Recovery after treatment

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation — for Cancer Patients in Hyderabad

Treatment for cancer often leaves the body weaker, and recovery does not always happen on its own. Physiotherapy and specialist rehabilitation in Hyderabad address neuropathy in your hands and feet, swelling after surgery, and the loss of strength that treatment can cause.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Owais Mohammed, Medical Oncologist · Last reviewed September 2026

  • Neuropathy — Tingling or numbness in your hands and feet after chemotherapy can improve with targeted physiotherapy and balance exercises.
  • Lymphoedema — Persistent swelling in an arm or leg after surgery or radiation needs specialist management — and starting early matters.
  • Deconditioning — Fatigue and muscle loss during and after treatment are expected, and graded rehabilitation can help you regain function.
  • Start during treatment if possible — Waiting until all treatment ends is not always the right approach. Some rehabilitation is more effective when it begins early.

Cancer physiotherapy in Hyderabad covers three main areas: peripheral neuropathy from chemotherapy, lymphoedema after surgery or radiation, and general deconditioning during treatment. Services are available at private clinics, government hospitals, and through your CION care team, who can give a referral based on what your body needs now.

What cancer rehabilitation is available in Hyderabad?

Three conditions account for most physiotherapy referrals after cancer treatment: peripheral neuropathy, lymphoedema, and deconditioning. Each has its own specialist approach and its own best time to start.

Peripheral neuropathy — tingling, numbness or weakness in the hands and feet — is a common side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs. A physiotherapist trained in this area works on balance, strength and sensory retraining to reduce the risk of falls and improve day-to-day function.

Lymphoedema is persistent swelling, usually in one arm or leg, that can develop after lymph nodes are removed or irradiated. It is managed with manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments and specific exercises. Early management prevents it from becoming severe and harder to control.

Deconditioning is the generalised loss of strength, stamina and fitness that accumulates during treatment. Graded exercise, breathing work and functional training — guided by a physiotherapist who understands your treatment — can help you rebuild progressively and safely.

Signs you should ask for a physiotherapy referral

  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in your hands or feet during or after chemotherapy
  • Swelling in one arm or leg that has not settled after two weeks
  • Shoulder stiffness or reduced range of movement after breast or axillary surgery
  • Unusual tiredness or breathlessness during activity that has not improved after a month
  • Balance problems or a feeling of unsteadiness when walking
  • Difficulty with everyday tasks such as climbing stairs or lifting

Did you know?

Most cancer patients who would benefit from physiotherapy are never referred for it.

ASCO identifies cancer rehabilitation as a core component of oncology care — not a luxury or an afterthought — and recommends that every patient be assessed for rehabilitation needs from the point of diagnosis, not only after treatment ends.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the right time to start physiotherapy after cancer treatment?

Earlier than most people expect. For neuropathy, the best time to start is when symptoms first appear — often during chemotherapy, not after it ends. For lymphoedema, treatment should begin as soon as swelling is noticed. For general deconditioning, rehabilitation during treatment is often safer and more effective than waiting until everything is finished. Ask your oncologist at your next appointment rather than waiting for a recommendation that may not come on its own.

What does cancer physiotherapy cost in Hyderabad?

Costs vary by setting and by how many sessions are needed. Private physiotherapy clinics charge per session, and the number of sessions depends on the condition and how it responds. Government hospitals in Hyderabad offer physiotherapy services at subsidised rates; your CION care team can advise which facilities are appropriate for your situation. If you have health insurance, check your policy before starting, as some insurers cover cancer rehabilitation. Any cost figure you see online is indicative and quickly dated — ask the clinic directly for current charges.

Can I do physiotherapy exercises at home, or do I need to attend a clinic?

Both. The initial assessment must be done with a trained physiotherapist, who will evaluate your condition and establish what is appropriate for you. After that, most programmes include a home exercise component. For lymphoedema in particular, exercising without proper training first can worsen the condition — an assessment before starting matters. Your physiotherapist will tell you when you are ready to continue mainly at home and what to watch for if symptoms change.

Is physiotherapy safe during active chemotherapy?

Appropriately structured exercise is generally safe during chemotherapy and is supported by ASCO and ESMO guidance. The type and intensity are adjusted around your treatment schedule, your blood counts, and how you are feeling on a given day. You should avoid exercise when your counts are very low or when you have a fever. Your care team will guide you on what to avoid and when. Do not start a new exercise programme without letting your oncologist know first.

Will my oncologist refer me, or do I need to find a physiotherapist myself?

Ask directly rather than waiting. Referrals for physiotherapy are not always offered spontaneously, even when the need is clear. Tell your oncologist or your CION nurse what you have noticed — neuropathy, swelling, fatigue, or reduced function — and ask whether a referral is appropriate. CION's care team can coordinate a referral based on your needs. If you find a physiotherapist independently, tell your oncologist so they are aware and can share relevant clinical information.

Is lymphoedema permanent?

Not necessarily, but it becomes harder to manage the longer it is left untreated. Many people with lymphoedema achieve good control with consistent treatment — a combination of manual drainage, compression garments and exercises — and are able to prevent it from worsening. The goal is control and quality of life rather than complete elimination of swelling. Early intervention gives the best outcome. If you have noticed swelling that has lasted more than two weeks after surgery or radiation, ask for a referral now rather than watching and waiting.
