Crowdfunding for liver cancer treatment or a liver transplant | CION Cancer Clinics
Crowdfunding can help pay part of the cost of liver cancer treatment or a liver transplant, but it rarely covers everything. It works best after you have checked insurance, schemes and relief funds, to fill the gap that is left. This page explains what to check in a platform, how to set a target from a written estimate, how to write an honest appeal, and why treatment should not wait for the money. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer
Can crowdfunding pay for liver cancer treatment or a transplant?
It can help, but it rarely pays for everything. Many Indian families now raise part of the cost of liver cancer treatment, or of a liver transplant, through online crowdfunding platforms, where friends, relatives and strangers donate to a named patient's appeal.
Where it fits in the money plan
Crowdfunding works best as one part of a wider plan. Check scheme and insurance cover first, then a relief fund, then crowdfunding for the gap that is left. Our page on whether health insurance covers liver cancer is a good first step. Money raised online arrives in stages and depends on how widely the appeal is shared, so it is hard to time against a treatment date.
Why transplant appeals are different
A liver transplant costs far more than most other liver cancer treatment, and it is quoted separately by each licensed transplant centre. Transplant appeals therefore aim higher, need a very clear estimate, and draw more questions from donors. The transplant centre's financial counsellor should help you set the target.
This page is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Ask a chartered accountant or the platform itself about the rules that apply to you.Choosing a platform
What should you check before choosing a crowdfunding platform?
Platforms differ more in their rules than in how they look. Read the terms before you share the link with anyone.
Fees and deductions
Most platforms keep a share of what is raised, and payment gateways take their own charge. Ask exactly what reaches the patient or the hospital from every donation.
Where the money goes
Some platforms pay the hospital directly against its bills. Others pay a family bank account. Paying the hospital directly often builds donor trust.
Ask the platform
- Who receives the funds
- What documents release each payment
- What happens to money left over
Medical verification
Reputable platforms check the diagnosis and estimate with the hospital before an appeal goes live. That check protects you, and it protects donors from false appeals.
Support while the appeal runs
Some platforms help write the appeal and share it. Ask who answers donors' questions and how you will post updates.
Indicative cost
How much should a liver cancer appeal try to raise?
Set the target from a written hospital estimate, not a guess. These 2026 Hyderabad ranges show what common treatments usually cost. They are not quotes.
TACE, per session
Some people need more than one session, so ask how many are planned.
Liver resection, laparoscopic
Removing part of the liver through small cuts, when it suits the tumour.
Systemic therapy, per cycle
Immunotherapy, targeted therapy or chemotherapy. It repeats, so plan for the whole course.
Full multi-step treatment
When several treatments are combined over the whole course.
Indicative only. A liver transplant, Y-90, scans and biopsy are quoted separately and vary by hospital and by the plan. Insurance, Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat can change what you need to raise a great deal. Ask for a written, itemised estimate and use that figure on the appeal.
Leave a number, we will call you
One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.
Setting it up
How do you start a crowdfunding appeal for liver cancer?
Get the estimate and the plan in writing
Ask the treating hospital for a signed, itemised estimate and a short letter confirming the diagnosis. Most platforms need both before they will verify the appeal.
Agree what the patient is happy to share
An appeal is public and stays online. Ask the patient which details, photos and reports they are comfortable showing, and leave out anything they are not.
Write the appeal honestly
Say what the illness is, what the treatment is, what it costs and what is already covered. Do not promise donors an outcome. Doctors cannot promise one either.
Share it with people who know you
Most donations come from family, friends, colleagues and community groups, often through WhatsApp. One clear message with the link works better than many forwards.
Post updates and account for the money
Tell donors when treatment starts and how funds were used. Keep every bill. It builds trust, and it helps if anyone asks questions later.
Commonly believed
What families often get wrong about crowdfunding
Very few appeals reach a wide audience. Most raise a part of the target from people the family already knows. Plan for the rest from schemes, insurance or a relief fund.
Some liver cancer treatments are only possible while the tumour is small and the liver is working well. Ask your oncologist how long it is safe to wait. Do not let the appeal set the treatment date.
It should not. Living donation in India is tightly regulated, and buying or selling an organ is illegal. A crowdfunding appeal should raise money for care only. Questions about a donor belong with the licensed transplant centre.
You do not have to explain why the liver became unwell. Alcohol, hepatitis B or C and fatty liver are risk factors, not anyone's fault. Share only what the patient chooses to share.
Side by side
Crowdfunding, relief funds or schemes: how do they compare?
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you how much an appeal will raise, which platform suits you best, or how tax and gift rules apply to the money. Platform terms change often. Read them yourself, and ask a chartered accountant if a large sum is involved.
Who this does not apply to
If your treatment is already covered by insurance, Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS or ESI, you may not need an appeal at all. Families who have not yet checked the Chief Minister's and PM relief funds should look at those first. For transplant planning, our page on transplant cost and what it includes explains the larger picture.
Who can help
At CION centres, our team can give you the written diagnosis, plan and itemised estimate a platform asks for. For a transplant, the estimate comes from the licensed transplant centre your team refers you to. We cannot recommend a platform or promise any result.
If a stranger offers to run your appeal for a large upfront fee, check carefully before you agree.Questions we are asked
Common questions about crowdfunding for liver cancer
Is crowdfunding for medical treatment legal in India?
Yes, raising money from donors for genuine treatment is common and lawful. The appeal must be honest about the illness and the cost. Raising money for an organ, or offering payment to a donor, is illegal. Ask a chartered accountant how any large sum should be handled.
Can the money be paid straight to the hospital?
Many platforms offer this, releasing funds against the hospital's bills or estimate. It reassures donors that the money is used for treatment. Ask the hospital's billing team whether they accept payments from your chosen platform before the appeal goes live.
What documents does a platform usually ask for?
Usually a signed hospital estimate, a letter or report confirming the diagnosis, the patient's identity proof, and bank details of the person or hospital receiving the money. Some also ask to speak to the treating doctor or the hospital to verify the appeal.
Can we raise money for a transplant before a date is fixed?
Families sometimes start once the transplant centre has assessed the patient and given an estimate. Be clear in the appeal that the patient is being assessed, and that the transplant depends on the medical team's decision. Never suggest a date or outcome you cannot be sure of.
What happens if treatment plans change?
Treatment can change after a new scan or tumour board review. Tell donors honestly in an update. Check the platform's rules on how money can be used if the plan changes, and on what happens to any money that is left over.
Should the patient's name and photo appear on the appeal?
Only if the patient agrees. A name and a recent photo often help people trust an appeal, but the page stays public. Some families use a first name only. Never post reports that show details the patient wants kept private.
Can we use crowdfunding alongside Aarogyasri or insurance?
Yes. Many families use crowdfunding for what the scheme or policy does not cover, such as some medicines, travel or a procedure outside the package. State in the appeal what is already covered, so donors understand the gap you are trying to fill.
How can CION help with a crowdfunding appeal?
Our team can provide the written treatment plan and itemised estimate most platforms need, and answer a platform's verification call with the patient's consent. Call the CION helpline, say you are setting up an appeal, and someone will explain the papers.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
