PET-CT Without — a Doctor's Referral
You do not need a prescription to book a PET-CT at CION partner imaging centres. But a scan without a clinical question often produces a report you cannot act on alone. This page explains what walk-in booking involves and when a consultation first makes the difference.

- Walk-ins are accepted — No referral is required to book a PET-CT at CION partner imaging centres.
- The report describes findings — Without a treating doctor, interpreting what those findings mean for you is difficult.
- A clinical question changes everything — A scan guided by a specific question gives the radiologist context that makes the report useful.
- Tracer timing is fixed — Once you are injected with the radioactive tracer, your appointment slot cannot move — plan your travel carefully.

PET-CT scans can be booked at CION partner imaging centres without a doctor's referral. Walk-ins and self-referrals are accepted. However, a scan without a clear clinical question is rarely useful: a radiologist's report describes what is visible, not whether it is significant for you. A consultation before scanning helps you get an answer, not just an image.
A whole-body PET-CT at CION costs from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad. Indicative price, as of September 2026.
With a referral versus without one: what actually changes?
| With a doctor's referral | Self-referral (no prescription) | |
|---|---|---|
| Why you are scanning | A specific clinical question guides what the radiologist looks for | No clinical context — findings may be hard to interpret |
| Who reviews the report | Your treating doctor contextualises the findings for your case | You receive the report directly, without clinical guidance |
| If something is found | Your doctor advises on next steps immediately | You need to find a doctor to interpret the finding and decide what happens next |
| Scan coordination | Your care team books and coordinates the slot | You arrange directly with the partner imaging centre |
| Usefulness | High — targeted to your clinical situation | Variable — incidental findings are common and their significance is often unclear without a doctor |
What to bring if you are booking without a referral
- Government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence
- Any previous scan reports, biopsy results or blood tests, even older ones — they give the radiologist useful context
- A written note of your symptoms and how long you have had them
- Details of any recent surgery, chemotherapy or radiation — tell the booking team when you call
- A full list of your current medicines and supplements
- If you have diabetes, bring your blood sugar reading from that morning — the team checks this before giving the tracer

What happens to the report when you have no treating doctor?
The radiologist writes a structured report describing what they see in the scan. That report is sent to you or to the centre you nominated when you booked.
A radiologist does not advise on treatment. They are not able to explain what the findings mean for your specific situation — that is a clinical judgement that requires someone who knows your history.
If the scan finds something — expected or not — you will need to take the report to an oncologist or specialist. Building that step into your plan before you scan, not after, saves time when time matters most.
Should you see an oncologist before booking the scan?
If you have a symptom you are worried about, a short consultation with an oncologist before scanning is almost always the better route. The oncologist can assess whether a PET-CT is the right investigation for your situation, or whether a different scan would answer the question more directly.
At CION, a consultation can often be arranged at the same centre and on short notice. If the scan is what your oncologist recommends, they coordinate it with the partner imaging centre.
If you have already had a scan elsewhere and want a second opinion on the report, bring the images and the original report. That is a different appointment and does not require another scan.
Did you know?
Incidental findings — abnormalities detected by chance, unrelated to the reason for the scan — are reported in a meaningful proportion of PET-CT scans. Each one may need further investigation to determine whether it matters.
Without a treating doctor already involved, deciding what to do with an unexpected finding falls entirely on you. This is the core reason a consultation before scanning is worth considering, even when it feels like an extra step.

Frequently asked questions
Is booking a PET-CT without a doctor's prescription legal in India?
Yes. There is no legal requirement for a prescription before booking a PET-CT scan in India. The scan uses ionising radiation and a radioactive tracer, so the imaging centre will ask health questions before proceeding — but a referral is not a legal precondition. AERB regulations govern the safe use of the equipment and tracer; they do not require a prescription for booking.
Who will explain the PET-CT report to me if I have no treating doctor?
The radiologist who reads the scan writes a structured report, but does not typically sit with you to explain it or advise on next steps. If you receive the report without a doctor to interpret it, book an oncologist consultation as soon as possible. Bring both the report and the images — on a CD or USB if the imaging centre provides one. Do not delay if the report mentions any abnormal finding.
Should I see an oncologist before booking the scan?
For most people, yes. An oncologist can assess whether a PET-CT is the right investigation for your specific symptoms, or whether another scan — an MRI, CT or ultrasound — would answer the question better and with lower radiation exposure. Booking the right scan first avoids a second trip. At CION, a consultation is usually available on short notice, and the oncologist will coordinate the imaging if they recommend it.
What do I need to bring on the day of the scan?
Bring a government-issued photo ID, any previous scan reports or biopsy results, and a list of your current medicines. If you have diabetes, bring your blood sugar reading from that morning — the team checks this before injecting the tracer. Arrive on time or a little early. Once the tracer is injected the timing is fixed, and arriving late can mean the scan slot cannot proceed.
How long does the whole PET-CT appointment take?
Allow most of a morning or afternoon. After registration and a health check, the tracer is injected and you rest quietly for roughly an hour while it is absorbed. The scan itself then takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on what area is being covered. Families travelling from other districts should account for the full duration when planning travel — not just the scan time.
What should I do if the scan finds something unexpected?
Do not wait. Book an oncologist consultation as soon as you have the report — ideally within a few days. Bring the images as well as the printed report. An unexpected finding on a PET-CT does not always mean cancer, but it always needs a clinical assessment to determine what it is and what, if anything, needs to happen next. At CION, an appointment can be requested at any of the 35-plus centres across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
