PET-CT in North Andhra: — When to Scan Locally and When to Travel

If your treating oncologist is in Visakhapatnam, you almost certainly do not need to travel to Hyderabad for a PET-CT. CION coordinates scans through partner imaging centres in Vizag, and the report reaches your team the same day.

  • Local is usually the right answer — Patients in Vizag and Vizianagaram can access PET-CT without an overnight trip to Hyderabad.
  • Reports travel digitally — Your CION team receives the scan report the same day. You do not need to carry films anywhere.
  • Travel makes sense in one situation only — If your CION consultation is also in Hyderabad, combining both in one visit saves a second long journey.
  • Your slot is fixed — The radiotracer is prepared specifically for you each morning and cannot be stored or reused.

If you are in Visakhapatnam or Vizianagaram, a local PET-CT through a CION partner imaging centre is usually the right choice. Travelling to Hyderabad for the scan alone adds cost and fatigue without changing the image quality. Your treating team in Vizag receives the report the same day.

CION's PET-CT scans in Hyderabad start at Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

When is the trip to Hyderabad actually worth it?

If your treating oncologist is in Vizag and your referral is to a Vizag partner centre, there is no clinical reason to travel to Hyderabad for the scan alone. The image quality and the report turnaround are the same.

The one situation where Hyderabad makes sense is when you have a CION consultation appointment there on the same visit. Combining the scan and the review in one trip saves a second long journey.

Patients from Vizianagaram are roughly 45 minutes from Vizag by road. Patients from Srikakulam are about two hours away. Both are manageable as day trips. Hyderabad is an overnight train or a flight — and an overnight stay you may not need.

What do you need to do before your PET-CT appointment?

  • Fast as your team directsDo not eat or drink anything sweet — fruit juice, chai with sugar, biscuits — on scan morning. Plain water is usually fine. Your team will give you the exact instructions for your scan type.
  • Tell the centre if you have diabetesBlood sugar levels affect how the tracer distributes in your body. The centre may check your reading when you arrive and may need to reschedule if your levels are not in range on the day.
  • Arrange a driver — do not come aloneYou receive a radiotracer injection before the scan and should not drive yourself home. Ask a family member to accompany you for the full appointment.
  • Wear loose clothing with no metalLeave jewellery, underwired bras and metal hair clips at home. You will be asked to remove them before entering the scanner.
  • Bring your CION referral letter and all previous scan reportsThe radiologist needs the clinical context to write an accurate report. A missing referral letter can delay the interpretation.
  • Confirm your slot 24 hours beforeYour dose is prepared fresh for you each morning. A same-day cancellation wastes a dose that cannot be reused. Call the day before to confirm you are coming.

Did you know?

The radiotracer used in PET-CT has a short active window and is prepared fresh each morning for the patients booked that day.

This is why your slot cannot run late and cannot be moved to the next morning: the dose prepared for you cannot be stored or given to another patient.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a PET-CT centre in Vizianagaram itself?

PET-CT requires specialised facilities to produce the radiotracer, which means it is available in larger cities rather than every district town. Visakhapatnam has PET-CT capacity through partner imaging centres, and Vizianagaram is roughly 45 minutes by road — a practical day trip rather than an overnight journey. Your CION team will raise the referral to the appropriate Vizag centre and integrate the report into your care plan.

Do I need to carry my PET-CT films or CD to Hyderabad after the scan?

No. Reports from CION partner imaging centres are shared digitally with your treating team. You do not need to carry physical films across a long journey. If you do receive a CD, bring it to your next consultation rather than making a separate trip. If a second opinion in Hyderabad is planned, the imaging centre can share the images directly with that team.

How far in advance do I need to book a PET-CT in Vizag?

Availability varies and CION cannot guarantee specific slots. Your CION team raises the referral, and the partner centre contacts you directly to confirm the appointment. Slots are generally available within a reasonable time for patients referred through the CION system. Calling early in the week tends to give you more choice of day and time.

What happens if my blood sugar is high on the morning of the scan?

High blood sugar affects how the tracer concentrates in tissues, which can make the scan harder to read accurately. The centre will check your reading when you arrive. If it is above the level they can work with, they will reschedule rather than proceed — not to inconvenience you, but because a compromised scan can lead to a wrong clinical decision. Tell your CION team in advance if you are diabetic so they can give you specific instructions around insulin and food timing.

Can patients from Srikakulam travel to Vizag and return home the same day?

Usually yes. Srikakulam is roughly two hours from Vizag by road, and the full PET-CT appointment — including the wait after the tracer injection — typically runs to a few hours. Most patients from Srikakulam can complete the scan and travel home the same day. Start early so the return journey is comfortable, and arrange a driver — you should not drive after the tracer injection.

Will my CION team help book the PET-CT, or do I arrange it myself?

Your CION team raises the referral and coordinates with the partner imaging centre. You do not need to approach the centre independently. Once the referral is submitted, the centre will contact you to confirm the slot. Bring the referral letter with you on scan day — the radiologist needs it to report the scan in the right clinical context.
