PSMA PET in Hyderabad: — Availability and How to Book

PSMA PET-CT is available in Hyderabad, but tracer supply is produced in limited batches, which means your slot is confirmed at booking rather than assumed. Here is what the process looks like and what to expect on timing.

  • Available through partner centres — CION coordinates PSMA PET-CT with partner imaging centres in Hyderabad — not scanners owned or run by CION.
  • Tracer supply limits daily slots — The PSMA tracer has a short shelf life and is produced in batches, so not every date has availability.
  • Confirmed at booking — Your scan date and centre are confirmed when the booking is made, not at the point of referral.
  • Indicative cost ₹23,999 — This is an indicative 2025 figure — confirm the current amount at the time of booking.

PSMA PET-CT is available in Hyderabad through CION partner imaging centres. Tracer supply is produced in limited batches, so your scan date is confirmed at booking rather than assumed weeks ahead. Most patients are scheduled within a few days of their oncologist's referral and booking confirmation.

CION offers PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

How do I book a PSMA PET scan in Hyderabad?

  1. Your oncologist raises the referral

PSMA PET-CT is ordered by your treating oncologist. The referral specifies the clinical indication — usually staging, restaging, or biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer — which determines what the radiologist is looking for.

  2. CION checks tracer availability

The booking team contacts the partner imaging centre to check whether tracer is available for your preferred dates. This step is what determines when your scan can happen, not scanner availability alone.

  3. Date and centre confirmed to you

Once a slot with tracer supply is secured, you receive the specific date, time, and centre address. Preparation instructions are given at this point — follow those rather than general guidance online, as protocols differ by centre.

  4. You attend for the scan

Bring your referral letter and any prior imaging. The tracer is injected at the centre; you then wait through an uptake period before the scan itself. The full appointment takes around two to three hours.

  5. Report goes to your oncologist

The report is sent directly to your referring oncologist, typically within 24 to 48 hours. Schedule your follow-up appointment for after the report has been received and reviewed.

Is tracer supply a real constraint on getting PSMA PET in Hyderabad?

Yes, and it is worth understanding why. PSMA tracers — most commonly Gallium-68 PSMA or F-18 PSMA — are produced at specialist radiopharmacy facilities and have short half-lives. A batch made in the morning cannot be held for the following week.

This means availability depends on production schedules, not only on scanner time. A centre may have a free scanner on a given day but no tracer allocated for that session.

Availability and tracer supply are confirmed when you book. The honest answer to 'can I get it this week?' is: the team will confirm that at the time of booking, not before.

How quickly do most patients get their PSMA PET scan?

For most patients in Hyderabad, the scan is scheduled within a few days of the referral being placed and the booking confirmed. It is not typically a weeks-long wait.

If your oncologist has indicated clinical urgency, say so when booking. That context helps the team prioritise tracer slots accordingly.

If no slot is available for your preferred dates, you can ask to be placed on a cancellation list. Tracer batches are scheduled in advance, so waiting a few days is usually enough.

Common questions about PSMA PET in Hyderabad

Which imaging centres in Hyderabad offer PSMA PET-CT?

CION coordinates PSMA PET-CT with partner imaging centres and does not run the scanners directly. The specific centre is confirmed at the time of booking based on which location has tracer available for your date. If you have a preference for a particular part of the city, mention it when booking — the team will try to accommodate it, subject to where tracer is available that session.

How much does PSMA PET-CT cost in Hyderabad?

The indicative cost through CION partner centres is ₹23,999 as of 2025. This is an indicative figure — confirm the current amount at booking, as costs at nuclear medicine facilities can change with tracer pricing and facility charges. PSMA PET-CT is approximately double the cost of a standard FDG PET-CT, which reflects the specialist production process for the PSMA tracer.

What preparation is needed before a PSMA PET scan?

Preparation instructions are given when your booking is confirmed, because they vary depending on the specific tracer used and the imaging centre's protocol. In general, PSMA PET preparation is less restrictive than FDG PET — blood sugar control is not the primary concern. You will usually be asked to fast for a few hours and to hydrate well before arrival. Follow the instructions given to you at booking rather than general guidance you find elsewhere.

What is PSMA PET-CT and why is it different from a standard PET scan?

A standard PET scan uses an FDG tracer that targets glucose uptake — useful across many cancers, but limited in prostate cancer, especially at low PSA levels. PSMA PET-CT uses a tracer that targets prostate-specific membrane antigen, a protein expressed at high levels on prostate cancer cells. This makes it significantly more sensitive for detecting prostate cancer spread in situations where a standard PET or bone scan shows nothing. NCCN and ESMO both include PSMA PET in their prostate cancer imaging guidance.

Will my insurance cover PSMA PET-CT?

Coverage varies by policy and insurer. PSMA PET-CT is a newer investigation, and some policies that cover PET-CT broadly may not cover PSMA-specific tracers — the billing code and categorisation matter. Ask your insurer before booking whether PSMA PET-CT is covered under your policy and whether a pre-authorisation is required. The CION team can provide documentation to support a pre-authorisation request if your insurer needs it.

Does the scan involve radiation?

Yes. PSMA PET-CT involves two sources: the radioactive tracer that is injected, and the CT component of the scan. The combined dose is similar to other nuclear medicine investigations. Your nuclear medicine team can give you the dose specific to your scan. After the scan, you will be advised to keep distance from young children and pregnant women for a few hours while the tracer clears from your body.

PET-CT at CION starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — across 4 partner centres in Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Himayatnagar and Narayanaguda. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I book PSMA PET-CT without an oncologist's referral?

Booking through CION requires a referral from your treating oncologist. PSMA PET-CT is a specialist nuclear medicine investigation ordered on clinical indication — the indication determines what the radiologist is looking for and how the report is written. If you have not yet seen an oncologist, that is the first step. Self-referral does not produce a useful report, and the investigation is not appropriate without a clear clinical question guiding it.

How long does the PSMA PET scan appointment take?

Allow two to three hours at the imaging centre. This includes the tracer injection, an uptake period while the tracer distributes through the body, and the scan itself. The time on the scanner is shorter — typically 20 to 30 minutes — but the uptake period means you cannot plan a shorter visit. You will receive specific timing when your booking is confirmed.

When will my oncologist receive the PSMA PET report?

Reports are typically available within 24 to 48 hours of the scan and go directly to your referring oncologist. Plan your follow-up appointment for after the report has been received — arriving at clinic the day after the scan is usually too soon for a meaningful discussion. Ask your oncologist's team when they expect to have reviewed the report before you fix that appointment.

What if no tracer slot is available for my preferred dates?

The booking team will offer the next available slot. Because tracer batches are scheduled in advance, a short wait of a few days is usually enough. If your oncologist has flagged clinical urgency, make sure that is communicated at booking — it helps the team prioritise. You can also ask to be placed on a cancellation list if an earlier slot opens.

Is PSMA PET-CT only for prostate cancer?

PSMA PET-CT is used primarily for prostate cancer. PSMA — prostate-specific membrane antigen — is expressed at high levels on prostate cancer cells, which is what the tracer targets. The established clinical indications, and those covered by NCCN and ESMO guidance, are prostate cancer staging and restaging. Research into its use in other cancers is ongoing, but it is not the standard application. If your oncologist has ordered it for a different reason, they will explain the specific indication.

Can PSMA PET-CT detect cancer if my PSA is low?

This is one of the situations where PSMA PET has a meaningful advantage over older imaging. NCCN and ESMO guidance notes that PSMA PET can detect recurrent prostate cancer at PSA levels where conventional CT and bone scan often show nothing. Whether it is appropriate for your specific PSA level and situation is a clinical decision for your oncologist. We do not yet have long-term data confirming that detection at very low PSA levels changes survival, but detection rates are well established.
