires targeted therapy — trastuzumab (Herceptin) and/or pertuzumab — in addition to standard chemotherapy. A full 12-month trastuzumab course adds indicatively ₹5L–18L to the total treatment cost, depending on the drug's brand and insurance coverage.

This is why Stage II HER2+ at CION has an indicative range of ₹10L–22.5L, versus Stage I HR+/HER2− at ₹5L–12L. Insurance coverage of HER2-targeted agents varies between policies. The CION admissions team will check your specific coverage at the first consultation and show the impact on your out-of-pocket cost in your written estimate.

Can I pay by EMI or use insurance at CION?

Yes. CION accepts major health insurance plans, Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, and ESI. The admissions team initiates pre-authorisation on your behalf from the first consultation, so you are not managing paperwork yourself during treatment.

EMI options are available for self-pay patients. Your written cost estimate will clearly show your total cost, the amount covered by insurance (if applicable), and your estimated out-of-pocket balance. There are no hidden fees added after you commit to treatment.

What is the most cost-effective treatment route for breast cancer?

The most cost-effective route is always the clinically appropriate one for your stage and biology — not the cheapest option in isolation. Delaying surgery or using a sub-optimal regimen to save cost in the short term can result in a more expensive, more intensive treatment at a later stage.

The most significant cost-saving action available to most patients is early detection: Stage I treatment costs ₹5L–12L at CION, while Stage III costs ₹10L–22L. Within the clinically correct plan, CION's transparent pricing — drug costs at MRP, itemised service fees, and insurance optimisation — means you are not overpaying. How It Works

How CION Builds Your Treatment Cost Estimate

Five steps from your first call to a written estimate in hand — before any treatment begins. No commitment required until you are ready.

1

Free first consultation

Call 1800 202 8726, fill the form on this page, or walk into any CION centre. Your first consultation (usual fee ₹950) is free. Bring your existing reports, scans, or biopsy results — or come without anything and we will advise what workup is needed.

2

Tumour board review

Medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists review your case together. They agree one treatment plan — stage-appropriate and guideline-aligned — before any cost estimate is prepared. The plan drives the estimate, not the other way around.

3

Full-phase written estimate

You receive a written document itemising surgery, chemotherapy (cycles and drugs), radiation, and systemic therapy costs. Insurance coverage is assessed and your out-of-pocket total is shown. This estimate is yours — no commitment to begin treatment.

4

Treatment begins

When you decide to proceed, the admissions team handles insurance pre-authorisation and EMI arrangements if needed. Treatment begins on the agreed plan. No surprises — you know what each phase costs before it happens.

5

Ongoing cost tracking with your team

If your clinical plan changes at any point — for example, if additional cycles are indicated by tumour response — you are informed and given a revised written estimate before the change is administered. Your team reviews both your treatment and your cost at every milestone.

Common questions

Breast Cancer Treatment Cost in Hyderabad — Your Questions

What is the indicative breast cancer treatment cost at CION Hyderabad?

Indicative total treatment costs at CION: Stage I (HR+/HER2−) ₹5L–12L, Stage II (HER2+) ₹10L–22.5L, Stage III (triple-negative) ₹10L–22L, Stage IV (HR+/HER2−, per year) ₹4L–10L/yr. These are estimates across all phases (surgery + chemotherapy + radiation + systemic therapy). Actual costs are confirmed in a free written estimate before treatment begins. All figures indicative; source: CION pricing structure.

What is included in a CION treatment cost estimate?

Your free written estimate itemises every phase: surgery (surgeon fee, hospital, anaesthesia, theatre), chemotherapy (service fee per cycle + drug cost at MRP), radiation therapy (full course including planning CT), and systemic therapy (hormonal, targeted, or immunotherapy — drug cost at MRP). Insurance coverage is assessed and subtracted from your out-of-pocket total.

Why does breast cancer treatment cost vary between patients?

Cost depends on stage (early vs advanced), biology (HER2+ targeted therapy is more expensive than cytotoxic chemotherapy), surgery type (lumpectomy vs mastectomy), number of chemotherapy cycles, radiation technique, and whether immunotherapy is indicated. Two Stage II patients may have very different cost profiles depending on their biopsy receptor status.

Is HER2-positive breast cancer more expensive to treat?

Yes. HER2-targeted therapy (trastuzumab and related agents) adds significantly to treatment cost — indicatively ₹5L–18L for a full targeted course. The total Stage II HER2+ indicative cost at CION is ₹10L–22.5L, compared to Stage I HR+/HER2− at ₹5L–12L. Insurance coverage of HER2 agents varies; the CION admissions team will check your coverage at the first consultation.

Can I use insurance or Aarogyasri for breast cancer treatment at CION?

Yes. CION accepts major health insurance plans, Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS and ESI. The admissions team handles pre-authorisation from your first appointment. EMI options are available for self-pay patients. Your written cost estimate will show your out-of-pocket cost after any insurance deduction.

Is the first consultation for treatment cost planning free?

Yes. The first consultation is free — the ₹950 usual fee is waived. Your oncologist reviews your reports, the tumour board agrees a full treatment plan, and you receive a written cost estimate across every phase before any treatment begins.

How do I know the cost will not change once treatment has started?

CION provides the written estimate before treatment starts. If your clinical plan changes — for example, if additional cycles are needed due to tumour response — you are informed and given a revised estimate before any additional treatment is administered.

Is Stage IV breast cancer treatment more expensive per year?

Stage IV breast cancer is managed as an ongoing condition with periodic reviews rather than a fixed-course treatment. Indicative cost is ₹4L–10L per year at CION (vs ₹5.5L–13L/yr at market rates). Costs depend on the systemic regimen and how the disease responds. Your oncologist reviews your plan and cost at every cycle.

The information on this page is for general awareness only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Treatment options, costs, and outcomes vary — all figures are indicative. Please consult a qualified oncologist about your individual condition.
