What does a PET-CT use — and is it different from MRI?
- PET-CT
- A scanner that combines CT (low-dose X-rays showing body structure) with PET (a scan tracking a radiotracer to show where cells are unusually active). It does not use a magnetic field.
- Radiotracer (FDG)
- A mildly radioactive glucose solution injected into a vein before the scan. Active cells absorb more of it, making them detectable. It clears from your body within a few hours.
- Silicone or saline implant
- An implant filled with silicone gel or sterile saltwater. Neither material absorbs the radiotracer or reacts to X-rays. Both appear as distinct, identifiable areas on the CT images.
- Imaging artifact
- A shadow or minor distortion near a dense object — such as an implant — in the CT images. Radiologists expect this from implants and note it in the report rather than misreading it.
Is a PET-CT scan safe with breast implants?
Yes. PET-CT uses low-dose X-rays and a radiotracer injected into a vein. Neither creates heat, pressure, or a magnetic field. None of those things can rupture, shift, or damage an implant.
MRI is the scan patients most often ask about in relation to implants, because older guidance included restrictions on certain implant types. PET-CT has no equivalent concern.
Tell the booking team and the radiographer on the day that you have implants. This is routine information — not a sign of any risk, but it helps the radiologist read your images with the right context.

Do breast implants affect what the scan can see?
Implants do not absorb the radiotracer, so they show as inactive areas on the PET images. A radiologist reading the scan expects this and is not confused by it.
On the CT portion, implants can create a small shadow or distortion near the chest wall — called an artifact. This is usually minor. An experienced radiologist notes it in the report and interprets the surrounding tissue accordingly.
PET-CT is used mainly to stage locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer — to look for spread before a major treatment decision, or to check how treatment is working. It is not the standard tool for early-stage breast cancer and is not a substitute for mammography or biopsy. If your oncologist has ordered it, they have a specific clinical reason.

Will the radiotracer injection affect my breast implants?
No. The radiotracer is injected into a vein in your arm and travels through the bloodstream. Implants are inert — they do not absorb the radiotracer and are not changed by it. The radiotracer clears from your body within a few hours and has no lasting effect on any tissue, including implant material.
Do I need to tell the team about my implants before I arrive?
Yes, and it is straightforward. Mention it when you book the appointment, not just when you arrive. Knowing in advance lets the radiologist approach the images with the right context from the start. You do not need a letter from your surgeon. Bring your implant card if you have one — the type and fill material are useful, but the scan will not be delayed if you do not have it.
Can a PET-CT scan rupture or damage a breast implant?
No. Rupture is associated with physical pressure or strong magnetic fields. PET-CT applies neither. The scan uses low-dose X-rays that pass through tissue without exerting force, and a radiotracer injection that does not interact with implant material. Current radiological guidance does not identify any risk of implant damage from PET-CT.
Will my implants hide cancer in or around the breast?
This is a reasonable concern. Implants do not emit or absorb the radiotracer, so they show as inactive areas — the cancer signal comes from surrounding tissue, not from inside the implant. The area directly beneath the implant, near the chest wall, can occasionally have reduced image clarity due to artifact. Your radiologist will note this in the report. If there is any clinical concern about an area that is difficult to assess, your oncologist may arrange a complementary scan such as MRI.
Is PET-CT the right scan for breast cancer if I have implants?
Whether PET-CT is appropriate depends on your diagnosis and stage, not on whether you have implants. PET-CT is not indicated for early breast cancer — it is mainly used to stage locally advanced or metastatic disease, to assess spread before a major treatment decision, or to check response to treatment. If you have early-stage breast cancer, PET-CT is generally not the appropriate scan regardless of implant status. Your oncologist will explain which imaging is right for your situation.
What if I had implant surgery recently — do I need to wait before a PET-CT?
Tell your oncologist and the scan team about any recent surgery near the implants. Recent procedures cause localised inflammation that shows up as increased activity on PET and can be difficult to interpret without that context. There is no fixed waiting period — your team will factor in the timing when reading the images. Recent surgery is not a reason to delay a medically necessary scan; it is information the radiologist needs.
