Travelling to Hyderabad for Chemotherapy — Planning the Whole Course

If you live outside Hyderabad, chemotherapy will mean travelling to a CION centre several times over the course of treatment. Knowing how many trips to expect, and what to arrange before your first one, makes each visit less disruptive — for you and for your family.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Owais Mohammed, Medical Oncologist · Last reviewed September 2026

  • Six to eight trips is typical — Most chemotherapy schedules mean this many return visits over three to five months.
  • Day care, not admission — You arrive, receive your infusion, and return home the same day for most regimens.
  • Plan all the dates at the start — Knowing the full cycle schedule early means your family can protect those days.
  • Some monitoring may be arrangeable locally — Ask your oncologist — but confirm the arrangement exists before you rely on it.

A standard chemotherapy course means six to eight return trips to Hyderabad over three to five months, depending on your regimen. Your oncologist confirms the total number of cycles at your first appointment. Ask for the schedule in writing, ask which tests might be arrangeable locally, and confirm your government scheme coverage before treatment starts.

How many trips will chemotherapy actually require?

A three-weekly regimen typically runs six cycles, which means six return trips over about four to five months. A fortnightly regimen may mean eight or more. Your oncologist will confirm the full schedule at your first appointment — ask for it in writing so your household can plan around the dates.

Each session is given as day care at CION centres. You arrive, receive the infusion, and go home the same day. Hospital admission is not part of most standard chemotherapy cycles.

Ask your oncologist at your first visit whether any blood tests between cycles can be done at a laboratory closer to home. Do not assume that arrangement exists. Your team needs to confirm it before you skip a trip for monitoring.

What do I need to arrange before my first chemotherapy visit?

  • Ask your oncologist for the complete cycle schedule — total number of visits, approximate dates, and how long each session is expected to take.
  • Confirm your government scheme enrollment before treatment starts. In Telangana, this is Aarogyasri. In Andhra Pradesh, it is NTR Vaidya Seva. Ask what your specific treatment plan is covered for.
  • Work out your travel route to the CION centre — train, bus or road — and identify a backup option before your first appointment.
  • Arrange overnight accommodation near the centre if you are travelling from a distant district and need to arrive the evening before.
  • Tell your employer or family the cycle dates early so those days can be kept clear.
  • Bring all previous records to your first appointment — biopsy report, imaging, discharge summaries, and a full list of medicines you currently take.
  • Ask which blood tests or scans might be arranged locally between cycles, and get your team's confirmation before treating that as settled.

Did you know?

Chemotherapy is designed to be given as day care for most solid-tumour regimens. You are not admitted to hospital for each cycle — you arrive, receive the infusion, and return home.

This is standard practice, not a concession. The treatment is built around your life continuing between visits.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many times will I need to travel to Hyderabad for chemotherapy?

The number depends on your regimen. Most three-weekly courses run six cycles, which means six trips over about four to five months. Fortnightly regimens may run for eight or more. Your oncologist will confirm the total at your first appointment. Ask for the full cycle schedule in writing so your family knows the commitment before treatment begins.

Can blood tests or monitoring be done closer to home between cycles?

Sometimes, yes — but only when your team has set up the arrangement and confirmed it is reliable for your specific regimen. Do not skip a trip on the assumption that it is in place. Ask your oncologist at your first visit what is possible, get confirmation before relying on it, and if you send results from a local laboratory, bring the report to your next session.

Which government scheme covers chemotherapy, and how do I access it?

In Telangana, the relevant scheme is Aarogyasri. In Andhra Pradesh, it is NTR Vaidya Seva. Both can cover cancer treatment at empanelled hospitals. Confirm your enrollment and check what your specific treatment plan is covered for before your first cycle — not after it has started. Bring your scheme card and any documentation to your first appointment so coverage can be confirmed at the outset.

What is the best way to travel from a district town to the CION centre?

That depends on which town you are coming from and which CION centre you are attending. When you book your first appointment, ask the centre team which train station or bus stand is nearest and what the typical travel time is from your area. Keep a backup plan in case of delays. If the journey is long, consider arriving the evening before so that a delayed train does not affect your treatment time.

How long does a chemotherapy session take at CION?

It varies by regimen and by drug. Some infusions complete in two to three hours; others take closer to six. Your team will confirm the expected duration for your specific treatment at your first appointment. Plan for a full day on every cycle day — if the session finishes earlier, that is a bonus rather than something to count on when booking your return journey.

What documents should I bring to each chemotherapy appointment?

To your first appointment, bring everything: biopsy report, imaging, discharge summaries from any previous treatment, and a complete list of medicines you take regularly. For each subsequent visit, bring the cycle record or treatment summary from your previous session, your current medicine list, your government scheme card if applicable, and a photo ID. If blood tests were done at a local laboratory before the cycle, bring those reports with you.
