Booking a PET-CT in India — When You Are Abroad
You can arrange a PET-CT scan for a parent in India without flying back. Most of the coordination happens by phone and email. What you need to know is what you can do remotely, and what needs someone on the ground.

How do you book a PET-CT scan in India from another country?
Call or WhatsApp the CION care coordinator for the centre closest to your parent. You do not need to be in India and you do not need a local contact to make the call on your behalf.
Have the referring doctor's letter ready to share by email or WhatsApp before or immediately after the call. If your parent has had previous scans, send those reports too — the radiologist uses them for comparison.
CION coordinates PET-CT appointments through partner imaging centres. Your care coordinator will confirm which centre is involved, the date and time, and the preparation your parent needs to follow beforehand.
What to have ready before you call
- Referring doctor's letterConfirms the clinical reason for the scan and which areas need to be imaged. A scanned PDF or photograph is accepted.

- Your parent's government IDAadhaar, passport, or voter card — needed to register the appointment and label the scan correctly.
- A WhatsApp-reachable number in IndiaA family member or neighbour who can receive messages on scan day if your call drops. Not always essential, but useful.
- Your payment methodInternational card, wire transfer, or an arrangement for local payment — decide this before you call so the booking is not held up.

Who needs to be with your parent on the day of the scan?
One adult companion needs to be present for the duration of the scan. That person does not need to be a relative — a trusted neighbour, a family friend, or a hired medical escort all work.
The companion's role is practical: to help with check-in, to wait during the procedure, and to collect the printed report if one is issued on the day. They do not need to understand the medical details.
If your parent is travelling some distance to reach the centre, plan for them to arrive with time to spare. Preparation instructions — usually a fasting period and restrictions on certain medications — will be shared when you book. Make sure your parent and their companion both have these in writing before the day.
Did you know?
ASCO and ESMO both recommend that staging PET-CT is completed before the multidisciplinary team finalises a treatment plan.
Booking the scan before the first oncology appointment — rather than after it — can save meaningful weeks in the overall timeline. For families coordinating from abroad against a treatment start date, that window is worth planning around.

Frequently asked questions
How do I pay for a PET-CT scan in India from abroad?
You can pay by international debit or credit card, or by direct bank transfer to the centre. Ask your care coordinator which options are available and for the payment details in writing before you call with your card. Some families arrange for a local relative to pay in person and are reimbursed separately — that works too, as long as payment is confirmed before the scan date. Keep the receipt for any insurance or reimbursement claim.
How far in advance should I book?
Book at least five to seven working days ahead where possible. Slots at partner imaging centres can fill, particularly mid-week. If your parent's oncologist has indicated urgency, say so when you call — some slots are held for clinical priority. For staging scans ahead of a treatment start date, book as soon as the referral letter is issued. More lead time also gives you room to reschedule if your parent's travel arrangements change.
Can I get the PET-CT report sent to my parent's doctor overseas?
The written report — a PDF of the radiologist's findings — can be emailed to you, and you can share it with any doctor outside India. Ask for this when you book and confirm the email address is correct. Most overseas oncologists can work from the written report. If your specialist needs the raw image files, ask the imaging centre directly — availability varies, and you may need to request a CD or a secure transfer link separately.
My parent has no companion available on the day. What can we do?
If no family member or friend is available, a hired medical escort or patient support service can fill this role. Your CION care coordinator may be able to suggest options in your parent's area. Plan this before you book, not on the morning of the scan — last-minute arrangements are stressful for your parent and carry real risk of missing the slot. Some charitable organisations in larger cities also offer escort support for patients who need to travel alone.
What preparation does my parent need to do before a PET-CT?
Preparation instructions are given at the time of booking and must be followed carefully — if they are not, the scan usually has to be rescheduled. They typically involve a fasting period and restrictions on physical activity and certain medications in the hours before the scan. Ask for these instructions by WhatsApp or email at the time of booking so there is nothing lost in a phone conversation. Your parent's companion should also have a copy and know what to check on the day.
What if the appointment needs to change after it is booked?
Call the care coordinator as early as possible if the date needs to move. Cancellations made with enough notice allow the slot to be offered to another patient. Whether any payment already made is transferable or refundable depends on the specific centre's policy — ask about this when you book so you are not caught off guard later. Rescheduling is usually straightforward with adequate notice, but availability for the new date is not guaranteed.
