Why does F-18 NaF PET detect more than a conventional bone scan?
Both tracers travel to areas of active bone turnover, but F-18 NaF is taken up more avidly by bone and clears from surrounding soft tissue faster. This leaves a cleaner, higher-contrast signal. PET cameras also capture images at higher spatial resolution than the SPECT cameras used in conventional bone scans, so smaller areas of bone involvement become visible.
