SDP Platelet — Availability in Hyderabad

Single donor platelets cannot be collected in advance and held for you. A donor must be identified, screened, and scheduled specifically for your transfusion. The earlier your treating team knows, the better.

  • Not a walk-in service — SDP requires a donor to be identified, screened and booked before collection can begin.
  • Advance notice is essential — Your treating team needs to know as soon as a transfusion is likely so the blood bank can arrange a donor.
  • Different from random donor platelets — SDP comes from one donor via apheresis; random donor platelets are pooled from several whole blood donations.
  • Cost is higher than RDP — SDP involves a more involved collection process, which is reflected in the indicative cost.

SDP (single donor apheresis) platelets are available at select blood banks in Hyderabad. They require a compatible donor and advance notice — they are not a walk-in service. Tell your treating team as soon as a transfusion is likely, so the blood bank can begin the arrangement.

What makes SDP different from the platelets kept in stock?

Most blood banks stock random donor platelets, which are pooled from several whole blood donations and available on short notice. SDP is different. It comes from a single donor who goes through an apheresis procedure — the machine draws blood, separates the platelets, and returns the rest while the donor is seated.

Because the collection happens fresh, a donor must be identified, screened for eligibility, and scheduled specifically for your transfusion. That process takes time. It cannot happen on the day you are admitted unless your team made the request well in advance.

Your oncologist will tell you whether you need SDP specifically. Cancer patients who receive many transfusions can develop antibodies to random donor platelets over time, and SDP from a closer-matched donor is then more effective.

How do you arrange SDP platelets in Hyderabad?

  • Tell your treating team earlyThe moment your oncologist says a platelet transfusion is likely, ask whether SDP will be needed.
  • Ask which blood bank your centre usesYour CION team works with specific partner blood banks that have apheresis capability. Get the contact details from your team.
  • Identify a willing donorA donor — family member, friend, or a community volunteer — must be willing, in good health, and within the eligibility criteria the blood bank sets.
  • Register the donor at the blood bankThe donor attends for screening. If eligible, the apheresis session is booked on a date that suits the blood bank and your treatment schedule.
  • Coordinate the timing with your admissionThe transfusion is timed to your care plan. Confirm the blood bank booking against your hospital admission date.
  • Ask about the cost before the appointmentRequest a written estimate from the blood bank when you register. Costs are indicative and vary by centre.

Did you know?

Platelets have a much shorter shelf life than red blood cells and cannot be stored for long. SDP units cannot be stockpiled — each one is collected fresh from a donor who comes in specifically for the patient receiving it.

This is why early notice changes the outcome. The blood bank needs time that a stocked supply does not.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Which blood banks in Hyderabad provide SDP?

Several large blood banks and teaching-hospital blood banks in Hyderabad have apheresis equipment and can provide SDP. Your treating team at CION will direct you to the partner blood bank they work with for your centre. Do not assume all blood banks offer apheresis collection — confirming capability before registering a donor saves a wasted trip.

How much notice does the blood bank need to arrange SDP?

Exact timelines differ by blood bank and by how quickly a donor can be screened and booked. As a practical matter, the earlier you inform your treating team the better. Same-day SDP is rarely possible. If your oncologist has told you that a transfusion is likely in the next cycle, raise the question at that appointment rather than waiting until admission day.

How much does SDP cost in Hyderabad?

Costs are indicative, vary between blood banks, and change over time. Ask the blood bank for a written estimate when you register the donor. Government blood banks tend to charge less than private ones. Some health insurance policies cover blood components — check your policy document or ask your insurer directly whether platelet transfusions are included.

What if no family donor is available for SDP?

Community blood donor groups in Hyderabad, including several active on social media platforms, sometimes connect patients with voluntary SDP donors. Your treating team or the blood bank's social worker may know of active groups. Some blood banks allow a community volunteer to donate in place of a family member — confirm the replacement policy when you first call.

Does CION arrange blood and platelets for patients?

CION coordinates transfusion-related logistics with partner blood banks and guides you on what is needed and where to go. The blood bank manages donor registration, screening, and apheresis collection. Your CION oncology team is the right starting point — they know which blood bank your centre works with and what the current process is.

My doctor has said I need SDP urgently. What do I do right now?

Call your CION treating team immediately. Do not go directly to a blood bank without speaking to your oncologist first, because the transfusion needs to be timed with your care and the blood bank needs a referral. If you cannot reach your team and you are in hospital, speak to the ward nurse or duty doctor. If you are at home and feel unwell — unusual bruising, bleeding that will not stop, or severe breathlessness — go to the nearest emergency department.
