What Happens If You Miss — Your PET-CT Slot?
Missing a PET-CT appointment is not the same as missing most medical appointments. A radioactive tracer was prepared specifically for you that morning, and once the window passes it cannot be reused. Knowing what to do in the next few minutes changes your options.

- The tracer is time-sensitive — The radioactive tracer decays rapidly and cannot be held for a later slot — once the window passes, it is discarded.
- A charge may apply — If the tracer was already prepared when you cancelled, the imaging centre may charge for it. The notice you gave is the key factor.
- Same-day rebook is rarely possible — A new tracer order takes time to prepare and deliver. Missing a slot almost always means a fresh appointment on another day.
- Call immediately — The sooner the centre knows, the more options remain — including avoiding a charge if the tracer has not yet been prepared.

If you miss your PET-CT appointment, the radioactive tracer prepared for you is almost certainly wasted — it cannot be stored. Whether a charge applies depends on how much notice you gave. Same-day rebooking is rarely possible. Call the imaging centre and your CION care coordinator the moment you know you cannot attend.
CION offers PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
Is the tracer wasted if you miss your slot?
Yes, in almost every case. The radioactive tracer used in a PET-CT — usually a form of glucose called FDG — is prepared specifically for your scan time. Its radioactivity decays rapidly, so it cannot be stored and reused.
If you miss without warning, the tracer is discarded. This is not a minor inconvenience — it is a real cost, and most imaging centres treat it as one.
CION coordinates PET-CT with partner imaging centres, not its own scanners. The tracer policy and whether a charge applies is set by that imaging centre. Your CION care coordinator can find out what applies to your specific booking.
What to do the moment you know you cannot make it
- Call the imaging centre directly — the number is on your appointment confirmation.
- Call your CION care coordinator at the same time so they can speak to the centre on your behalf.
- Note the time you called. Many centres consider how much notice was given when deciding whether a charge applies.
- Ask whether the tracer has been prepared yet. If it has not, you may avoid the tracer cost entirely.
- Ask for the earliest available rebook slot — do not assume it will be the next day.
- If your family has already travelled a long distance to reach the centre, tell your coordinator. They may be able to flag your case for the rebook queue.
Can you rebook your PET-CT the same day?
Rarely. A replacement tracer order has to be placed, prepared at a cyclotron facility, and transported to the imaging centre — that process usually takes longer than the same day allows.
Occasionally a centre will have a spare slot from another patient's cancellation. Whether this applies depends on the centre's schedule and how much time remains in the session. Ask directly — do not assume it is impossible, but do not plan around it.
The most useful thing you can do is call as early as possible. The sooner the centre knows, the more options remain.

What happens depending on when you cancel
| Situation | Tracer outcome | Charge likely? | Rebook timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel 24 hours or more before | Not yet prepared | Usually no | Next available slot |
| Cancel on the morning of the scan | May be in preparation | Possibly — depends on centre policy | Next available slot, rarely same day |
| Arrive late but reach the centre | May still be usable if within window | Usually no if scan proceeds | Scan may still proceed — tell reception immediately |
| No-show with no call | Wasted | Yes at most centres | Contact your coordinator for next slot |
Did you know?
The radioactive tracer used in most PET-CT scans is manufactured that morning at a cyclotron facility and transported to the imaging centre under regulatory controls. By the end of a typical scanning session, the batch has decayed beyond clinical usefulness.
There is no way to hold it for a later appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Will I be charged if I miss my PET-CT appointment?
Possibly — it depends on how much notice you gave and the policy of the imaging centre handling your scan. If the tracer had already been prepared when you cancelled or did not show up, most centres will apply a tracer charge. If you called well before the appointment and the tracer had not yet been prepared, many centres will waive it. Ask about the cancellation policy when you book, so you know the terms before you need them.
Can the tracer be given to another patient if I cancel?
Not straightforwardly. The tracer is prepared to a specific activity level calculated for your weight and scan time. Giving it to another patient would require that person to be the right weight, available, fasted, and booked in the same narrow time window. In practice this almost never happens, which is why a last-minute cancellation usually means the tracer is wasted regardless of who else is waiting.
How much notice do I need to give to avoid a charge?
Policies vary between imaging centres, and CION can tell you what applies to your specific booking. As a general principle, the earlier you call the better. Giving notice the day before is more likely to mean the tracer has not yet been prepared. Calling on the morning of the scan is less certain. Ask the centre directly when you book rather than finding out at the moment it matters most.
How long will it take to get a new appointment?
It depends on the centre's schedule and how busy that period is. Do not assume it will be the following day — scanner slots and tracer orders both need to align. Your CION care coordinator can check availability across the partner imaging centres CION works with. Call as soon as you know you need to rebook rather than waiting until your missed slot has already passed.
I arrived at the centre but I was late. Will the scan still go ahead?
Tell reception immediately — do not wait to be called. Whether the scan can still proceed depends on how late you are and how much of the tracer's useful window remains. If you are only a short time late and the session has not moved on, there is a chance. The centre will give you a direct answer the moment you arrive. The worst outcome is to wait silently and miss the window entirely.
We travelled several hours to reach the centre and missed the slot. What can we do?
Call your CION care coordinator right away and explain what happened, including how far you travelled. They cannot override the imaging centre's tracer policy, but they can flag your case for priority rebooking and check whether any same-day capacity exists at CION partner centres in the area. For future appointments, mention your travel distance when booking — some centres can note this to allow a small arrival buffer.
