Is a PET-CT Scan Covered by — Health Insurance in India?
Most Indian health insurance policies do not cover a PET-CT ordered as an outpatient test. Whether yours does depends on one key distinction in your policy document — and it is worth checking before the scan, not after.

- Inpatient vs outpatient — Most policies cover PET-CT only when it is part of a hospital admission, not as a standalone test.
- Pre-authorisation matters — Skipping pre-authorisation is one of the most common reasons claims are rejected, even for scans that would otherwise have been covered.
- Government schemes have separate rules — Aarogyasri and EHS cover PET-CT for approved cancer indications at empanelled centres.
- Exclusions are in the policy, not the brochure — The summary brochure rarely lists diagnostic exclusions. The full policy document does.

Most Indian health insurance policies cover PET-CT only when it forms part of a hospital admission, not as a standalone test. Coverage also depends on your policy's diagnostic clause and whether you got pre-authorisation. Check the policy document before the scan — decisions made after are harder to reverse.
PET-CT at CION starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
What does insurance typically pay for a PET-CT?
| Coverage scenario | Typical insurance position | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| PET-CT ordered during a hospital admission | Usually covered under the hospitalisation benefit | Must be clinically ordered for the admitted diagnosis |
| PET-CT as a standalone outpatient test | Often excluded unless the policy includes an OPD diagnostic rider | OPD cover is a separate add-on with most Indian insurers |
| Aarogyasri / EHS (Telangana, AP) | Covered for approved cancer indications up to the scheme ceiling | Treating hospital must be an empanelled Aarogyasri network centre |
| CGHS / ECHS beneficiaries | Covered at defined CGHS rates at empanelled centres | Referral from a CGHS-authorised doctor required before the scan |
| Indicative private-pay range (2025) | Patient pays directly — not applicable to insurance | ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 or above depending on city, centre and scan type |
Why does being an outpatient usually mean no coverage?
Most Indian health policies were written around hospitalisation. Tests ordered because you are already admitted are treated as part of the treatment cost and are usually reimbursed alongside the admission bill.
A PET-CT ordered in the outpatient department — even when medically necessary for a cancer diagnosis — sits in a different category. Most standard policies exclude outpatient diagnostics unless you hold a specific OPD rider or day-care clause that explicitly covers advanced imaging.
The line between the two matters. If your doctor has ordered the scan as part of a hospital admission or an ongoing cancer day-care treatment, tell your insurer that explicitly when you call for pre-authorisation. How the scan is framed in the clinical documentation can determine whether it is covered.

How to check your coverage before the scan
Read the Exclusions section of your actual policy document
Not the brochure — the full policy document. Search for the words 'diagnostic', 'outpatient' and 'PET' to find what applies to your plan.
Call your insurer's pre-authorisation helpline
Ask specifically whether a PET-CT ordered for your diagnosis, in your clinical setting — inpatient or outpatient — is covered. Note the name of the person you speak to and the date.
Get a written referral from your oncologist
A referral letter stating the clinical indication, the treating diagnosis, and the reason the scan is required gives the insurer the documentation it needs to process your request.
Apply for pre-authorisation before booking the scan
Most insurers require pre-authorisation for advanced diagnostics. Applying after the scan — or not at all — is one of the most common grounds for rejection, regardless of the clinical justification.
Confirm the imaging centre is on your insurer's panel
Cashless coverage applies only at empanelled network centres. At a non-network centre, you pay upfront and claim reimbursement later, which takes longer and may be settled at a lower rate than you paid.
Did you know?
IRDAI's Standardised Health Insurance Products regulations require insurers to specify in the policy document whether advanced diagnostic tests are covered and under what conditions.
That information is almost never in the brochure. It is in the Exclusions and Conditions sections — usually several pages in, in smaller print. Reading those sections before booking is the only way to know what your policy actually covers.

Frequently asked questions
Is PET-CT covered under a standard health insurance policy in India?
It depends on how the scan is ordered. Most standard policies cover PET-CT when it is part of a hospital admission, treating it as a diagnostic test ordered for an admitted patient. The same scan ordered in the outpatient department — even for the same diagnosis — is often excluded. Whether you have an OPD rider, a day-care clause that applies, or a policy that explicitly includes advanced diagnostics determines the answer for your specific plan. Reading your policy's Exclusions section, not the brochure, is the only reliable way to check.
Do I need pre-authorisation before booking a PET-CT?
Yes, for most policies. Pre-authorisation is a formal confirmation from your insurer that the scan is covered under your plan, obtained before the procedure takes place. Without it, the insurer can reject the claim even if the scan would otherwise have been covered. Call the pre-authorisation helpline printed on your insurance card as soon as your doctor orders the scan — not on the morning of the appointment. Keep a record of your reference number and the name of the person who confirmed it.
What are the most common reasons a PET-CT claim is rejected?
The most common reasons are: the scan was ordered as an outpatient test and the policy excludes outpatient diagnostics; pre-authorisation was not obtained before the scan; the imaging centre is not on the insurer's empanelled network; the clinical indication does not match the covered conditions listed in the policy; or the documentation submitted with the claim was incomplete. Ask your insurer for the specific rejection reason in writing, because each of these has a different remedy, and a generic rejection letter is not enough to know which applies to you.
Is PET-CT covered under Aarogyasri or EHS in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh?
Yes, for approved cancer indications — but only at empanelled hospitals and only up to the scheme's reimbursement ceiling. The treating hospital must be listed as an Aarogyasri network hospital, and the indication for the scan must match those specified by the scheme. Not every cancer diagnosis is on the approved list. Ask the hospital's Aarogyasri or EHS desk before you book, as they can check your eligibility against the current approved procedure list. PET-CT at CION is coordinated through partner imaging centres, and eligibility will depend on whether those centres are on the scheme panel.
What can I do if my insurer rejects the claim?
You have the right to appeal. Ask your insurer for the rejection reason in writing, then submit a formal grievance with supporting documents — your oncologist's referral, the clinical indication, and the policy clause you believe covers the scan. If the insurer does not resolve it within the timeframe IRDAI specifies, you can escalate to the Insurance Ombudsman in your region, which is a free process. IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal also accepts complaints if the insurer's internal grievance process does not resolve your case.
Does it matter which imaging centre does the scan?
Yes, for cashless claims. Cashless coverage — where the insurer settles directly with the centre and you pay nothing at the time — applies only at centres that are part of your insurer's network. At a non-network centre, you pay the full cost at the time of the scan and submit a reimbursement claim afterwards. Reimbursement takes longer to process and may be paid at a rate lower than what you actually paid. Confirm with your insurer which centres in your city are on their panel before booking, so you are not managing a reimbursement process on top of your treatment.
