Is Chemotherapy Covered — Under Aarogyasri?

No. Aarogyasri is Telangana's state health scheme. NTR Vaidya Seva is Andhra Pradesh's separate scheme. They are administered independently and are not interchangeable — an Aarogyasri card cannot be used at an NTR Vaidya Seva counter, and vice versa. Both cover chemotherapy through a package system and require pre-authorisation before each cycle, but the formularies and empanelled hospitals are separate. If you are unsure which applies to you, the answer depends on which state you are registered as a resident in.

In most cases, an Aarogyasri card does not cover treatment at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh unless that hospital is also empanelled under PM-JAY nationally. Before travelling for treatment, call the hospital directly and ask whether they accept Aarogyasri. If you qualify for Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, a national portability provision may apply — ask the hospital's scheme desk about that separately. Do not assume cross-state coverage without confirming it first.

What this means in practice is that you may benefit from a combined formulary and a higher combined ceiling than either scheme alone. Start with two questions before agreeing to the cycle. First, ask whether an equivalent listed regimen is clinically appropriate for your specific cancer — in many cases it is. Pre-authorisation takes longer for a first cycle, because the full case record needs to be reviewed, than for repeat cycles on the same approved regimen. Hospitals that treat large numbers of cancer patients — which most empanelled oncology centres do — have coordinators who manage this routinely. Ask the scheme desk on your first visit what lead time to expect for subsequent cycles, and build that into your schedule rather than arriving on the day of treatment expecting same-day approval.

It depends on the package. Most approved chemotherapy packages bundle standard supportive medicines — including antiemetics, hydration fluids and pre-medications — as part of the regimen cost, because they are inseparable from the treatment. Some supportive medicines, particularly newer or branded versions, fall outside the bundle. Ask your chemotherapy coordinator before your first cycle which supportive medicines are inside your approved package and which, if any, you will need to arrange separately. That question takes a few minutes and can prevent an unexpected bill on the day of treatment.
