Free and Subsidised PET-CT: — Government Options and Real Waiting Times
Free PET-CT is available in Hyderabad through government schemes and hospitals. The wait is real — often several weeks — and knowing that in advance helps you plan your treatment timeline without surprises.
Medically reviewed by Dr. T. Raghavender Reddy, Medical Oncologist, MBBS · DM (Medical Oncology) · MD (Radiation Oncology) · Last reviewed September 2026
- Two schemes cover it — Aarogyasri (Telangana) and Ayushman Bharat cover PET-CT for eligible cancer patients at empanelled centres.
- Government hospitals have the scanner — MNJ Institute of Oncology and NIMS in Hyderabad are government centres where scheme-covered scans are done.
- Wait times are real — Demand at government centres is high. A wait of several weeks from referral is common and worth planning around.
- Delay matters for some situations — not all — Your oncologist needs to know how long the wait is before you join the queue, not after the appointment is booked.

Where in Hyderabad can you get a scheme-covered PET-CT scan?
MNJ Institute of Oncology (King Koti, Hyderabad) is the primary government cancer hospital in the city and is empanelled under Aarogyasri and PMJAY. NIMS — Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences — is also a government centre where pre-authorised scans can be done.
Empanelment lists change. Before you travel, confirm with the Aarogyasri Trust helpline or the PMJAY portal that your chosen centre is currently empanelled and accepting PET-CT pre-authorisation requests.
If you are being treated at a private hospital, your oncologist can apply for scheme pre-authorisation at a private PET-CT centre that is also empanelled. You do not have to transfer your care to a government hospital to use either scheme.

How do you get pre-authorisation for a free PET-CT scan?
Confirm your card and eligibility
You need a valid Aarogyasri card (Telangana) or a PMJAY card linked to your Aadhaar. If you do not yet have one, contact the Aarogyasri Trust helpline or your hospital's scheme desk — they can guide you through enrolment.
Get a written clinical referral
The pre-authorisation request requires a referral letter from your oncologist stating the clinical indication — initial staging, response assessment, or suspected recurrence. The specific reason matters for approval.
Your hospital submits the pre-authorisation
The request is submitted through the Aarogyasri or PMJAY portal by your treating hospital's scheme desk or medical social worker. You do not need to do this yourself, but make sure someone has actually submitted it — ask for confirmation.
Wait for approval
Pre-authorisation is usually granted within a few working days once the request is submitted correctly and completely. If it is taking longer, ask your medical social worker to follow up with the scheme authority.
Book the scan appointment
Once approved, the appointment is booked at the empanelled centre. At busy government hospitals, this is where most of the wait sits — approval can be quick, but scanner availability is the bottleneck.
Attend the scan and collect your report
Bring your scheme card, your pre-authorisation letter, and the referral when you go. PET-CT reports are usually ready within one to two working days — confirm the turnaround time with the centre when you book.
Does waiting several weeks for the scan affect your treatment?
For most routine follow-up scans in stable disease, a wait of several weeks does not change your outcome. For initial staging before treatment starts, a longer wait can push back when chemotherapy or radiotherapy begins — and that is a conversation to have with your oncologist before you join the queue, not after.
If your doctor referred you urgently — to confirm a suspected recurrence, or because a treatment decision is waiting on this scan — tell them the expected wait time at the government centre. There may be an option to fast-track through a private empanelled centre under the same scheme, or to explore a hospital waiver if timing is critical.
The one thing not to do is join the queue and assume your oncologist knows how long the wait is. A wait that turns out to be five or six weeks needs to be planned around, and that planning only happens if your team has the information.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Aarogyasri if I am being treated at a private hospital?
Yes. Aarogyasri pre-authorisation can be applied for at empanelled private centres, not only at government hospitals. Your oncologist at the private hospital applies through the scheme portal, and the scan is done at an empanelled private PET-CT centre near you. You do not need to change your treating hospital to access the scheme. Confirm with your hospital's medical social worker that the imaging centre your oncologist has in mind is currently empanelled before assuming it is covered.
What documents do I need for Aarogyasri PET-CT pre-authorisation?
You will typically need your Aarogyasri card, your Aadhaar, your oncologist's referral letter with the clinical indication, and relevant recent investigations such as biopsy reports or earlier scans. The hospital scheme desk prepares the submission package — ask them what they need from you specifically, as document requirements can change when the scheme is updated. Do not rely on a list from elsewhere.
What if I do not have an Aarogyasri or PMJAY card?
Enrolment for Aarogyasri is done through Mee Seva centres and the Aarogyasri Trust. PMJAY enrolment is linked to the Socio-Economic Caste Census and your Aadhaar. Your hospital's social work department can walk you through the process. If your treatment is urgent and enrolment will take time, tell your oncologist — they can advise on interim options rather than having you wait twice: once for the card and once for the scan.
Is the scan quality the same at government hospitals as at private centres?
Equipment and radiopharmaceuticals at accredited government centres — including MNJ and NIMS — meet the same regulatory standards as accredited private centres. What can vary is the experience on the day: appointment management, waiting area comfort, and report turnaround time. The clinical interpretation is done by qualified nuclear medicine specialists at both. If the images will be used for a second opinion or an international consultation, confirm before your appointment that the centre can give you the images in standard DICOM format.
My chemotherapy start date depends on this scan. Is it safe to wait several weeks?
Tell your oncologist that directly. When a treatment decision is waiting on a scan result, most oncologists will tell you how long a wait is clinically acceptable in your situation. If the government centre queue is longer than that, they may apply for scheme pre-authorisation at a faster private empanelled centre, or explore a hospital waiver. The important thing is that this conversation happens before you join the queue, not after you discover the appointment is weeks away.
Can CION help with Aarogyasri or PMJAY pre-authorisation for PET-CT?
Yes. CION's medical social workers can support the pre-authorisation process at CION centres empanelled under Aarogyasri and PMJAY. PET-CT at CION is coordinated through partner imaging centres; your care team can advise whether a scheme-covered scan can be arranged at a nearby empanelled partner, or whether the government hospital route is more practical for your situation. Ask at your next appointment which option gives you the shorter wait.
