What does a brain PET scan actually measure?

The most common type of brain PET scan uses a glucose-based tracer called FDG. Areas of the brain that are less active than expected take up less glucose, and those regions appear cooler on the scan image. Certain patterns of reduced activity help your neurologist understand what may be causing memory changes.

A different type, amyloid PET, detects amyloid protein deposits rather than measuring activity levels. Your neurologist will have chosen one based on the clinical question they are trying to answer. Both types are reported by a nuclear medicine specialist and sent directly to your referring neurologist.

What to know before your brain PET scan appointment

  • Bring your neurologist's referral letter and any recent brain scans or cognitive assessment reports
  • You may be asked not to eat before the scan — follow the specific instructions in your appointment letter
  • You will receive a small injection of radiotracer before the scan; tell the team about any allergies
  • This scan is not looking for cancer — it is a neurological study ordered by your neurologist
  • Your neurologist, not the scanning centre, will explain what the result means for you

Does a brain PET scan diagnose Alzheimer's disease?

The scan cannot give a yes-or-no diagnosis on its own. It produces a pattern — of metabolic activity, or of amyloid deposition — that your neurologist weighs alongside your symptoms, cognitive testing, and other investigations.

A pattern associated with Alzheimer's adds weight to a clinical diagnosis but does not confirm it in isolation. A broadly normal scan does not rule out early disease if your neurologist's assessment suggests otherwise. The scan is a tool that informs clinical judgement — it is not a verdict, and there are no guarantees.

Why has my neurologist sent me to a cancer imaging centre?

PET technology is the same whether it is used to study a tumour or to measure brain function. The scanner does not know why you are there. Being referred to a PET centre associated with an oncology network does not mean cancer is suspected — this is not a cancer indication.

CION coordinates PET scans for neurological brain studies through partner imaging centres. The scan is reported and returned to your referring neurologist. Clinical responsibility for your diagnosis and care remains with your referring specialist throughout; CION's role is to arrange and perform the scan.

Did you know?

FDG-PET brain imaging can detect patterns of reduced metabolic activity in regions such as the temporal and parietal lobes before those changes appear on a standard MRI. Neurologists sometimes request it precisely because symptoms are present but structural imaging has been inconclusive.

Questions families often ask about brain PET scans

Will having this scan at CION mean I am now a cancer patient?

No. CION coordinates PET scanning for neurological indications as well as oncology. Having the scan arranged through a CION centre does not make you a cancer patient, does not create a cancer record, and does not mean anyone suspects cancer. Your referral is from your neurologist for a brain study, and your care remains entirely with them.

What is the difference between FDG-PET and amyloid PET of the brain?

FDG-PET measures how much glucose different brain areas are using — reduced activity in certain regions can suggest neurodegeneration. Amyloid PET detects amyloid protein deposits linked to Alzheimer's disease. Your neurologist has chosen one based on the specific question they need answered. If you are not sure which type your scan is, ask the referring clinic before you attend.

How long will the scan appointment take?

Your appointment letter will give you the full timeline, including when to arrive. Allow most of a morning or afternoon — preparation before the scan and the scan itself together take longer than people expect. The imaging team will explain each step when you arrive. You are not expected to do anything other than lie still during the scan.

Will my health insurance cover a brain PET scan?

Coverage for neurological PET scans varies between policies and often requires insurer pre-authorisation. Ask the CION team about indicative costs when you book, and contact your insurer with the specific investigation code written on your neurologist's referral. Costs for a neurological brain study are generally different from oncology scan costs.

Who explains the result — the scan centre or the neurologist?

The scan is reported by a nuclear medicine specialist and sent to your referring neurologist. Your neurologist then explains what the result means for your diagnosis and care. Frequently asked questions

Why is a brain PET scan being done instead of, or as well as, an MRI?

MRI shows the structure of the brain — its shape, size, and whether there are lesions. Brain PET shows how active different areas are, or whether amyloid is present. Many patients have both. Your neurologist has requested PET because the clinical question they are trying to answer is one that activity or amyloid imaging is best placed to address.

Can the scan tell us how advanced the memory loss is?

The scan shows a pattern at a single point in time. It can indicate which areas of the brain are less active than expected, which adds to your neurologist's clinical picture. It does not measure a stage of disease or predict future change. Only your neurologist, following you over time, can give you a sense of how things are progressing.

Is the radiotracer injection safe?

The tracer used in FDG-PET is a form of glucose tagged with a short-lived radioactive marker. The radiation dose is low and comparable to other common medical investigations. The tracer clears from your body naturally after the scan. Tell the team about any allergies and any possibility of pregnancy before you attend — they will manage the scan accordingly.

How quickly will my neurologist receive the result?

Results are typically available within a few working days of the scan. The nuclear medicine specialist writes a report and sends it to your neurologist. Ask the referring clinic when to expect a follow-up appointment to discuss it — some clinics schedule this in advance, others contact you once the result arrives.

Can the scan predict whether dementia will get worse?

The scan describes what is happening now, not what will happen. A result showing reduced activity in certain areas tells your neurologist something about the current state of the brain — it does not predict the rate of future change. Your neurologist will explain what the pattern means for your situation and what to watch for going forward.
