  • Pain and symptoms can be managed — Pain, breathlessness, nausea and fatigue can all be treated — you do not have to endure them as a part of cancer care.
  • Government services exist in Telangana — Government cancer hospitals in Telangana provide palliative care at low or no cost, and health schemes may cover your care.

When should you ask for palliative care?

Ask now, at whatever point you are at. WHO and ASCO guidance is clear that palliative care works best when it starts early — alongside active treatment, not after it ends.

People who receive palliative care from early in their diagnosis report better symptom control and better quality of life overall. It does not interfere with your treatment or reduce your time on it.

The most common reason people wait is the belief that asking signals the treatment is not working. It does not. Asking for symptom support is a practical step, no different from asking for anti-nausea medicine during chemotherapy.

Does palliative care in Hyderabad cost anything?

Government cancer hospitals in Telangana provide palliative care at low or no cost. The Aarogyasri scheme in Telangana and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana both cover a range of cancer care — confirm with the hospital desk whether your specific palliative care is included before care is given, not after.

Your CION team or the palliative care coordinator at your treating hospital can refer you to community services in your area, including voluntary home care teams. Ask your care team for referrals to what is available where you live.

Private hospital palliative care carries a fee. If cost is a concern, saying so to your care team will usually open a conversation about alternatives.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does asking for palliative care mean my cancer treatment has stopped?

No. Palliative care runs alongside your cancer treatment, not instead of it. Most people who receive it are still having chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation or targeted therapy at the same time. The palliative care team focuses on your symptoms and quality of life, while your oncology team continues your active treatment. The two teams work together. Asking for palliative care is not a signal of giving up — it is a step to feel better while treatment continues.

Is palliative care the same as hospice care?

They overlap but are not the same. Palliative care is symptom support that can start at any point, including during active treatment. Hospice care is a specific type of palliative care for people who are no longer pursuing treatment aimed at the cancer itself, and whose focus has shifted fully to comfort. You can receive palliative care for years alongside active treatment. Hospice care becomes relevant much later, and only if that is the path you and your team decide on together.

Can palliative care be given at home?

Yes. Home-based palliative care is an important part of what is available in Hyderabad. Community palliative care teams can visit to assess your pain, review your medicines, support your family and advise on helpful changes at home. This matters especially when travel is difficult because of weakness, pain or distance. Ask your CION team or the palliative care coordinator at your treating hospital to refer you to a service that covers your area.

Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover palliative care?

Both schemes cover a range of cancer care, and some palliative services — including inpatient symptom management — may fall within the covered packages. Coverage depends on the specific service, the empanelled hospital and your scheme eligibility. The most reliable way to check is to ask the hospital's scheme desk before the care is given, not after. Your CION team can help you know what to ask.

How do I raise palliative care with my oncologist?

You can say: 'I am struggling with pain and I want to know what support is available.' You do not need to use the words palliative care if they feel difficult. Your oncologist will not interpret the question as losing confidence in treatment. Name the symptom that is making your life harder — pain, breathlessness, poor sleep, loss of appetite — and that is all the conversation needs to open. You can also call your CION centre directly and ask to be connected with the care team.

What happens at a first palliative care appointment?

The team will ask about every symptom that is bothering you — pain, breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, sleep, appetite, mood. They will ask where the pain is, what makes it better or worse, and what medicines you are already taking. They will then work with your oncology team to adjust your medicines or arrange further support. Family members are welcome and should bring a list of any concerns they have about caring for you at home.
