CION Cancer Clinics
A liver lesion explained, with the Telugu words families use | CION Cancer Clinics
A liver lesion is any spot or lump that looks different from the rest of the liver on a scan. Families often call it కాలేయంలో మచ్చ or కాలేయంలో గడ్డ, and most turn out not to be cancer. This page explains the report words with their Telugu meanings, the common harmless causes, what happens next, and the signs that mean going to hospital today. At CION Cancer Clinics, our team goes through your scan, blood test and biopsy reports with you and plans the next step.

The short answer
What does "liver lesion" mean in Telugu?
A liver lesion is any spot, patch or lump in the liver that looks different from the rest of it on a scan. In Telugu, families usually say కాలేయంలో మచ్చ (a spot on the liver) or కాలేయంలో గడ్డ (a lump in the liver). The word lesion does not mean cancer. Most lesions found by accident are harmless.
Why the report uses this word
The radiologist who writes the report often cannot say what the spot is from one ultrasound. Lesion is a neutral word that means "something is there, and it needs a name". Indian reports also use SOL, short for space occupying lesion, which means the same thing. Neither word is a diagnosis.
Who this page is written for
It is written in English for the son, daughter or relative who reads English and will explain the report to the family at home. The key words are given in Telugu so you can say them to parents in the words they already use. If you have had cancer elsewhere, a spot on the liver needs a different conversation; read about a lesion found during another cancer's scan.
A spot on the liver is a question, not an answer. The follow-up scan is how it gets answered.Words in Telugu
Which Telugu words will the family use, and what do they mean?
- కాలేయం (kaalēyam)
- The liver. Many people in villages also say liver in English.
- కాలేయంలో మచ్చ
- A spot on the liver. This is the closest everyday phrase for lesion.
- కాలేయంలో గడ్డ
- A lump in the liver. Families often hear this as cancer, but most lumps are not.
- నీటి తిత్తి
- A cyst: a small bag of fluid. Simple liver cysts are common and are usually left alone.
- కొవ్వు కాలేయం
- Fatty liver. A patch of extra or missing fat can look like a spot on ultrasound.
- చీము గడ్డ
- An abscess: a pocket of pus from infection. It usually comes with fever and needs treatment quickly.
- కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం
- A hardened, scarred liver. Doctors call this cirrhosis. A spot in a cirrhotic liver is checked more carefully.
- మళ్ళీ స్కాన్ చేయించాలి
- "The scan must be repeated." This is a normal plan for many small spots, not a sign that the doctor is worried.
Not sure whether this applies to you?
Ask an oncologistWhat it usually is
What is a liver spot most often, if not cancer?
These are far more common than cancer. Only a proper scan, read by a specialist, can tell them apart.
Haemangioma
A harmless tangle of blood vessels, and the commonest solid spot in the liver. Most never grow or cause trouble. More in liver haemangioma.
Simple cyst (నీటి తిత్తి)
A thin bag of clear fluid. Very common, especially as people get older. Usually needs nothing unless it is large and causing discomfort.
Fatty patches
In a fatty liver, some areas hold more or less fat than others, and on ultrasound this can look like a lump. A CT or MRI usually settles it.
Abscess or hydatid cyst
Infections can form a pocket of pus or a parasite cyst. A hydatid cyst must never be needled or drained without specialist planning, because spilling it is dangerous.
Less common, and checked carefully
- Focal nodular hyperplasia, a harmless overgrowth
- Adenoma, a benign growth that sometimes needs watching
- Cancer, either starting in the liver or spread from elsewhere
Do not wait for the next appointment if the person vomits blood, passes black stools, becomes newly confused or very sleepy, has yellow eyes (కామెర్లు) together with fever, or has high fever with shivering and pain under the right ribs. Go to the nearest emergency department today and take the scan report. If the report mentions cirrhosis, hepatitis B or C, or the word suspicious, see a liver specialist or oncologist this week.

The usual path
What happens after a spot is found on the liver?
-
The doctor reads the full report
The impression line at the bottom matters most. Your doctor will also ask about alcohol, hepatitis, diabetes and any past cancer. Answer honestly; nobody is judging.
-
A clearer scan is often arranged
Usually a triple-phase CT or a liver MRI, which shows how the spot takes up contrast dye. CION arranges these through accredited diagnostic partners.
-
Blood tests are added
Liver function tests, hepatitis B and C tests, and sometimes AFP, a blood marker for liver cancer. A normal AFP does not rule cancer out, and a raised one does not prove it.
-
The plan: watch, test further or treat
Many spots are simply watched with a repeat scan. A biopsy is not always needed. If the scan looks like cancer, the tumour board of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and liver doctors plans the next step together.
-
A date for the next check
Write down when the repeat scan is due and which type. Missing it is the commonest way a spot that needed watching gets missed.
Commonly believed
What do families often believe about a liver గడ్డ?
The word only means lump. Most lumps found by accident are cysts, haemangiomas or fatty patches. A proper scan decides, not the word.
Most liver spots, harmless or not, cause no pain. The repeat scan is how a harmless spot is confirmed as harmless. Please keep the date.
No tonic or detox shrinks a liver spot, and some herbal products can harm a weak liver. Tell the doctor about anything the person takes; it helps, and nobody will scold you.
Families decide this in their own way. But the person with the spot usually needs to answer questions about their health and attend the scan. A calm, simple explanation in Telugu often worries them less than silence.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your spot is. Only a specialist looking at the images, with the blood tests and the person's history, can do that. Please do not use this page to decide that a scan is unnecessary.
Who this page does not apply to
If liver cancer has already been confirmed, this page is not the right one; start with the main liver cancer pages instead. A liver mass in a child is a different subject, handled by children's cancer teams. If the family wants more Telugu words, the liver cancer glossary in Telugu lists them.
Translation has limits
Telugu words differ from district to district, and some medical terms have no exact Telugu word. When in doubt, ask the doctor to explain in simple words and repeat it back to them in Telugu to check you have it right.
You can call the helpline and speak in Telugu. Read out the report and someone will explain what it says and what to do next.Questions we are asked
Common questions about a liver lesion, from Telugu families
What is the Telugu word for liver lesion?
There is no single fixed word. Families usually say కాలేయంలో మచ్చ for a spot or కాలేయంలో గడ్డ for a lump. Both are everyday words and neither means cancer. The doctor uses lesion because the spot has not yet been named.
Is a liver lesion the same as liver cancer?
No. Lesion is a general word for anything that looks different on a scan. Most lesions found by accident turn out to be cysts, haemangiomas or fatty patches. Some need watching, and a few are cancer, which is why the follow-up scan matters.
What does SOL in liver mean on the report?
SOL stands for space occupying lesion: something is taking up space in the liver. It is a description, not a diagnosis. It usually leads to a CT or MRI to find out what the spot actually is.
My father has hepatitis B. Does that change things?
Yes. In someone with hepatitis B or cirrhosis, a new spot is checked more carefully and sooner, because liver cancer is more likely in that liver. Arrange a visit with a liver specialist or oncologist this week, and bring all old scans.
Can we wait until we come to Hyderabad?
If there are no warning signs and the report sounds routine, a short wait to plan travel is usually reasonable. Call ahead so the scan and blood tests can be arranged on the same trip. If any warning sign appears, go to the nearest hospital first.
Will they need to put a needle into the liver?
Often not. Many liver spots are diagnosed from a good CT or MRI alone. When a biopsy is needed, CION arranges it through partner hospitals and the doctor explains why first. A suspected hydatid cyst is never needled without specialist planning.
Should my mother stop eating protein because of the spot?
No. Cutting dal, eggs or milk does not shrink a liver spot, and people with liver disease usually need enough protein to stay strong. Ask the doctor or a dietitian before changing the diet.
Can someone at CION explain the report in Telugu?
Yes. Call the helpline and ask to speak in Telugu. Read out the impression line of the report, and someone will explain it plainly and tell you which specialist to see. One helpline serves every CION centre.
