How do you choose which centre to go to?

  • Pick the centre nearest to where you will be staying on scan day — you will have fasted and may be tired by the time you leave.
  • Ask your coordinator which centre has the earliest available slot, if the date matters more than the location.
  • Bring any previous scan reports, your referral letter, and a list of your current medicines.
  • Fast as your team instructs — the exact duration will be confirmed when the appointment is arranged.
  • If you are diabetic, tell your CION team before scan day for specific guidance on food and medicines.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with no metal zips or fastenings. Leave jewellery at home.

How does CION arrange your PET-CT scan?

Your CION oncologist writes the referral and your care coordinator books the appointment at the partner imaging centre nearest to you.

The scan report is sent directly to your oncologist, so you do not need to collect a CD or carry results to your next appointment. Routine reports are reviewed at your next scheduled visit; if a finding needs to be acted on sooner, your team will contact you.

If you have difficulty travelling to any of the four locations, tell your coordinator before the appointment is booked.

Does it matter which of the four centres you go to?

For the scan result itself, no. All four are partner facilities whose reports are reviewed by your CION oncologist in the context of your full treatment history.

What does matter is how far you travel on scan day. A PET-CT appointment takes a couple of hours from arrival to leaving, and you will have fasted. The nearer the centre, the easier the day.

If you have had a previous PET-CT at one of the four centres, your CION team can request the earlier scan for comparison. Mention this when your appointment is being arranged.

Did you know?

A single whole-body PET-CT scan shows both where a tumour sits anatomically and how metabolically active it is — two pieces of information that previously required separate investigations on different days.

ASCO and ESMO guidelines describe PET-CT as the standard staging investigation for several cancers because, in a meaningful proportion of patients, it changes the recommended treatment plan compared with CT imaging alone.

A whole-body PET-CT at CION is Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — with a free Rs 950 oncologist consultation to talk through your report. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a PET-CT scan at one of the CION partner centres?

You do not book it yourself. Once your CION oncologist refers you for a PET-CT, your care coordinator contacts the partner imaging centre and arranges the appointment. You will be told which centre, the date, the time, and what you need to do to prepare. If the offered date does not suit you, or if a different location would be more practical, tell your coordinator before the appointment is confirmed.

What preparation do I need to do before a PET-CT scan?

Your CION team will give you preparation instructions specific to your situation. In general, PET-CT requires fasting beforehand and avoiding strenuous activity in the hours before the scan. Diabetic patients need specific guidance on food and medicines on scan day, so raise this with your team before the appointment rather than on the day. Wear loose clothing with no metal fastenings, and leave jewellery at home.

How long does a PET-CT scan take?

Plan for approximately two to three hours at the imaging centre from arrival to leaving. Most of that time is the waiting period after the tracer injection, which allows it to distribute through your body before the scan begins. The time inside the scanner itself is shorter. Your coordinator will confirm the expected duration when the appointment is booked.

Is the radioactive tracer used in a PET scan safe?

The tracer contains a small amount of radioactive material. The radiation dose is considered acceptable for diagnostic purposes by national and international radiation safety bodies. The tracer clears from your body within hours. The imaging centre will give you instructions about avoiding prolonged close contact with young children or pregnant women for a short period after your scan. Follow whatever guidance they provide.

Will I get my scan report on the same day?

Usually not on the same day. The images are reviewed by a radiologist and the report is sent to your CION oncologist, who interprets the findings alongside your other results and treatment history. Routine reports are discussed at your next scheduled appointment. If the findings need to be acted on urgently, your oncologist or care coordinator will contact you before that visit.

Can I use a previous PET-CT scan done at a different centre for comparison?

Yes, and comparison with a prior scan is one of the most useful tools for assessing whether treatment is working. If you have had an earlier PET-CT done outside the CION network, bring the CD or digital copy to your oncologist. If it was done at one of the four CION partner centres, your team can often arrange for it to be retrieved directly. Mention the earlier scan when your appointment is being arranged so this can be planned for.
