A PET scan appointment is not like a blood test or a CT. Your slot is fixed because a radioactive substance with a short life is made specifically for you on that morning — and once it starts to decay, it cannot wait.

- Made the same day — Your tracer is produced and dispatched to the imaging centre on the morning of your scan, not kept in stock.
- Decays within hours — Radioactive tracers lose their activity over time. The scan must happen while enough activity remains to produce a useful image.

PET scans use short-lived radioactive tracers that begin to decay the moment they are made. Why is PET booking different from CT or MRI?

What do these terms mean?
- Half-life
- The time it takes for half of a tracer's radioactivity to disappear. After two or three half-lives, too little activity remains for a reliable scan.
- Tracer
- A small radioactive substance injected before a PET scan. It travels to metabolically active areas — such as tumour tissue — and emits signals the scanner detects.
- Cyclotron
- The machine that produces short-lived PET tracers, located at a specialist facility. Your tracer is transported to the imaging centre the same morning it is made.
- Decay window
- The period when a tracer has enough remaining activity to produce a usable image. Your appointment is set to fall inside this window.
- FDG
- Fluorodeoxyglucose — the most widely used PET tracer, targeting glucose metabolism. Available at more centres than newer specialised tracers.
- FAPI and F-DOPA
- Newer tracers targeting different cellular processes. Their use is established for certain cancer types and emerging for others. Their shorter active periods make the scheduling window tighter than FDG.

What happens if you miss your scan slot?
If you arrive significantly late or cannot attend, the tracer cannot be saved for later. It continues to decay regardless of whether you are present.
For standard FDG scans, some flexibility may exist depending on how long the tracer has been in transit. For FAPI and F-DOPA, the window is narrower. A missed slot almost always means a new booking and a longer wait.
Call your care team as early as possible if something changes. A tracer cancelled before dispatch can sometimes be redirected to another patient the same day. One that has already been dispatched and cannot be used is simply wasted.
Did you know?
The journey from cyclotron to scanner is part of your scan preparation. By the time a specialised tracer reaches the imaging centre and is injected, a portion of its original activity has already been used up — the dose is calculated to account for this.
Your appointment time is one of the calculations made at the point of ordering, which is why two patients booked for the same tracer on the same day often have appointments set minutes apart.

Why can't I come earlier or later on the same day?
Your slot is set at the time the tracer is ordered, based on expected delivery and how much activity will remain on arrival. Coming earlier risks the tracer not yet being there. Coming later risks it having decayed too far. The appointment time is a calculation — it is the window when the tracer will have enough activity to produce a useful image. The imaging centre cannot simply move it.
What is a half-life, and why does it matter for my scan?
A half-life is the time it takes for half of a radioactive tracer's activity to disappear. After several half-lives, the tracer is too weak to image reliably. PET tracers are chosen partly because they fade quickly after the scan, which limits radiation exposure. But that same short active life is what makes your appointment time critical — especially for newer tracers such as FAPI and F-DOPA, which have shorter half-lives than the standard FDG tracer.
What if I need to reschedule?
Contact your team as early as possible — ideally before the tracer is ordered or dispatched. A tracer cancelled before dispatch can sometimes be reallocated; one already dispatched is wasted. For specialised tracers such as FAPI and F-DOPA, rescheduling lead times may be longer because fewer centres have access to these agents. Give at least 24 to 48 hours' notice when you can.
Do FAPI and F-DOPA find things that FDG misses?
For certain cancers, yes. FDG detects glucose use, which covers most tumour types but can miss cancers with low glucose uptake. FAPI targets a protein associated with active tumour tissue and may show disease FDG does not — particularly in gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancers. F-DOPA is established for neuroendocrine tumours and certain brain tumours. For many other cancer types, the benefit of these newer tracers over FDG is still being studied. Your oncologist will tell you which tracer is appropriate for your diagnosis.
What does a specialised PET tracer cost at CION partner centres?
Specialised PET tracers including FAPI and F-DOPA are indicatively priced at ₹23,999 at CION partner imaging centres as of 2026, subject to change. CION coordinates these scans through partner imaging centres rather than administering them directly. Ask your care coordinator for a current estimate before your booking is confirmed, as pricing can vary by centre and by tracer.
Does what I eat before the scan affect the result?
Yes. For most PET tracers you are asked to fast for several hours beforehand. For FDG in particular, elevated blood glucose can reduce image quality because glucose and the tracer compete for uptake in the same cells. Your imaging centre will give you specific fasting instructions at the time of booking. Arriving with high blood glucose can mean the scan needs to be postponed — a significant problem when your tracer has already been dispatched.
