PET-CT, CT, MRI and Bone Scan — Cost Compared in Hyderabad
PET-CT costs more than a CT or MRI — and is ordered for a reason a cheaper scan cannot replicate. This page puts the indicative prices side by side and explains which test answers which question.

- Price follows purpose — PET-CT shows where cancer cells are metabolically active. CT and MRI show structure and size. Different questions, different costs.
- Cheaper is not always enough — If your oncologist has asked for a PET-CT, a CT or MRI at a lower price does not give the same information.
- Costs vary across centres — Indicative ranges in Hyderabad can differ by several thousand rupees between facilities for the same scan type.
- Schemes may cover PET-CT — Aarogyasri and some insurance plans cover PET-CT for certain cancers. Ask your centre before paying out of pocket.

PET-CT typically costs more than CT or MRI in Hyderabad, and is ordered for different reasons. A cheaper scan is not a substitute if your oncologist has asked for a PET-CT — each test answers a different question. The right scan is whichever one your team needs to make the next treatment decision accurately.
CION offers PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Which scan is right for what?
| Scan | What it shows best | When oncologists choose it | Less appropriate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| PET-CT | Where cancer cells are metabolically active across the whole body | Staging, restaging, checking response to treatment | Pregnancy; uncontrolled blood sugar; detailed brain imaging needed |
| CT scan | Structure and size of organs, lymph nodes, and tumours | Monitoring known disease, surgical planning, urgent assessment | Precise soft-tissue detail needed; cumulative radiation dose a concern |
| MRI | Soft-tissue contrast — brain, spine, liver, pelvis | Brain metastases, prostate, rectal or liver lesions | Metal implants in some cases; patient unable to hold still for the scan |
| Bone scan | Sites of bone involvement across the whole skeleton | Breast and prostate cancer bone surveillance | Metabolically active bone sites already shown on a recent PET-CT |

What to check before you book any scan
- Get the request in writing — your oncologist should specify the exact scan type, body region, and whether contrast is needed.
- Call your insurer or scheme office before booking — some scans need prior authorisation or are only covered at empanelled centres.
- Ask whether Aarogyasri or your policy covers this specific scan — coverage limits and approved centres vary.
- Confirm the centre holds nuclear medicine accreditation if you are having a PET-CT or bone scan.
- Ask for a written cost estimate before your appointment so there are no surprises on the day.
- Tell your care team if cost is a concern before choosing a centre — they may know of scheme-covered options.
Is the cheaper scan good enough?
The cheaper scan is good enough when it answers the question your oncologist is asking — and not good enough when it does not.
CT and MRI show structure: the size of a tumour, whether lymph nodes look enlarged, whether an organ appears normal. PET-CT shows metabolic activity — which areas of the body contain cells consuming glucose at a rate that signals cancer. These are different questions, and neither scan answers the other one.
If your oncologist has specifically requested a PET-CT and you have a CT done instead to save money, the staging picture is incomplete. Repeating the imaging later, or revising a treatment plan built on incomplete information, typically costs more than doing the right test first.
How does CION coordinate PET-CT scans?
CION coordinates PET-CT through partner imaging centres across the network. Your oncologist's team will confirm which centre to attend and what preparation is required — typically a period of fasting and avoiding strenuous activity before the scan.
CION does not own the imaging centres and does not set their prices. Your care team can, however, help you understand what is covered under any scheme you are enrolled in and provide the referral letter the centre will need.
Bring your oncologist's written request and your insurance or scheme card on the day. If you are unsure what documents or preparation your scan requires, call the centre the morning before to confirm.
PET-CT at CION starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — across 4 partner centres in Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Himayatnagar and Narayanaguda. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Why does PET-CT cost so much more than a CT scan?
PET-CT costs more because it uses a radioactive tracer — most commonly FDG, a form of glucose — that has to be produced at a licensed facility, transported under strict conditions, and injected on the day of your scan. The tracer has a very short shelf life, which adds significantly to the cost. The machine itself combines a PET scanner with a CT scanner and requires staff with specialist nuclear medicine training. A standard CT scanner uses no tracer and is less complex to run, which is why the price difference is substantial.
Can I use Aarogyasri or another government scheme to pay for a PET-CT?
Aarogyasri covers PET-CT for certain cancers under specific procedure codes, but coverage depends on your diagnosis, the stage of disease, and whether the centre is empanelled under the scheme. The same applies to other state and central government health programmes. Do not assume coverage — call the scheme helpline or ask your oncologist's team to confirm before booking, so you are not left with an unexpected bill on the day.
My oncologist asked for both a CT and a PET-CT. Do I really need both?
Occasionally, yes. For some decisions — surgical planning, for example — the structural detail of a dedicated CT matters separately from what the PET component shows. In many cases, a PET-CT already includes a CT component, so the two requests refer to the same combined scan rather than two separate ones. Ask your oncologist's team to clarify exactly what has been ordered, and whether it is one scan or two, before you book anything.
Is there a quality difference between a cheaper and a more expensive PET-CT?
Machine quality and imaging software do vary between facilities, and this can matter for detecting small lesions. A more reliable indicator than price is whether the centre is licensed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board for nuclear medicine. If your oncologist has recommended a specific facility, ask why — they will often have a reason based on image quality, reporting turnaround, or the radiologist's familiarity with oncology cases, rather than price alone.
How long is the wait for a PET-CT appointment in Hyderabad?
Wait times vary by facility. Some centres offer appointments within a few days; others have longer queues. If your oncologist's team has said the scan is time-sensitive — for example, before a treatment decision is due — mention this when you call to book. Partner imaging centres coordinated through CION are familiar with oncology timelines and can often accommodate requests that need to move quickly.
Can I call different centres and compare prices before booking?
You can, and asking for a written quote before committing is reasonable. Prices for the same scan can vary meaningfully across Hyderabad. That said, use the centre your oncologist's team has recommended where possible — the choice is usually based on image quality, reporting standards, and radiologist experience, not only proximity or cost. If cost is a significant concern, raise it with your care team first rather than choosing on price alone; they may know of scheme-covered options you have not yet explored.
