What Your PET-CT Quote — Does and Does Not Include
A PET-CT quote rarely tells you everything. The tracer, contrast agent, radiologist's report, and follow-up consultation may each be priced separately, and knowing which before you pay makes a real difference to what you budget.

- The tracer is usually included — FDG and most standard radiotracers are included in the quoted scan price — but confirm this when you book, as billing practices vary.
- Contrast may be extra — Some scan types require intravenous contrast for the CT component. It is not always part of the headline price.
- The consultation is separate — Your oncologist's appointment to explain the scan results is a clinical visit, billed separately from the scan fee.
- Ask for an itemised quote — A single quoted figure rarely tells the full story. Ask for a breakdown before you confirm your booking.

A PET-CT scan quote usually covers the scan and image acquisition. The radiotracer is typically included, but IV contrast, the written radiologist's report, and any oncologist's consultation to discuss results are often billed separately. Ask for an itemised list before you confirm your booking so there are no surprises on the day.

Is the oncologist's consultation included in the PET-CT price?
No. The appointment in which your oncologist explains the PET-CT findings to you is a clinical consultation. It is billed separately from the scan fee.
This is the item that catches people most off guard. The scan price may appear complete, and then a separate bill arrives for the appointment where the results were explained.
When you budget for your scan, include the follow-up consultation in your estimate. Ask your treating team at CION at the time of booking what to expect, so there are no surprises after the scan is done.
What happens on the day of your PET-CT scan?
Arrive prepared
You will have been given preparation instructions, usually including fasting and avoiding strenuous activity. Follow them exactly — arriving without having done so can mean your scan is postponed.
Tracer injection and waiting
A small amount of radiotracer is injected into a vein. You then rest quietly while it is absorbed. This waiting period is built into your appointment time, so plan for the full appointment block.
The scan
You lie on a flat table that passes slowly through the PET-CT scanner. The scan is painless. If contrast is required for your scan type, it is given through the same intravenous line before the CT portion begins.
Reporting
After you leave, a specialist radiologist reviews your images and writes an interpretive report. Reporting happens after your scan appointment and takes time before the report is issued.
Results appointment
Your treating oncologist reviews the radiologist's report with you at a follow-up appointment. This is a separate clinical consultation — billed independently of the scan — and is where the findings are explained.
CION does PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city — including an oncologist-reviewed report and a free Rs 950 consultation. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is the radiotracer included in the PET-CT price?
At most centres, yes — the radiotracer is included in the quoted scan price. It is the injected substance that makes PET imaging work, and it is one of the more expensive components of the procedure. Confirm this when you book, because billing practices vary. If your scan requires a specialist or non-standard tracer rather than the commonly used FDG, ask specifically, as those may be priced separately.
Is the CT contrast the same as the PET tracer?
No — they are two different substances. The PET tracer is a radioactive compound injected well before the scan begins; it is what the PET camera detects. The CT contrast is an iodine-based agent injected just before the CT portion of the scan to make certain structures easier to see on the image. Not every PET-CT scan requires contrast. If yours does, ask whether it is included in the quoted price or billed separately.
Does the quoted price include the written radiology report?
At most centres it does, but it is worth confirming. The radiologist's report is the formal written interpretation of what the scan shows, and it is the document your oncologist needs to guide your treatment. Some centres charge a separate reporting fee that is not in the initial scan quote. Ask at booking whether the report is included, and whether an express or urgent report carries an additional charge.
Will I be billed separately for the appointment to discuss my scan results?
Yes, in almost every case. The consultation in which your oncologist explains the findings to you is a clinical visit and is billed as one — it is not part of the scan price. This is the item that most often takes people by surprise. When you are working out the total cost of a PET-CT, add the follow-up consultation to your estimate and ask your treating team at CION what to expect before you book.
Can the quoted price change between booking and the day of my scan?
It can. Tracer costs are linked to supply and can change, and a quote given days or weeks before your scan may not match the amount charged on the day. Ask the imaging centre whether the quote is fixed, and get written confirmation if you need certainty. The figures on this page are indicative and current as of mid-2026 — confirm the exact price with your centre at the time of booking.
Does Aarogyasri or insurance cover the tracer and report as well as the scan?
Aarogyasri and most private insurance policies cover the scan up to a stated ceiling per procedure code. The tracer is usually included within that ceiling, but items such as IV contrast, a separate reporting fee, or consumables may or may not be covered depending on the scheme and how the bill is raised. Before your scan, check with your insurer or scheme coordinator which components are covered, whether pre-authorisation is required, and whether the total quoted amount falls within the approved ceiling. Out-of-pocket costs can arise even with coverage if the bill exceeds the scheme limit.
