Getting a PET-CT Scan — at a Government Hospital in Telangana

Government hospitals in Telangana do offer PET-CT scanning, and for patients with an Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat card the cost can be very low or nothing at all. The honest part is the wait. Knowing what to expect — and when a faster route is the right call — is what this page is for.

  • Available but in demand — Government PET-CT exists in Hyderabad, but scanners serve many patients and waiting times are typically weeks to months.
  • Documents matter — You need a written referral from your oncologist, identity proof, and your Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat card if you have one.
  • Apply in person — Most government nuclear medicine departments do not take phone bookings for PET-CT. You register at the desk in person.
  • If time is short — If your oncologist says the scan is urgent for treatment planning, ask about a partner imaging centre — appointments are usually available within days.

Government hospitals in Telangana offer PET-CT at subsidised or no cost for eligible patients, primarily at MNJ Institute of Oncology and NIMS in Hyderabad. The waiting time is the real consideration: demand is high and waits of several weeks to a few months are common. Apply in person at the nuclear medicine department with a referral from your oncologist.

CION does PET-CT in Hyderabad from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in the city, with no hidden charges. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

How do you apply for a government PET-CT scan?

  • Get a written referral from your oncologistThe letter should state your diagnosis and explain why a PET-CT is needed. Most government nuclear medicine departments will not register you without one.
  • Gather your identity and medical documentsBring your Aadhaar card, cancer diagnosis report, biopsy result, and any previous scan reports. Incomplete documents usually mean a second visit.
  • Bring your Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat card if you have oneAt designated government facilities these schemes can cover part or all of the PET-CT cost. Confirm your eligibility when you register at the desk.
  • Go to the nuclear medicine or radiology department in personMost centres do not accept phone bookings for PET-CT. Visit the department on a working day, ideally early in the morning.
  • Ask for your appointment date in writingGet a written appointment slip and keep it safe. You will need it to confirm your slot and to show at the department entrance on scan day.
  • Come fasting on the day of the scanYou will be asked not to eat for several hours before the scan. Water is usually permitted. Your registration letter will give the exact instructions for your appointment.

How long is the wait for a government PET-CT in Telangana?

Waits of several weeks are common, and a wait of one to two months is not unusual at the busiest centres. PET-CT scanners in the government system are shared across many cancer types and many patients, and the machines require specialist maintenance that limits available slots.

Cancer staging scans may receive some priority over routine follow-up scans, but this depends on each centre's triage process and is not guaranteed. Tell the registration desk clearly what you are waiting for and why, so the right information is on your file.

If your oncologist has said the scan is needed before your next treatment decision, tell them the waiting time you were given. They can advise whether waiting is clinically safe for your situation or whether a faster route makes more sense.

Did you know?

NCCN, ASCO and ESMO treatment guidelines build the entire treatment sequence — surgery dates, radiotherapy planning, chemotherapy regimens — on the staging scan result.

For cancers where PET-CT is the recommended staging tool, a delayed scan is a delayed treatment start, not just a delayed administrative step.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is PET-CT free at government hospitals in Telangana?

For patients enrolled in the Aarogyasri Health Care Trust or the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme, PET-CT at designated government facilities may be fully or largely covered. If you are not enrolled in either scheme, a subsidised fee usually applies rather than a full private-market rate. The exact amount depends on the hospital and your enrolment status, so confirm at the registration desk when you apply. Bring your scheme card on the day you register.

Which government hospitals in Hyderabad have a PET-CT scanner?

MNJ Institute of Oncology in Red Hills, Hyderabad, is the state cancer hospital and the most commonly referred government facility for oncology PET-CT in Telangana. Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences also has nuclear medicine capabilities. Equipment availability and working hours can change, so call the nuclear medicine department directly before travelling. Your oncologist's referral letter will usually name the facility they are sending you to.

How long will I wait for a government PET-CT in Telangana?

A wait of several weeks is typical, and a wait of one to two months is not unusual at the busiest centres. Waits vary by centre, by the urgency of your clinical situation, and by how many scans are already scheduled on the machine. There is no way to get an accurate waiting time without visiting or calling the nuclear medicine department directly. If your treating oncologist says the scan is urgent, make that clear to the department when you register.

Can I get a government PET-CT if I live outside Hyderabad?

Government PET-CT is currently concentrated in Hyderabad at facilities such as MNJ and NIMS. If you live in a district without access, you would generally need to travel to Hyderabad for the scan. Your oncologist or district hospital can issue the referral to the appropriate facility. If travel and accommodation add significant cost and difficulty, ask your oncologist whether a CION partner imaging centre closer to your home is worth considering alongside the cost of travel.

What documents do I need to bring when I apply?

Bring your Aadhaar card or other government identity proof, a written referral from your treating oncologist, your cancer diagnosis report and biopsy result, any previous scan or imaging reports, and your Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat card if you have one. Missing any of these usually means being asked to return another day. Prepare everything before you travel to the hospital, and make photocopies to leave at the registration desk if asked.

My oncologist says I need the PET-CT urgently — what should I do?

Tell your oncologist the government waiting time you were given and ask directly whether that wait is clinically safe for your situation. If the wait would delay a treatment decision, they may refer you to a partner imaging centre where an appointment is usually available within a few days. At CION, PET-CT scans are coordinated through partner imaging centres and the booking is managed through your treating team — you do not need to arrange it yourself.
