Value for Money vs Deep Detect: — Which PET-CT Should You Book?
Both PET-CT packages at CION use the same scanner and the same partner imaging centres. What changes between them is the experience of the specialist who reports your scan — and whether that difference matters depends on your clinical situation.
Medically reviewed by Dr. C. Raghavendra Reddy, Medical Oncologist, MBBS (Gold Medal) · DNB · DM (Medical Oncology, Gold Medal) · Last reviewed September 2026
- Same machine, different read — The scanner hardware and protocol are identical in both packages. The distinction is in who interprets what the scanner finds.
- Experience of the reporting doctor — Deep Detect routes your scan to a more senior nuclear medicine specialist, which matters most for complex or ambiguous cases.
- Most routine scans do not need it — For straightforward staging of a known cancer, Value for Money delivers the same clinical information at a lower cost.
- Your oncologist should decide — The right package depends on your clinical picture. Ask before booking rather than choosing on price alone.

Both packages use the same PET-CT scanner at the same partner imaging centres. What changes between Value for Money and Deep Detect is the experience of the specialist who reads and reports your scan. For most routine staging scans, either works well. For complex or ambiguous findings, the senior read in Deep Detect is worth the difference.
CION's PET-CT scans in Hyderabad start at Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Is the scan itself different?
No. Both packages use the same PET-CT scanner, the same radiotracer, and the same scanning protocol at CION's partner imaging centres.
The images produced are identical. What changes is who reviews those images and writes the report your oncologist uses to plan your treatment.
This is the distinction that matters clinically — and it is what determines the price difference between the two packages.

How to book a PET-CT at CION
Ask your oncologist which package fits your case
Your oncologist will tell you whether your clinical picture calls for a standard or senior read before you book. It is a quick question with a clear answer.
Contact the CION centre near you
The team will confirm the current price, available appointment slots, and which partner imaging centre your scan will take place at.
Confirm your preparation instructions
PET-CT requires fasting and your blood sugar to be within a safe range before the scan. Your team will give you specific instructions for the day before and the morning of your appointment.
Arrive with your referral and previous scan reports
Bring your oncologist's referral letter, your photo ID, and any previous imaging. Earlier scans help the reporting specialist give a more useful comparison.
Collect your report through your oncologist
Your oncologist receives the written report. Ask at booking how long the turnaround is, and who to contact if you have not heard back within that window.
Did you know?
PET-CT identifies cancer primarily by measuring how much glucose tumour cells consume, not by their shape or size alone. This metabolic signal is subtle — a small lesion in a difficult site may look the same whether it is active disease or a benign process.
A specialist who has read thousands of scans in a particular cancer type recognises those patterns more reliably. That is the clinical argument for a senior read when findings are not straightforward.

Frequently asked questions
Will my oncologist get the same information from both packages?
The images are identical — the scanner, the tracer, and the protocol are the same in both packages. For a straightforward scan of a known cancer in a typical site, the clinical information your oncologist receives is effectively the same. For ambiguous or unusual findings, a more experienced reporting specialist may interpret detail that a standard report would not draw out. Whether that distinction matters for your case is something your oncologist can tell you before you book.
Can I upgrade from Value for Money to Deep Detect after the scan is done?
Not for the same scan. The reporting choice is made at booking, and the images have already been read by the time you ask to upgrade. If you want a senior review after receiving a standard report, ask your oncologist whether requesting a formal re-read or a second specialist opinion is the right next step for your situation.
Does Aarogyasri or any government scheme cover either package?
Scheme coverage depends on the current empanelment status of the specific imaging centre and the procedure code being claimed. This changes and cannot be guaranteed in advance. Confirm at the time of booking which package the scheme covers and what documentation you need to bring. The team at the CION centre can check empanelment status for you before you commit to a date.
The price difference feels small — should I just always book Deep Detect?
Not necessarily. For a routine scan where the clinical picture is clear — staging a known cancer at a common site, or a scheduled response-assessment scan — the senior read adds cost without changing the clinical conclusion. The extra experience matters most when findings are genuinely complex or unexpected. Your oncologist is best placed to tell you which situation you are in, so ask before defaulting to the higher package.
My oncologist did not specify a package. Which should I book?
Call back and ask before booking. It is a quick question: 'Do you want a standard read or a senior specialist read for this scan?' Most oncologists will have a clear preference for your specific case once asked directly. Choosing on your own — either to save money or to spend more for reassurance — risks booking the wrong package for your clinical situation.
Does CION own the PET-CT scanners?
No. PET-CT is coordinated through partner imaging centres; CION does not own the scanners. CION manages the referral, preparation instructions, and oncology follow-up — the scan itself takes place at a partner facility. The scanner at partner centres is the same regardless of which package you choose, because both packages use the same equipment. The difference between packages lies entirely in the reporting specialist, not the machine.
