PET-CT for Heart, Brain and Infection: — Does the Price Change?
You may assume PET-CT is only for cancer. It is used just as regularly for heart disease, unexplained infection, and neurological conditions — and for most of those, the scan and the price are the same.
Medically reviewed by Dr. C. Raghavendra Reddy, Medical Oncologist, MBBS (Gold Medal) · DNB · DM (Medical Oncology, Gold Medal) · Last reviewed September 2026
- Same scan, usually same price — Standard FDG PET-CT costs in the same range regardless of whether it is ordered for cancer, infection, or a brain or heart condition.
- Cardiac perfusion PET is different — It uses a different tracer and is priced separately from a standard FDG scan.
- Insurance covers it without a cancer diagnosis — Most Indian health insurance policies pay for PET-CT when a specialist refers you with a documented clinical reason.
- Pre-authorisation is essential — Your insurer must approve the scan in writing before you book it. Approval after the fact is rarely granted.

PET-CT for heart, brain, or hidden infection usually costs the same as an oncology scan — the same FDG tracer and scanner are used. Cardiac perfusion PET uses a different tracer and is priced separately. Most Indian health insurance policies cover PET-CT when a specialist refers you with a documented clinical reason.
CION's PET-CT scans in Hyderabad start at Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

How do you arrange a non-cancer PET-CT?
Get a referral from your specialist
Your cardiologist, neurologist, rheumatologist, or infectious disease specialist writes a referral letter stating why PET-CT is clinically needed. Most insurers and partner imaging centres require a specialist referral for PET-CT, not a GP letter alone.
Get pre-authorisation from your insurer before booking
Send your specialist's referral and recent test results to your insurer. Insurers will not reimburse a scan booked without written prior approval — getting this step out of order is the most common reason claims are declined.
Come to a CION centre with your documents
Bring your referral letter, pre-authorisation approval, and all previous scan reports. The care team confirms the right scan type for your condition and arranges the booking at a partner imaging centre.
Attend the partner imaging centre on scan day
You will be given the address, time, and written preparation instructions in advance. Follow them carefully. If you have diabetes or take medicines that could affect the scan, the imaging team will send you specific guidance when the appointment is confirmed.
Collect your report through your referring doctor
The report is sent to your referring doctor, usually within one to two working days of the scan. Your doctor discusses the result with you in the context of your full clinical picture.
Which scan is used for which condition?
| Condition | First-line investigation | When PET-CT is added |
|---|---|---|
| Heart muscle viability | Echocardiogram | When a cardiologist needs to confirm which muscle areas are still alive before bypass or stent surgery |
| Reduced heart blood flow | Stress echocardiogram or nuclear stress test | Cardiac perfusion PET when earlier tests are inconclusive or technically limited |
| Memory loss or cognitive decline | MRI brain | FDG PET-CT when MRI findings are unclear; amyloid PET when Alzheimer's confirmation is needed for treatment decisions |
| Epilepsy — seizure localisation | MRI brain and EEG | FDG PET-CT when surgery is being considered and the seizure focus cannot be confirmed on MRI or EEG alone |
| Fever of unknown origin | Blood cultures and CT | FDG PET-CT to locate hidden infection or inflammation in a single whole-body scan when other tests have been inconclusive |
| Large vessel vasculitis | CT angiogram | FDG PET-CT to confirm active vessel wall inflammation and assess how far it extends |

Is PET-CT for non-cancer conditions covered by insurance in India?
Most Indian private health insurance policies cover PET-CT when a specialist has recommended it and the clinical reason is in writing. The insurer does not require a cancer diagnosis — it requires a documented justification from your specialist for why the scan is clinically needed.
Pre-authorisation is almost always required. Contact your insurer before booking the scan. Without written prior approval, a policy that would otherwise have covered the cost typically declines the claim.
Government schemes including Aarogyasri and PM-JAY cover PET-CT for specified indications, up to a defined ceiling amount. If the scan at the partner imaging centre costs more than that ceiling, you pay the difference. Ask at the CION centre which government schemes apply to your situation before you book.
What do you need for your PET-CT appointment?
- Referral letter from your specialist, clearly stating the clinical reason for PET-CT
- Insurance card and written pre-authorisation approval from your insurer
- All previous relevant scan reports — MRI, CT, echocardiogram, or nuclear stress test
- A list of all your current medicines, including ayurvedic, herbal, or over-the-counter preparations
- Your most recent blood sugar reading if you have diabetes
- A family member or friend to accompany you, especially if you will be fasting before the scan
Did you know?
A single whole-body FDG PET-CT can locate a hidden infection or source of inflammation that blood cultures, CT, and MRI have each failed to find.
EANM guidelines recommend FDG PET-CT as the preferred investigation for fever of unknown origin when standard tests have been inconclusive.

CION does PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city — including an oncologist-reviewed report and a free Rs 950 consultation. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is PET-CT for a heart or brain condition the same scan as for cancer?
For most indications, yes. The scanner, the preparation, and the FDG tracer are identical. What changes is what the radiologist is looking for when reading the images. Cardiac perfusion PET — which measures blood flow to heart muscle — uses a different tracer, rubidium-82 or N-13 ammonia, and is a different procedure with different pricing. Standard heart viability PET and brain FDG PET use exactly the same scan as oncology.
Does my insurer need a cancer diagnosis to pay for PET-CT?
No. Most Indian health insurance policies cover PET-CT based on medical necessity, not on the diagnosis. What the insurer needs is a specialist's written referral explaining why the scan is clinically required — not confirmation of the condition it will find. The same policy that covers PET-CT for cancer staging will generally cover it for fever of unknown origin, epilepsy, or heart disease if the referral documents the reason clearly.
How long does pre-authorisation take?
Most private insurers turn around pre-authorisation requests within a few working days. Bring your referral letter, your most recent test results, and your policy details when you apply. If the insurer requests additional information from your specialist, responding quickly is the most important thing you can do to avoid delay. Do not book the scan while waiting for approval — book only after you have the written confirmation in hand.
Do I need to fast before a non-cancer PET-CT?
For any scan using the FDG tracer — including heart viability, brain, and infection PET-CT — you will be asked to fast before the scan. Your imaging team will give you written preparation instructions with the exact requirements. Diabetic patients receive different instructions, which may involve adjusting the timing of insulin or oral medication. Tell the imaging team you have diabetes when the appointment is confirmed, not on scan day.
Can Aarogyasri or a government scheme cover PET-CT for a heart or brain condition?
Aarogyasri and PM-JAY cover PET-CT for specified medical indications at empanelled centres, with a fixed ceiling amount. Whether your condition is on the covered list and whether the partner imaging centre is empanelled under your scheme are both things to confirm at the CION centre before you book. If the scan cost exceeds the scheme ceiling, you pay the difference. Bring your scheme card and specialist referral to the appointment.
What if I specifically need cardiac perfusion PET — is it available?
Cardiac perfusion PET requires rubidium-82 or N-13 ammonia, tracers that need specialist equipment not available at every imaging centre. Availability at CION partner centres varies by location. If your cardiologist has specifically asked for perfusion PET rather than standard FDG cardiac PET, say so when you contact the CION centre — the team will confirm whether it can be arranged at a partner centre near you and advise on the next step.
