PSMA PET-CT

PSMA PET-CT Scan Cost — in Hyderabad

A PSMA PET-CT gives your oncologist a more precise map of prostate cancer than a standard scan. It also costs more and runs on a different schedule — here is what the price covers and why.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Bharati Devi Gorantla, Medical Oncologist, MBBS · MD · DM (Adyar, Chennai) · ECMO · MRCP SCE (UK) · Last reviewed September 2026

  • Indicative price: ₹23,999 — Available through CION partner imaging centres in Hyderabad. Confirm current pricing and tracer availability when you book.
  • More expensive than FDG — The PSMA tracer is produced in small batches and expires quickly after production, which drives the higher cost.
  • A longer visit than a standard scan — Plan to be at the centre for several hours — most of it waiting after the injection for the tracer to circulate.
  • Designed for prostate cancer — PSMA PET-CT targets a protein on prostate cancer cells that standard FDG PET-CT cannot reliably detect.

PSMA PET-CT in Hyderabad is available through CION partner imaging centres at an indicative price of ₹23,999. That figure is a guide — confirm current pricing and tracer availability when you book. The scan is a day procedure that takes several hours in total.

PET-CT at CION starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

How much does a PSMA PET-CT scan cost in Hyderabad?

PSMA PET-CT scans are available through CION partner imaging centres in Hyderabad at an indicative price of ₹23,999. This is a guide figure — confirm the current price when you call to book, as costs can change.

The scan depends on a specialist tracer that is produced in small batches and expires within hours of being made. When you book, the centre confirms that a production batch will be available on your appointment date. If a batch is delayed or cancelled, your appointment may need to move.

The indicative price typically covers the tracer, the scan, and the radiologist's written report. Ask at booking what is included in the figure you are quoted, and whether a separate consultation fee applies.

Why does PSMA PET-CT cost more than a standard PET scan?

The price difference comes almost entirely from the tracer. Standard PET scans use FDG, a radioactive glucose made in large quantities that stays usable for several hours. PSMA tracer is produced in smaller batches, for a specific set of appointments, and it expires much sooner.

Each dose is ordered for a named appointment date and cannot be carried over if that appointment changes. Unused doses cannot be held for the next patient. This short shelf life, and the complexity of producing the tracer, is what drives the higher cost compared to FDG.

You are also paying for a scan that can find what FDG typically cannot. PSMA PET-CT detects prostate cancer spread at blood marker levels where conventional imaging often shows nothing, according to NCCN and ESMO guidance.

What does the PSMA PET-CT price include — and what does it not?

The PSMA tracer

The tracer is the single most expensive element of the scan and is included in the quoted price. It is ordered for your specific appointment date and cannot be reused or transferred to another patient. If your scan is cancelled at short notice after the tracer has been prepared, ask the centre what their cancellation policy covers, as a partial charge may apply.

The scan and radiologist's written report

The scan itself and a written radiologist report are included in the price. The report describes what the images show. It is your oncologist who interprets those findings in the context of your full history and decides what happens next. A PET-CT report is not a standalone diagnosis — it is information your oncologist uses alongside everything else they know about your case.

The waiting time after injection

After the tracer is injected, you wait at the centre while it distributes through your body before the scan begins. This waiting period is part of the procedure and is not charged separately. Plan for several hours in total at the centre. Bring something to read or listen to, avoid strenuous activity on the day, and eat lightly beforehand as the centre advises.

What is usually not included

Your oncologist consultation before and after the scan is typically charged separately. If you need an appointment for the radiologist's report to be explained to you in person, confirm whether that is included. Travel, parking, and any pre-scan blood tests are not covered in the imaging price. Ask the centre directly when you book so there are no surprises on the day.

Did you know?

PSMA PET-CT detects prostate cancer recurrence at blood marker levels where conventional imaging — bone scan and CT combined — often shows nothing.

According to NCCN and ESMO guidance, this means the scan can inform treatment decisions at a point when older imaging gives no useful information.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the ₹23,999 price include everything?

The indicative price typically covers the tracer, the scan time, and the radiologist's written report. It does not usually include your oncologist consultation before or after the scan, or any pre-scan blood tests. Confirm what is included when you book, because the components can vary between partner centres. Ask specifically whether a consultation fee or the radiologist's verbal explanation of results is charged separately.

Why is the scan not always available on the date I want?

PSMA tracer is made in a cyclotron and expires quickly after production. The imaging centre orders it for a specific appointment day, which means availability depends on the production schedule at the supplying facility. Certain dates fill quickly, and production runs can be delayed or cancelled at short notice. This is why tracer availability is confirmed at the time of booking rather than when you first enquire.

How is PSMA PET-CT different from an FDG PET scan?

FDG PET-CT uses a radioactive form of glucose and works best for cancers that consume glucose rapidly. Prostate cancer often does not. PSMA PET-CT uses a tracer that targets a protein found on the surface of most prostate cancer cells, making it far more sensitive for detecting prostate cancer spread or recurrence. The two scans are not interchangeable for prostate cancer — your oncologist will specify which one is needed and why.

Will my insurance or Ayushman Bharat cover this scan?

Coverage varies. Some private health insurance policies include advanced imaging; others do not. Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) coverage for PSMA PET-CT is limited. Check with your insurer or scheme coordinator before booking. Bring your policy documents when you contact the centre so the team can confirm what documentation they need to process a claim.

How long will I be at the imaging centre?

Plan for several hours in total. After the tracer is injected, you wait at the centre while it distributes through your body — this waiting period is the longest part of the visit. The scan itself is shorter. Bring something to read or listen to, avoid strenuous activity on the day, and arrange for someone to accompany you if you prefer not to travel alone afterwards.

How do I arrange a PSMA PET-CT through CION?

Ask your CION oncologist for a referral to the partner imaging centre. Because PSMA PET-CT is not available at all locations every day, your team will identify the nearest centre offering the scan, check the next available tracer date, and confirm the current indicative price before your appointment is finalised. Bring your oncologist's referral letter and any previous imaging reports on the day.
