"My oncologist will handle everything." — actually, no oncologist can.

Subspecialty Explained

"Breast oncologist" isn't one job. It's three.

Breast cancer needs three different oncologists working together — medical, surgical, and radiation. Each has different training, different decisions to make, and different fellowship qualifications. Hospitals that give you only one are shortchanging you. Here's the honest breakdown.

💊

Medical Oncologist

Decides drug therapy

  • Trains in: DM Medical Oncology (3 years post-MD)
  • Decides: Chemotherapy regimen, hormone therapy, targeted agents (Trastuzumab), immunotherapy
  • Sees you: Throughout treatment — most appointments will be with this doctor
  • Often the panel chair — coordinates the overall plan
7 medical oncologists at CION. All DM-qualified. Multiple breast cancer subspecialty.
🔪

Surgical Oncologist

Performs cancer surgery

  • Trains in: MCh Surgical Oncology (3 years post-MS) or fellowship
  • Decides: Lumpectomy vs mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy vs full axillary clearance, oncoplastic techniques
  • Sees you: Pre-op, surgery day, post-op follow-ups
  • Volume matters most here — published evidence shows higher-volume surgeons have better margins and lower complications
5 surgical oncologists at CION. 800+ breast surgeries annually. AIIMS / Tata Memorial trained.

Radiation Oncologist

Designs and delivers radiotherapy

  • Trains in: MD Radiation Oncology (3 years)
  • Decides: Whether radiation is needed, target volume, dose, fractionation, technique (IMRT/IGRT/SBRT/DIBH)
  • Sees you: Planning visit, weekly during 3–6 weeks of treatment, follow-ups
  • Critical for left-sided cancer — DIBH technique reduces cardiac dose by 50–80%
4 radiation oncologists at CION. 1,200+ breast radiation plans designed. DIBH standard.

Plus the support specialists you may also need

Plastic Surgeon For reconstruction — implant or flap-based (DIEP/TRAM/latissimus)
Pathologist Reviews biopsy and surgical specimens — breast subspecialty matters
Radiologist Reads mammography, MRI, PET — breast imaging fellowship preferred
Genetic Counsellor For BRCA testing decisions — strong family history or young age
Breast Care Nurse Continuity through journey — between appointments, post-op, side-effect management
Onco-fertility Specialist For pre-chemo fertility preservation — egg or embryo freezing

The CION model: All three oncologists meet you in your first visit. Tumour board reviews your case before recommending a plan. You don't shuttle between hospitals. You don't get conflicting opinions. One panel, one plan, one place.

"I'd be more comfortable with a woman doctor." — completely fair.

Women Specialists at CION

Senior female breast cancer specialists. Available on request.

Many patients prefer a woman doctor for breast cancer — for examinations, for long-term care, or simply to feel more at ease. We have senior female medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists on our breast cancer panel. Ask for one when you book — we'll match you.

Medical Oncology

How to request a female specialist: When you book your free consultation, write "female specialist preferred" in the message field — or call our helpline directly and tell our patient coordinator. We'll match you to whichever female oncologist on our panel best fits your case (medical / surgical / radiation).

"My oncologist will look after me." — and 6 other people will too.

Beyond Your Doctor

Your CION team — the people behind the consultant.

Hospitals advertise their doctors. We'll do that too — but we'll also tell you about the people you'll spend the most time with. Breast care nurses, coordinators, counsellors, dieticians. Often these relationships matter as much as the doctor's name on the door.

Breast Care Nurse

Your continuity through everything.

A specialist nurse trained in breast cancer care. Often the first person you call when something feels off. Knows your case better than the consultant on a busy day. Available between appointments — phone, WhatsApp, in person.

  • Pre-treatment education — what to expect
  • Side-effect management calls during chemo
  • Wound care after surgery
  • Drain management and removal
  • Lymphedema awareness and prevention
Patient Coordinator

The person who keeps your schedule together.

Books your scans, chases your reports, coordinates between branches, handles insurance pre-authorisation, schedules follow-ups. Your one number for "what happens next." Most CION patients say they couldn't have managed without one.

  • Appointment scheduling across specialties
  • Insurance/ArogyaSri paperwork end-to-end
  • Multi-branch coordination
  • Records management
  • Direct phone line — no helpline maze
Oncology Pharmacist

Reviews every chemo dose for safety.

Specialist pharmacists in laminar-flow chemo compounding rooms. Every infusion is checked twice for dose accuracy, drug interactions, and your latest blood parameters. Catches errors that overworked junior doctors might miss.

  • Dose verification against latest blood reports
  • Drug interaction screening with your other medications
  • Aseptic compounding (laminar-flow hood)
  • Pre-medication kit preparation
  • Clinical pharmacology consult on request
Onco-Counsellor

Mental health support, no stigma.

Trained counsellors specifically experienced in cancer patient psychology. Available to you and your family. Not a luxury — depression and anxiety are real, common, and treatable. We refer you proactively.

  • Initial consultation included in your CION journey
  • Body image counselling for mastectomy patients
  • Family / partner support sessions
  • Telugu, Hindi, and English consultations
  • Onward referrals to psychiatrists when indicated
Onco-Dietician

Practical food guidance — not generic.

Cancer treatment changes appetite, taste, and tolerance unpredictably. A dietician familiar with chemotherapy effects gives South-Indian-specific food advice — what to eat when nauseated, what to avoid, weight maintenance.

  • Chemo-cycle-aware meal planning
  • Recipes adapted for taste changes
  • Diabetes / hypertension co-management
  • Post-surgery protein optimisation
  • Long-term diet for hormone-therapy patients
Physiotherapist

Recovery isn't just resting.

Post-mastectomy shoulder mobility, lymphedema therapy, post-radiation rehabilitation, exercise during chemo. On-site at flagship branches — not a "we'll refer you somewhere" arrangement.

  • Pre-surgery shoulder assessment and education
  • Shoulder mobilisation 2 weeks post-mastectomy
  • Lymphedema decongestive therapy when needed
  • Cardio-protective exercise during chemotherapy
  • Survivorship exercise programmes

Your CION journey isn't a series of doctor visits. It's a coordinated, supported path.

"Volume matters." — every published study on surgical oncology outcomes.

Empowerment Guide

How to choose a breast cancer specialist — at any hospital.

We'd rather you make the right choice — even if that's not us — than a hurried one. Here's what good oncology care looks like, what to ask at any hospital, and what should make you pause. Use this when comparing CION to anyone else.

What good care looks like

  • Your oncologist names a specific protocol (NCCN, ESMO, ASCO) and tells you which one applies to your case.
  • You meet a multidisciplinary team (medical + surgical + radiation oncologist) — not just one doctor making all decisions.
  • Your treatment plan comes in writing, with cost breakdown and expected outcomes, before treatment starts.
  • Your doctor tells you "here are your options", not just "here's what we'll do".
  • Side effects are actively discussed — including ones you didn't know to ask about.
  • A second opinion is welcomed, even encouraged. They'll send your records.
  • You can reach your team between appointments — a phone number, a coordinator, a portal.
  • Follow-up plan is clear: what tests, when, with whom, for how many years.

Things that should make you pause

  • Pressure to start immediately without time to think (cancer treatment can almost always wait 1–2 weeks for a second opinion).
  • Verbal-only cost estimates that "depend" on a lot of variables.
  • A doctor who discourages or makes friction for second opinions.
  • "We do it differently" without explaining what protocol or evidence supports the approach.
  • No tumour board review for a complex case — single-doctor decisions on aggressive disease.
  • Promises that are too definitive ("100% cure", "no side effects") — honest oncologists give probabilities, not guarantees.
  • Significant up-front payment demands before tests, plans, or paperwork.
  • You're being seen by a different junior every visit, not the consultant you booked.

📋 Questions to ask any oncologist (free to print)

Bring this to your CION consultation — or your next appointment elsewhere. We'll answer all of them.

  1. What is the exact stage and subtype of my breast cancer? (HR-positive, HER2-positive, triple-negative)
  2. What protocol are you recommending and why this one? (NCCN page if applicable)
  3. Has my case been reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumour board?
  4. What are my treatment options — including the ones you don't recommend?
  5. What's the expected outcome — recurrence-free survival at 5 years, with this plan vs without?
  6. What side effects are most likely, and how do you manage them?
  7. Will you give me a written cost estimate before treatment starts?
  8. Will I see you (the consultant) at every visit, or other doctors?
  9. How do I reach you between appointments if I have a problem?
  10. What's my follow-up plan after treatment finishes — for the next 5 years?
  11. Should I get a second opinion? Where would you suggest?
  12. Are there clinical trials I might be eligible for?
  13. Do I need genomic testing (Oncotype DX) to confirm the plan?

"Will I see the same doctor every time?" — yes, and here's how we promise it.

Continuity Promise

From your first visit to five years after.

One of the most common patient complaints in Indian healthcare: "I never see the same doctor twice." Cancer treatment cannot work that way. At CION, your panel is fixed for your full journey — and we tell you in advance whenever continuity is broken (and why).

1

Your panel is fixed at first consultation

At your first visit, you meet your medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, and radiation oncologist. This panel stays with you for the entirety of treatment. Not a roster of doctors who happen to be on duty — your specific three.

2

You meet the consultant at every visit, not a junior

When you book an appointment with Dr. X, you see Dr. X. Junior fellows may sit in for training, but the conversation, decisions, and signed plan come from your consultant. No "the doctor you booked is busy, see this one instead" surprises.

3

The same breast care nurse and coordinator

Allocated at consultation, follows you through. The breast care nurse knows your medications, your last side effect, your family situation. The coordinator knows your insurance, your scan history, your follow-up dates. Continuity at the support level, not just consultant level.

4

If your doctor is unavailable — explicit handoff protocol

Conferences, holidays, illness happen. When they do, your case is handed off to a named covering consultant — and you're told in advance, not at reception. The covering consultant has reviewed your file before seeing you. "Last-minute substitution without warning" is treated as a process failure on our end.

5

Five-year follow-up, same panel

Treatment is 6–12 months. Follow-up is 5+ years. Your panel sees you through that entire window — not handed off to a "follow-up clinic" with rotating doctors. Recurrence detection is partly pattern recognition; the doctor who treated you is the one most likely to spot something subtle.

Where continuity has limits — honest version

  • Doctors retire or change roles. When this happens, we proactively transition you to a colleague — not at your appointment.
  • Some specialists are visiting. A few sub-subspecialty consultants come weekly or monthly. We schedule your appointments to align.
  • Emergencies don't follow schedules. If you need urgent care at 11pm, you may see whoever is on call. Your panel reviews their notes the next day and continues.
  • You can request a change. If you're not feeling the connection with your panel oncologist, just ask. We'll switch you internally. No drama, no questions, no fee.
3 Things You Won't Find at Most Cancer Hospitals

The reason breast cancer patients drive past 4 hospitals to reach us

Most hospitals do breast cancer treatment. CION does breast cancer care — and the difference shows up in three ways most patients only notice when something goes wrong elsewhere.

01

Three doctors, one decision.

A medical, surgical, and radiation oncologist sit together and review your breast cancer case before treatment is recommended. Not one doctor's opinion — a panel's consensus.

17+ specialists on every
tumour board
03

Written estimate. Before treatment.

Every patient gets a written treatment plan with cost breakdown before anything starts. No surprise bills. No verbal-only quotes that change. We're upfront because we have to be.

Our Promise to You

We know what you're worried about.
Here's what we'll never do.

Cancer treatment is the most consequential decision most families ever make. These aren't features — they're commitments.

We will never pressure you to start treatment with us.

The free consultation is genuinely free, with no obligation. If our doctors don't think CION is the right fit for your case, we'll tell you that — and refer you elsewhere if needed.

We will never quote a price verbally and bill differently.

Every patient gets a written treatment plan with cost breakdown, line by line, before treatment starts. What you read is what you pay. Insurance gaps are spelled out — not glossed over.

We will never rush a diagnosis or treatment decision.

Every complex case goes through our multidisciplinary tumour board — even if it adds a day. Same-day consultations are available, but big decisions get the time they deserve.

We will never discourage a second opinion.

We actively recommend you get one — at CION or elsewhere. Confident doctors don't fear being questioned. Bring our plan to any other oncologist in India. If they suggest something better, take it.

We will never turn you away because of insurance.

ArogyaSri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS, and all major private insurers are accepted. Cashless wherever possible. Our admissions team handles the paperwork end-to-end so you can focus on getting better.

We will never hide the truth to keep you hopeful.

Our doctors give you the prognosis honestly — including when the news is hard. False reassurance helps no one. You'll get the full picture, in plain language, and a clear plan for what comes next.

"What if I don't click with my doctor?" — switch. We expect it sometimes.

Honest Permission

If your oncologist isn't the right fit for you — switch.

Cancer treatment is a 6-month-to-5-year relationship. Personality fit matters. We'd rather you switch internally than carry resentment, miss appointments, or quietly leave for another hospital. Here's how it works at CION.

🔄

Switch consultant within CION

Tell your patient coordinator you'd like a different oncologist. We'll match you to another consultant on the same specialty. Free, no questions, no awkward conversation with your previous doctor — we handle the transition. Your records and treatment plan transfer with you.

No fee · Records transferred · Plan continues
👩‍⚕

Request a female consultant

Many women feel more at ease with a woman doctor for breast cancer examinations. Always available on request. If you didn't ask initially and want to switch now, just ask the coordinator.

Available · Just ask when booking
🌐

Request a different language

Our panel speaks English, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, and Marathi between them. You should never feel reluctant to ask questions because of language. Patient coordinator can re-match you.

8 languages across panel · Re-match free
🏥

Get a second opinion outside CION

We'll prepare a complete records package — biopsy slides, IHC reports, scans, proposed treatment plan — and send them to any oncologist you choose. We've done this 200+ times in the last year. If they suggest something better, take it.

No fee for records package · Same-day preparation

What "internal switch" actually looks like at CION

  1. You tell us — call patient coordinator, message on WhatsApp, or mention at next visit. We don't ask why; you don't need to justify.
  2. We re-match you — usually within 24 hours, to another panel oncologist on the same subspecialty (medical/surgical/radiation).
  3. Records and case discussion transfer — your file, our internal notes, the tumour board recommendation. New oncologist reads everything before meeting you.
  4. First visit with the new consultant — typically within 1 week. They confirm the existing plan or recommend a tweak. Continuity, just with a different person.
  5. Your previous oncologist isn't told it was personal — internally we say "patient requested re-match." We protect both relationships.

Why we make this easy: An oncologist whose patients quietly leave for another hospital learns nothing. An oncologist who knows their patients can request a switch becomes a better doctor over time. The hospitals that get it right have learned: permission to leave is what makes patients stay.

82%

of cancer patients in India accept the first treatment plan they're given — without ever getting a second opinion. Don't be the 82%.

Most people hesitate to book because they don't know what they're walking into. Here's exactly what happens — minute by minute. No surprises, no pressure.

0–5 min

Reception & paperwork

You're greeted by our patient coordinator. Quick form for basic details. Coffee or water if you want it. Wait time is rarely more than 10 minutes.

5–15 min

Listening session — your story, in your words

The oncologist sits with you, no rush. You explain what's going on, what's worrying you, what you've already been told. This part matters most. We listen before we look.

15–25 min

Report review & explanation

Bring whatever you have — biopsy, scans, blood reports, prescriptions. The oncologist reviews each one in front of you and explains what each means in plain language. No medical jargon dump.

25–35 min

Treatment options + cost transparency

Here's where you get clarity: what are the treatment paths, what does each cost, what does insurance cover, what are the trade-offs. Written estimate, line by line. For complex cases, your file goes to the tumour board next.

35–45 min

Your questions. Every single one.

Ask anything. About second opinions, about whether to wait, about whether another hospital might be better for your case. We answer honestly — even when the answer isn't "come to CION."

After

You leave with: the plan in writing.

Take it home. Discuss it with your family. Compare it with other hospitals. You're not committed to anything. If you choose CION, we move next steps in 24 hrs. If not — that's fine. The consultation is yours to keep.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to what most of our patients ask before booking.

Can I request a female breast cancer specialist at CION?
Yes. We have senior female medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists on our breast cancer panel. When you book your free consultation, write 'female specialist preferred' in the message field or tell our patient coordinator on the phone. We'll match you to the most suitable female oncologist by subtype and availability.
Will I see the same oncologist at every visit, or different doctors each time?
You see the same consultant oncologist throughout your treatment journey at CION — including your follow-ups for years afterward. If your primary oncologist is unavailable on a particular day, you'll be informed in advance and offered a rescheduled slot or a covering consultant of equivalent seniority — never a junior fellow.
How many breast cancer cases has my doctor personally treated?
Case volumes vary by subspecialty. Our senior surgical oncologists have performed 800+ breast cancer surgeries. Our medical oncology team delivers 2,500+ chemotherapy cycles per year. Radiation oncologists have planned 1,200+ radiation treatments. Specific case-volume figures for any individual consultant are available on request.
Where did your breast cancer specialists train?
Across our panel, training pedigree includes AIIMS New Delhi, Tata Memorial Mumbai, NIMS Hyderabad, SVIMS Tirupati, Kasturba Manipal, Osmania Medical College, plus international fellowships including MRCP UK and ECMO European Medical Oncology certification.
Which languages do CION breast cancer doctors speak?
Across our breast cancer panel: English, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, and Marathi. You can request a doctor in your preferred language at booking — particularly important for elderly patients and patients from Andhra Pradesh districts.
What if I don't connect with my doctor — can I switch to another oncologist?
Yes, without question. The doctor-patient relationship in oncology lasts years — fit matters. Tell our patient coordinator and we'll arrange a switch within the panel without any awkward conversation. Continuity of records is automatic.
Can I message my oncologist between appointments?
Yes. Each consultant has a coordinator who handles non-emergency questions and routes them appropriately. For urgent concerns (fever, severe nausea, chest pain), our 24/7 helpline puts you in touch with an on-call oncologist directly. You won't be told to 'wait until your next appointment'.
Is the breast cancer specialist I see a senior consultant or a fellow?
All our breast cancer treatment is led by senior consultants. Fellows and trainees may observe but do not lead patient care or make treatment decisions independently. The panel that signs your treatment plan consists of consultant-grade medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists.
How long does the first consultation with a breast cancer specialist take?
Free first consultations are 30 minutes — long enough for a careful history, physical exam, review of any reports you've brought, and a discussion of next steps. Follow-up consultations are typically 15–20 minutes; specific reviews (genetic counselling, fertility consultations) are scheduled longer.
How does CION match me to the right oncologist for my breast cancer?
We consider tumour subtype (HR-positive, HER2-positive, triple-negative — different oncologists have different specialty interests), stage, treatment history, language, gender preference, and which branch is closest to you. Our patient coordinator does the match — we don't run a 'pick from a list' model that often leads to mis-fits.
