PET-CT Cost for GI Cancer — Staging in Hyderabad
PET-CT is one of the key tests used to stage gastrointestinal cancers, but cost, what insurance covers, and where the scan has real limitations are questions most patients have to find out for themselves. This page answers all three.

- Cost varies by centre and scan type — What you are quoted depends on where the scan is done, whether contrast CT is included, and whether a separate reading fee applies.
- Insurance usually covers it — Most private policies and state schemes include PET-CT for cancer staging, but pre-authorisation before the scan is not optional.
- PET has known blind spots in GI cancers — Mucinous and low-grade tumours often show little or no uptake — a limitation that changes how your staging is planned.
- It is one part of a wider workup — CT, MRI, endoscopy, biopsy and tumour markers are typically needed alongside PET-CT to complete staging.

PET-CT for GI cancer staging in Hyderabad varies in cost by centre, scan type and whether diagnostic contrast CT is included. CION coordinates scans through partner imaging centres. Most insurers and state schemes cover it with a treating oncologist's referral, but pre-authorisation before the scan is required.
CION offers PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
What does a PET-CT for GI cancer staging cost in Hyderabad?
The cost varies across imaging centres in Hyderabad and depends on whether you need a whole-body scan or a more targeted field, and whether diagnostic-quality contrast CT is included alongside the PET.
What a centre quotes you is typically the facility fee. It may not include the radiologist's reading fee or the nuclear medicine physician's report — ask specifically what is and is not in the figure you are given.
If you have private health insurance, check your policy for nuclear medicine or oncology imaging. Most policies that cover cancer treatment include PET-CT, but the insurer usually requires prior authorisation before the scan is done, not after.
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and some state government schemes in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh also cover PET-CT for cancer staging at empanelled centres. Your oncologist's team can confirm which scheme applies to you and what documents are needed.
What else is in a GI cancer staging workup?
- Contrast CT of chest, abdomen and pelvisThe backbone of most GI cancer staging; usually done before or alongside PET.
- Colonoscopy or endoscopyTo directly visualise and biopsy the primary tumour if not already done.
- MRI of the liverOrdered when liver involvement is suspected or confirmed on CT or PET.
- MRI of the pelvisStandard for rectal cancer to determine whether surgery or pre-operative treatment comes first.
- Tumour markers — CEA, CA 19-9Baseline values used to track how the cancer responds to treatment over time.
- Biopsy and histopathologyRequired before any treatment starts; also establishes whether your tumour is mucinous, which affects how PET results are interpreted.
- Multidisciplinary team reviewWhere the oncologist, radiologist and surgeon agree on the final staging and treatment plan.

Are there GI cancers where PET-CT does not work well?
PET-CT works by detecting areas of high glucose uptake. Not all GI tumours take up glucose in the same way, and some types produce unreliable or absent results on a PET scan.
Mucinous colorectal cancers and mucinous appendiceal tumours often show little or no uptake on PET, even when the disease is widespread. If your tumour is mucinous, your oncologist will rely more on CT and MRI than on the PET result for staging decisions.
Low-grade neuroendocrine tumours of the GI tract also show limited glucose uptake. A different type of PET scan — Ga-68 DOTATATE or similar — is more appropriate for those, and your team will discuss that if it applies to you.
Peritoneal disease, where cancer has spread to the lining of the abdomen, is frequently underestimated on PET-CT regardless of tumour type. If peritoneal involvement is a concern in your case, your staging workup should address this with additional imaging beyond the PET.
How does staging work at CION?
Oncologist consultation
Your oncologist reviews your symptoms, prior scans and pathology to decide which imaging is needed and in what order.
Referral and insurance pre-authorisation
CION coordinates a referral to a partner imaging centre. If you are using insurance or a government scheme, pre-authorisation is applied for at this stage — allow a few working days.
Preparation for the scan
The imaging centre will give you specific instructions, which usually include fasting and avoiding strenuous activity before arrival.
The scan at the partner imaging centre
A radioactive tracer is injected and you wait for it to circulate before the scan begins. The scan itself is completed in a short time once you are positioned.
Report and MDT review at CION
The report is reviewed by your oncologist, usually at a multidisciplinary team meeting, before your results appointment.
Book a PET-CT at CION from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — with an oncologist-reviewed report and a free Rs 950 consultation, across 4 partner centres. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is PET-CT covered by health insurance for GI cancer?
Most private insurers in India cover PET-CT for cancer staging when a treating oncologist recommends it and prior authorisation has been obtained. The insurer's pre-approval process usually requires the referral letter, the histopathology report confirming cancer, and sometimes a clinical summary. Without pre-approval, even a valid claim can be rejected on procedural grounds, so start the process before the scan is booked.
Does Ayushman Bharat cover PET-CT for cancer staging?
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY includes PET-CT for oncology staging for eligible beneficiaries at empanelled centres. The list of empanelled centres and the benefit package change periodically, so your treating hospital's billing team is the most reliable source for current coverage. State government extension schemes in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may add coverage beyond the central scheme — the CION team can confirm which applies to your situation.
Can I book a PET-CT without an oncologist's referral?
You can book a PET-CT privately at most imaging centres without a referral, but your insurer will almost certainly decline the claim without one. More importantly, a PET result interpreted without your full clinical picture — your tumour type, stage and prior treatment — can produce false reassurance or unnecessary alarm. The value of PET-CT for cancer staging comes from the oncologist reading it alongside everything else known about your case.
My colorectal cancer is mucinous — will PET-CT give accurate results?
Mucinous colorectal cancers frequently show low or absent uptake on PET-CT, meaning the scan may significantly underestimate the extent of disease. This is a known biological property of mucinous tumours, not a limitation of the equipment or the radiologist. Your oncologist should account for this before the scan is ordered and may rely more on MRI and diagnostic CT for staging. Ask specifically how your tumour type affects what the PET result will and will not show for your case.
Does CION have its own PET-CT scanner?
CION does not own PET-CT scanners. Scans are coordinated through partner imaging centres in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh. The report is then reviewed by your oncologist at CION, usually at a multidisciplinary team meeting. This is standard practice across most oncology networks — the nuclear medicine facility and the treating centre are typically separate, and the coordination between them is part of your care.
How long does the full staging process take?
From your first oncology consultation to a completed staging decision, the process typically takes one to two weeks. The steps that take most of the time are insurance pre-authorisation, the scan slot at the imaging centre, and the MDT review that follows. If a biopsy result is still pending, that adds to the timeline. Your oncologist's team can give you a realistic estimate once they know which scans and reports are still outstanding.
