Is a PET-CT scan available in your district?
PET-CT is available through partner imaging centres in several districts across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. CION coordinates these scans as part of your treatment plan — you do not need to find a centre yourself.
Not every district has a centre yet. If one is not available close to you, your CION team will tell you where the nearest option is rather than leaving you to discover that on the day of the appointment.
The scan itself is not long. Most of the time is in the preparation — arriving, receiving the tracer, waiting for it to distribute through your body, then the scan. If you are travelling from a distant district, plan for at least half a day.
What should you sort out before your scan day?
- Confirm the centre addressPartner imaging centre addresses can change. Confirm the location with your CION team when the appointment is booked — not the morning of.
- Leave early enough for delaysA delayed arrival does not mean a delayed scan — it means a missed one. Build time into the journey for traffic, breakdowns, or any hold-up on the road.
- Follow fasting instructions exactlyYou will be asked not to eat for several hours before the scan. Eating beforehand means the scan cannot go ahead and you will need to rebook.
- Bring someone with youYou will not be able to drive after the scan. A family member or companion makes the return journey safer and removes one thing to worry about.
- Carry all previous reportsBring any earlier scans, biopsy results or blood reports. The radiologist needs your full picture to interpret the PET-CT correctly.
- Tell the team everything you are takingDeclare all medicines, supplements and Ayurvedic preparations to the imaging team before the scan. Some affect how the images read.

What are the trade-offs of scanning locally versus in Hyderabad?
A local centre means less travel — which matters enormously when you are managing side effects, when your family is taking time off work, or when the journey itself is exhausting. For most routine scans during treatment, the nearest centre is the right choice.
The one thing that is non-negotiable is the appointment time. The tracer used in a PET-CT has a very short effective life after preparation. It cannot be held for you. If you arrive late because of a long journey and miss your slot, you will need to rebook. This is the specific risk for families travelling from distant districts, and it is worth planning around well in advance.
Larger centres in Hyderabad may have more slots available and can sometimes accommodate urgent requests more quickly. If your oncologist needs a result fast to inform a treatment decision, ask whether the timing advantage of a city centre makes a difference in your situation.
Did you know?
The radioactive tracer used in a PET-CT scan — F-18 FDG — has a half-life of under two hours. Once prepared and administered, it cannot wait for a late arrival.
This is the one appointment in cancer care where arriving on time is genuinely non-negotiable, which is why planning the journey around the slot — not the other way around — is the safe approach for anyone travelling from a distant district.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find out if there is a PET-CT centre near my district?
Ask your CION care team when the scan is ordered. They will tell you which partner imaging centre is closest to your home and can book the appointment directly — you do not need to search independently. If no centre is nearby, they will tell you which location is the closest option and what to expect from the visit.
Will the scan result reach my oncologist if I scan at a partner centre?
Yes. CION coordinates the scan as part of your treatment plan, so the result comes back to your treating team. You do not need to carry reports from one place to another, though keeping a personal copy of any report is always sensible. Ask your team how results are shared and when to expect them after the scan.
Can I eat before a PET-CT scan?
No. You will be asked not to eat for several hours before the scan — your team will give you the specific window. Eating beforehand affects how the tracer distributes through your body, which means the images cannot be read correctly and the scan cannot go ahead. You would then need to rebook, which can delay your treatment plan. Follow the fasting instruction exactly.
How long will I be at the imaging centre?
Plan for several hours for the full visit. The scan itself is relatively quick for most patients, but preparation takes much longer — you arrive, receive the tracer injection, wait for it to distribute through the body, and then the scan begins. If you are coming from a distant district, do not book a return journey that leaves no margin for overruns at the centre.
What happens if I miss my scan slot?
You will need to rebook. The tracer is prepared for a specific appointment and cannot be held once the slot passes — this is different from a clinic visit where you can sometimes be seen a little late. Contact your CION team as soon as you know you cannot make it, even if that is on the day itself, so they can try to release the slot and get you rebooked as quickly as possible.
Does CION own the PET-CT imaging centres?
No. PET-CT is coordinated with partner imaging centres rather than centres owned by CION. Your scan is arranged as part of your treatment plan and your care team manages the booking. The quality and standards of the imaging are those of the partner facility. If you have questions about a specific centre before your appointment, ask your CION team directly.
