  • Walk-ins are accepted — CION's partner imaging centres do take walk-in patients, subject to that day's schedule.
  • Call before you travel — A phone call early in the day is almost always faster than arriving unannounced.
  • Bring your referral letter — The scan cannot proceed without a request from your doctor. Carry it with you.
  • Urgency helps — If your oncologist has marked the scan urgent, say so when you call — centres try to accommodate time-sensitive requests.

Walk-in PET-CT scans are possible at CION's partner imaging centres in Hyderabad. Same-day slots depend on each centre's schedule — calling early in the morning gives you the best chance. Bring your doctor's referral letter, a government photo ID, and any previous scan reports.

At CION, a whole-body PET-CT starts from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Can you walk in for a PET-CT scan without booking?

Walk-ins are accepted at CION's partner PET-CT imaging centres in Hyderabad. Whether a slot is available that day depends on how the centre's list is running — it varies from day to day and centre to centre.

Same-day scans are most likely when a booked patient cancels, when the day's schedule has space, or when your oncologist has marked the request urgent. Telling the centre the scan is time-sensitive, and the name of your treating team, helps them prioritise.

If same-day is not possible, you will usually be offered the earliest slot in the next day or two. Waiting a short time for a confirmed booking is almost always faster than travelling between centres looking for an immediate walk-in.

What do I need to bring to a PET-CT scan?

  • Doctor's referral letter or request form — the scan cannot proceed without one
  • Government photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport or driving licence)
  • Previous scan reports and images, including any CDs (CT, MRI or prior PET-CT)
  • Full list of current medicines, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations
  • Diabetic patients: morning glucose reading and doctor's instructions for insulin on scan day
  • Loose, comfortable clothing without metal fittings, zips or underwire

How do I get a same-day PET-CT slot?

Call the partner imaging centre as early in the day as possible. Cancellation slots are filled early, and a phone call gives you a much better chance than arriving unannounced.

Give the centre your oncologist's name and clinic, and say clearly whether the scan is marked urgent. If you are having difficulty securing a slot, ask your CION care coordinator to contact the centre directly — a call from the treating team often makes the difference.

If same-day is not available, ask to be placed on the cancellation list. Slots can open through the day, and the centre will call you if something becomes available at short notice.

Book a PET-CT at CION from Rs 10,499 — among the lowest published prices in Hyderabad — with an oncologist-reviewed report and a free Rs 950 consultation, across 4 partner centres. Indicative price, as of September 2026.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a doctor's referral letter for a PET-CT scan?

Yes, a referral or request from your oncologist or treating doctor is required before the imaging centre can proceed. The letter tells the team which body regions to scan and why. If your doctor's clinic is closed and the scan is urgent, contact your CION care team — the request can often be sent electronically so you are not delayed.

How long does a PET-CT scan take from arrival to leaving?

Allow two to three hours in total. After the radiotracer injection you wait quietly while it distributes through the body — this uptake period is the longest part of the visit. The scan itself is considerably shorter. Once it is done you are free to leave. Your appointment letter will give you the specific duration for your scan type.

Can I eat before a PET-CT scan?

No. You need to fast beforehand — the exact duration will be in your appointment instructions. Eating raises your blood glucose, which interferes with how the radiotracer is taken up by tissues and can affect how clearly the scan reads. Water is generally permitted and encouraged. Follow the fasting instructions the imaging centre gives you, because requirements can vary slightly between centres.

I have diabetes — can I still have a same-day PET-CT scan?

Yes, but you must tell the centre when you call, not when you arrive. Diabetic patients need specific preparation instructions around insulin timing and blood glucose, and the centre needs to give you those guidelines in advance. If your glucose is outside the required range when you arrive, the scan may have to be rescheduled. Disclosing your diabetes at the time of booking prevents that.

Will I get the PET-CT report on the same day?

Routine reports are read by a nuclear medicine physician or radiologist and typically take one to two working days. If your oncologist needs the report urgently, that request should be made by your treating team at the time of booking — urgent turnaround is sometimes possible but must be arranged with the centre in advance. Asking after the scan has already been done is usually too late to change the timeline.

What does a PET-CT scan cost?

The cost depends on the body area being scanned, the tracer type, and the specific centre. Any figure quoted online is indicative and may not reflect current rates. The most accurate cost is given by the imaging centre when you have your referral details ready. If you have health insurance or a government scheme, check with your insurer before the scan whether prior authorisation is needed — this is much easier to arrange before the appointment than after.
