Chemotherapy in Hyderabad — From Nellore, Tirupati and Kadapa

Vellore and Chennai are much closer to Tirupati than Hyderabad. Vellore is roughly 90 to 100 km away and Chennai around 150 km — journeys of one to three hours by road or rail. Hyderabad is several times farther and takes the better part of a day each way. If your oncologist is already in Hyderabad, it may make sense to continue there. If you are yet to choose a centre, Chennai and Vellore are significantly more convenient from Tirupati.

For most patients in Nellore, Chennai is considerably closer — roughly three hours by train, compared to seven or more to Hyderabad. That difference matters when you are making the journey six to eight times over a four-month course. If your treating doctor is in Hyderabad or you have a referral there, continue as planned. If you have flexibility, a centre closer to Nellore or in Chennai may reduce the physical and financial burden substantially.

From Kadapa, Hyderabad is closer than Chennai. The road journey to Hyderabad is approximately six to seven hours; Chennai is farther. This makes Hyderabad the more practical destination from Kadapa if the journey is necessary. Nellore, Tirupati and Kadapa are all in Andhra Pradesh, so your scheme is NTR Vaidya Seva — not Aarogyasri, which is the Telangana government scheme. NTR Vaidya Seva covers cancer treatment including chemotherapy at empanelled hospitals. Bring your scheme card, Aadhaar card and medical records to the hospital's scheme desk on your first visit, and ask what documents they need before you travel.

For most standard chemotherapy regimens, no. Chemotherapy at CION is given as day care — you arrive, receive treatment over a few hours, and return home the same day. Some regimens involve longer infusions or require overnight observation, and your oncologist will tell you in advance if that applies to you. Ask before your first session whether any of your planned cycles involve an overnight stay so you can arrange accommodation if needed.

Bring your biopsy report, all scan reports and imaging discs, blood test results from the past two to three months, and any discharge summary from a hospital admission related to your cancer. Also bring your NTR Vaidya Seva card, Aadhaar card and a written list of every medicine you take — including Ayurvedic or herbal preparations. Have originals and photocopies ready for the scheme desk. Your companion can carry food, water and a phone charger, since the first appointment is often longer than later visits.
