PSMA PET-CT is a specialist nuclear medicine investigation ordered on clinical indication — the indication determines what the radiologist is looking for and how the report is written. If you have not yet seen an oncologist, that is the first step. Self-referral does not produce a useful report, and the investigation is not appropriate without a clear clinical question guiding it.
How long does the PSMA PET scan appointment take?
Allow two to three hours at the imaging centre. This includes the tracer injection, an uptake period while the tracer distributes through the body, and the scan itself. The time on the scanner is shorter — typically 20 to 30 minutes — but the uptake period means you cannot plan a shorter visit. You will receive specific timing when your booking is confirmed.
When will my oncologist receive the PSMA PET report?
Reports are typically available within 24 to 48 hours of the scan and go directly to your referring oncologist. The established clinical indications, and those covered by NCCN and ESMO guidance, are prostate cancer staging and restaging. Research into its use in other cancers is ongoing, but it is not the standard application. If your oncologist has ordered it for a different reason, they will explain the specific indication.
Can PSMA PET-CT detect cancer if my PSA is low?
This is one of the situations where PSMA PET has a meaningful advantage over older imaging. NCCN and ESMO guidance notes that PSMA PET can detect recurrent prostate cancer at PSA levels where conventional CT and bone scan often show nothing. Whether it is appropriate for your specific PSA level and situation is a clinical decision for your oncologist. We do not yet have long-term data confirming that detection at very low PSA levels changes survival, but detection rates are well established.
