What happens in a Telugu counselling session?

A psycho-oncology session is a private conversation with a trained counsellor who speaks Telugu.

You can talk about whatever is weighing on you most — your diagnosis, fears about treatment, how your family is coping, or decisions you are not sure how to make.

You do not need to have a specific problem ready. Many people come simply because they want to speak to someone who understands their situation, in their own language, without worrying about how it affects their family.

Can family members get counselling support too?

Yes. Caregivers and family members carry a significant burden during cancer treatment, and psycho-oncology support is available to them as well.

A joint session can help when communication has become difficult — when you are trying to protect each other from worry, or when family members are uncertain about how to help.

Tell your treatment coordinator if you would like a family member to be part of a session, or if they would prefer to speak to someone separately.

Did you know?

Psychological distress — including anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and depression — is common among people living with cancer in India, and among their family members.

ASCO and WHO both recognise psycho-oncology support as part of standard cancer care, not an optional addition. Being offered counselling is part of your treatment.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Telugu-language counselling free at CION?

Psycho-oncology support is included as part of cancer care at CION and there is no separate charge for it. If you are being treated at a CION centre, ask your treatment coordinator to connect you with the psycho-oncology team. You do not need a formal referral or a separate appointment — asking is enough.

How do I ask for counselling at my CION centre?

Mention it to your treatment coordinator at your next visit — the person who manages your appointments and paperwork at the centre. You can also call 1800 202 8726. You do not need to explain why or justify the request. Saying you would like to speak to someone is enough for the referral to be made.

Can I bring a family member to my counselling session?

Yes. You can come alone or bring a family member or caregiver. Some people find it easier to talk privately first and involve a family member later. Others want someone present from the start. Tell your treatment coordinator what you would prefer and the session will be arranged accordingly.

What if my anxiety or depression feels too serious for counselling?

Your psycho-oncology team will refer you to a psychiatrist if your symptoms need medication or specialist assessment. Psychiatrists who work with cancer patients understand the treatment-related causes of anxiety and depression, and they can provide support in Telugu. This referral is arranged through your oncology team and does not require you to approach anyone separately.

What if I feel embarrassed to ask for counselling?

Many people feel this way, particularly when family members are not aware of how much they are struggling. Asking for counselling is not a sign of weakness, and your care team will not treat it as unusual. Everything discussed in a session is confidential between you and your counsellor, unless there is a safety concern that needs to be addressed.

Is there Telugu-language cancer support available outside of CION?

The Telangana and Andhra Pradesh government health networks include psycho-social support within some oncology departments. Ask your CION team whether a community resource would be helpful in your situation. Before following up with any organisation, confirm it is currently active and offers Telugu-language services — contact details change, and the most reliable way to find current options is through your treating centre.
