Patients from Khammam typically reach Hyderabad in around four hours by road or train — indicative times only. A same-day trip is feasible if your slot is in the morning. If you are using Aarogyasri, collect your pre-authorisation letter from the referring government hospital before you leave Khammam.
At CION, a whole-body PET-CT starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
Is a same-day trip from Khammam realistic for a PET-CT?
Yes — for a morning slot. Khammam is around four hours from Hyderabad by road or train, so leaving by 5 or 6 am gives you a margin for an early appointment. These are indicative times; allow extra margin during festival periods or if you are unfamiliar with the route.
A PET-CT typically takes two to three hours from when you arrive, including preparation, the injection wait, and the scan itself. A morning slot means you can be on your way back to Khammam by early afternoon.
You will be fasting before the scan. Carry a packed meal and water to have once the scan is done — the return journey takes as long as the outward one, and your body will need fuel.

- Any medicines you take daily — check with your team whether to take them before or after the scan

How does Aarogyasri work for PET-CT from Khammam?
Aarogyasri, Telangana's state health scheme, covers a range of cancer diagnostic procedures including PET-CT at empanelled centres, depending on your diagnosis. Coverage is not automatic — it depends on your specific condition and whether the procedure is listed under it.
The process starts at a government hospital in Khammam. Your treating doctor there initiates the pre-authorisation request. Once approved, you receive a letter that must travel with you to Hyderabad.
Without that letter, the empanelled centre cannot process your scan under Aarogyasri, and you would be asked to pay privately on the day. Before you travel, confirm both that your procedure is covered and that the centre you are going to is currently empanelled under the scheme.
Did you know?
PET-CT is recommended by NCCN and ESMO guidelines for staging lymphoma, lung cancer, and head and neck cancers because it shows the metabolic activity of disease — not just its size and location. For patients travelling from Khammam, the scan can often resolve staging in a single trip.
Bring all previous imaging and biopsy reports to your appointment. Earlier scans give the radiologist a baseline to compare against, and that comparison is often as important as the new images.

Frequently asked questions
What time should we leave Khammam to make a morning PET-CT slot?
With around four hours of indicative travel time, leaving by 5 to 6 am gives you a reasonable margin for a morning slot. When you book, tell the imaging centre you are travelling from Khammam the same day and ask whether your slot time is suitable. A centre that knows you are travelling will try to schedule you as early as possible.
Does Aarogyasri cover PET-CT for cancer patients from Khammam?
Aarogyasri covers PET-CT at empanelled centres for a number of cancer diagnoses, but coverage is specific to your condition and the procedures listed under it — it is not automatic for all cancers. The government hospital in Khammam that referred you will initiate the pre-authorisation request. Before you travel, confirm that your procedure is listed and that the centre you are going to is currently empanelled under the scheme.
Do I need to fast before a PET-CT, and for how long?
Yes. A PET-CT uses a glucose-based tracer, and eating beforehand interferes with the result. Your team will confirm the exact fasting duration. If you have diabetes or are on insulin, you need specific preparation instructions — tell your team before the appointment. Carry food to eat immediately after the scan; do not make the return journey to Khammam on an empty stomach.
Is there a PET-CT centre in Khammam itself?
PET-CT requires specialist equipment that is not yet available at most district-level centres in Telangana. Patients from Khammam travel to Hyderabad for the scan. CION coordinates PET-CT through partner imaging centres, and your treating team will refer you to the right centre and help you plan around the travel. If the journey is difficult, discuss this with your oncologist — the reason for the scan sometimes affects whether an alternative imaging approach is possible.
Can we get the PET-CT report the same day so we do not need to return?
Preliminary images are available shortly after the scan, but the formal radiologist's report usually takes one to two working days. For patients travelling from Khammam, most centres send the report digitally to your treating oncologist so you do not need a second journey to collect it. Confirm this arrangement when you book — ask specifically whether the report will be sent to your doctor digitally and when to expect it.
What if our Aarogyasri pre-authorisation has not come through before we travel?
Do not travel for the scan without the pre-authorisation letter if you are relying on Aarogyasri to cover the cost. The imaging centre cannot process the claim without it, and you would be asked to pay privately on the day. If there is a delay, follow up with the government hospital in Khammam that initiated the process. Ask them for a clear timeline in writing, and only book your travel once the letter is confirmed.
