Fertility and family planning
Fertility preservation cost in India
Sperm banking is the least expensive fertility preservation option. Egg and embryo freezing cost considerably more because they need hormone medicines, scans and a procedure, plus yearly storage fees. Health insurance in India rarely covers fertility preservation. Costs vary widely between clinics and cities, so ask for written estimates and ask your team about any support available.
The short answer
How much does fertility preservation cost in India?
Costs vary widely between options, clinics and cities, but the pattern is consistent. Sperm banking is the least expensive option, involving semen analysis, freezing and yearly storage fees. Egg freezing and embryo freezing are considerably more expensive, because they need hormone medicines for ovarian stimulation, repeated ultrasound scans and blood tests, an egg collection procedure under sedation, laboratory work, freezing and ongoing storage. Ovarian tissue freezing involves surgery and specialised laboratory work, and is available only in a few centres. On top of the initial cost, storage fees continue every year, and using the stored material later for IVF adds further costs.
Health insurance in India rarely covers fertility preservation, even when it is needed because of cancer treatment, so most families pay out of pocket. This makes cost a real barrier, particularly for egg and embryo freezing, and it should be stated plainly rather than discovered in the middle of an already stressful time. Because exact prices change and differ between clinics, this page does not give figures. Instead, the most useful step is to ask each clinic for a written, itemised estimate that includes consultation, tests, medicines, procedures, freezing, the first year of storage and yearly renewal fees. Ask your oncology team and hospital social worker whether any charitable support, hospital schemes or payment arrangements exist. Families should not feel pressured into expensive options they cannot afford, and sperm banking or other lower-cost choices may still offer meaningful future options.
Medicines are a major part of egg freezing costs
The hormone injections used for stimulation often form a large share of the total.
Storage is ongoing
Budget for yearly storage fees for as long as material is stored.
Future use costs more
Using stored eggs, embryos or sperm later requires fertility treatment with its own costs.
Ask every clinic for a written, itemised estimate before starting, including storage renewal fees. What each option costs
What makes up the cost of each option
- Sperm banking
- Consultation, infection tests, semen analysis, freezing and yearly storage. The least expensive option.
- Egg freezing
- Consultation, hormone medicines, scans, blood tests, egg collection, freezing and yearly storage.
- Embryo freezing
- As for egg freezing, plus laboratory fertilisation and embryo culture.
- Ovarian tissue freezing
- Surgery, anaesthesia, specialised laboratory processing and storage. Limited availability.
- Storage renewal
- Yearly fees for keeping sperm, eggs, embryos or tissue frozen.
- Future fertility treatment
- IVF or insemination using stored material, with separate costs later.
Any financial help
Ways to manage the cost
Practical steps for families.
Compare written estimates
Ask two or more licensed clinics for itemised quotes where time allows.
Check that estimates include
- Medicines and scans
- Storage renewal fees
Ask about insurance in writing
Although rarely covered, check your policy and ask your insurer directly.
Talk to a social worker
Hospital social workers may know about charitable support or schemes.
Also ask about
- Payment arrangements
- Employer benefits
Consider lower-cost options
Sperm banking is affordable, and some women may choose fewer stimulation cycles.
Plan storage budgets
Set aside funds for yearly renewal so storage is not lost.

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.
Pressure to pay large amounts before a proper consultation · clinics that are not licensed for assisted reproduction · promises of certain success · delays in cancer treatment while arranging money beyond what your oncologist considers safe · being unable to afford storage renewal and risking loss of stored material. Ask your oncology team or social worker for guidance.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what a particular clinic will charge. Prices differ between clinics, cities and over time, and depend on the medicines and number of procedures needed. Written estimates from clinics are the only reliable guide.
It also cannot tell you which option gives the best value for you. That depends on your age, cancer, time available, relationship status and plans for the future, and should be discussed with a fertility specialist.
Licensed clinics
Assisted reproduction in India is regulated. Choose clinics registered under the relevant rules.
Tax considerations
Some medical expenses may qualify for tax relief. Ask a financial adviser.
Employer support
Some employers offer health benefits that include fertility services. Ask HR.
Crowdfunding
Some families use crowdfunding or community support. Use reputable platforms.
Children and teenagers
Parents may face costs for young people's preservation. Ask the paediatric team about support.
Future decisions
Consent forms cover what happens to stored material if storage fees are not paid. Read them carefully.
Emotional strain
Money worries on top of a cancer diagnosis are hard. Talk openly with family and your team.
Value of preservation
For many people, preservation offers peace of mind, even if it is never used.
Why prices vary so much
Two quotes for egg freezing can differ considerably, and the difference is not always about quality. The amount and brand of hormone medicines depend on age, ovarian reserve and response, so women who need more medicine pay more. Some clinics include scans and blood tests in a package, while others charge separately for each visit. Anaesthesia and theatre charges may or may not be included. Freezing may be charged per straw or per batch, and storage fees vary between clinics. Hospital-based units and stand-alone clinics may price differently, and costs in large cities can differ from those in smaller towns. Comparing line by line, rather than headline figures, helps avoid surprises later.
Questions to ask before you pay
Ask what exactly is included and what is not, whether medicine costs are estimated or fixed, what happens to the fee if stimulation is cancelled because of poor response or because cancer treatment must start urgently, whether storage for the first year is included, how much yearly renewal costs and how it is billed, whether there are charges for transferring stored material to another clinic later, and what the costs would be for using the material through IVF in the future. Keep all receipts, as some may be useful for insurance claims, tax purposes or reimbursement from employers.
When cost means choosing
Families sometimes have to choose between fertility preservation and other costs of cancer care, such as medicines, scans, travel and time off work. This is a hard position, and there is no single right answer. Some families prioritise sperm banking, which is less expensive, while deciding against egg freezing. Some women freeze eggs in one stimulation cycle rather than more. Others decide not to preserve fertility and plan to test fertility after treatment, knowing that donor options, surrogacy where permitted, and adoption may be possible later. A counsellor or social worker can help families talk through these choices without pressure, and your oncology team should respect whatever you decide.
Charitable and hospital support
Some cancer charities and hospital funds in India occasionally help young patients with fertility preservation costs, particularly teenagers and young adults. Availability is limited and changes over time, so ask your social worker early rather than after decisions have been made.
What to do next
Ask licensed clinics for itemised written estimates, check insurance in writing, speak to the hospital social worker about support, consider lower-cost options, budget for storage renewal, and make decisions quickly so cancer treatment is not delayed unsafely.

What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
