What does a PET-CT scan cost, and what does the bill include?
| What to know | |
|---|---|
| Scan type | Your oncologist's referral will specify whole-body or regional. Whole-body scans and specialised tracers cost more than a standard regional scan using the FDG tracer. |
| What is included in the imaging bill | The radiopharmaceutical tracer, machine time, and radiologist's written report are billed together as one figure. |
| What is billed separately | The oncologist consultation that ordered the scan, any sedation if needed, and transport to and from the imaging centre are not part of the imaging bill. |
| Indicative cost (Sep 2026) | Request a written quote from the CION coordination team before confirming. Costs vary by scan type and centre. PET-CT in India costs substantially less than an equivalent scan in the UK, US, or Gulf. |
| GST | Medical diagnostic imaging is exempt from GST in India. Check that your proforma invoice reflects this before paying. |
| Payment from abroad | International bank transfer (SWIFT) is accepted. You will receive a proforma invoice — pay before the scan date and ask for a payment receipt by email. |
How do I book a PET-CT scan from abroad?
Get a referral letter from the treating oncologist
A PET-CT needs to be ordered by a doctor. If your parent has not yet seen an oncologist in India, CION can arrange a teleconsultation so the referral is in place before any scan is booked.
Contact the CION coordination team
Call or WhatsApp the helpline with your parent's referral letter. You can send documents by WhatsApp or email. You do not need to visit in person.
Receive and review the proforma invoice
Ask for a written quote specifying the scan type, tracer, and what is included. Check the total against the referral letter to confirm the scan matches what was ordered.
Pay by international bank transfer
Transfer the amount before the scan date. Ask for the payment receipt by email so you have a record. Confirm that the imaging centre has received the payment before your parent travels.
Your parent attends the scan
A family member, carer, or neighbour brings your parent to the imaging centre. Your parent will be given preparation instructions in advance — usually fasting and avoiding strenuous activity on the day.
Receive the report digitally
The written report is sent by email or WhatsApp, typically the same day or the next working day. Forward it to your oncologist in India and, if needed, to a specialist abroad for a second read.

Does someone need to be with your parent at the scan?
Your parent does not need a doctor or a medical professional to accompany them. A family member, a trusted neighbour, or a paid carer can bring them to the imaging centre and wait during the scan.
The scan is painless. Your parent will be asked to fast beforehand, to avoid strenuous exercise on the day, and to arrive at a fixed time so the tracer is injected at the right point in the process. The imaging centre will send these instructions directly to your parent or to a contact number you provide.
If your parent has diabetes, takes insulin, or has difficulty walking, tell the coordination team when you book. These situations are common and adjustments can usually be made.
Did you know?
Accredited PET-CT centres in India produce scan images and reports in the internationally standardised DICOM format — the same format used by hospitals in the UK, United States, and Australia.
This means an oncologist abroad can open and review the exact same images your team in India sees, with no conversion needed and no loss of diagnostic quality.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book the scan without being in India?
Yes. The CION coordination team takes bookings by phone, WhatsApp, and email. You send the referral letter digitally, confirm the scan type, receive a proforma invoice, pay by bank transfer, and your parent attends on the day. You do not need to be in India at any point in this process.
How do I pay for the scan from the UK, US or Gulf?
International bank transfer (SWIFT) is the standard method. When you confirm the booking, ask for the bank details and a proforma invoice with the scan type and total clearly listed. Transfer before the scan date and ask for an email receipt. If a family member in India can pay on your behalf, that is also straightforward — the booking is in your parent's name regardless of who pays.
Does my parent need a referral letter before the scan?
Yes. A PET-CT is a diagnostic investigation that must be ordered by a doctor. If your parent does not yet have a treating oncologist, CION can arrange a teleconsultation — the doctor reviews your parent's existing reports by video or phone, orders the appropriate scan, and the referral is in place before you book. This step also ensures the right type of scan is ordered for your parent's situation.
How long does it take to get the report after the scan?
The written radiologist's report is typically ready the same day or the next working day. It is sent digitally — by email or WhatsApp — to the contact details you provided at booking. If you need the report urgently, say so when you book rather than after the scan; most centres can prioritise the read when given advance notice.
Can I speak to a doctor about the results from abroad?
Yes. Once you have the report, you can request a teleconsultation with the CION oncologist who ordered the scan, or with any CION specialist. These consultations happen by video or phone. If a specialist abroad also needs to review the scan images, ask the imaging centre for the DICOM files — the raw image data — which can be shared electronically to any radiologist or oncologist worldwide.
What if my parent has diabetes or takes insulin?
Tell the coordination team before you confirm the booking. A standard PET-CT requires fasting, and the preparation protocol must be adjusted for patients who take insulin or have blood sugar that is not well controlled, because glucose levels affect how the tracer distributes through the body. The imaging centre will give specific instructions once they know your parent's situation. This is a common request and does not prevent the scan — it changes the preparation.
