Skin Care During Breast Cancer Radiation — Simple, Practical Guidance
Most skin reactions are mild and manageable. Your team gives you personalised guidance, but these principles apply for almost everyone:
Wash gently with mild soap and lukewarm water
Pat (don’t rub) the treated area dry. Avoid vigorous scrubbing or washcloths on the radiation field.
Wear loose, soft cotton clothing
Avoid underwired bras or tight clothing on the treated area during your course. Natural fibres are gentler on sensitive skin.
Protect from sun for at least one year after treatment
Apply SPF 30 or higher to the treated area when outdoors. Sun sensitivity in the radiation field can persist long after the course ends.
Ask before applying anything to the skin
Not all moisturisers or deodorants are safe during radiation. Your team recommends specific products and checks your skin at each weekly review.
Stay hydrated and eat well
Good nutrition supports your body’s ability to heal. CION’s nutritionist can advise on eating through the fatigue that some patients experience during a radiation course.
Report anything unusual promptly
