Y-90 radioembolisation cost in India: what you will pay for | CION Cancer Clinics
Y-90 radioembolisation usually costs more than a single round of TACE, and there is no fixed national price. Each hospital quotes it separately, because most of the bill is the radioactive beads ordered for one patient. This page explains what makes up the bill, how it compares with other liver treatments, how to get a written estimate and who Y-90 does not suit. At CION Cancer Clinics, a multidisciplinary tumour board weighs your liver function and your scans before recommending any treatment.

The short answer
How much does Y-90 radioembolisation cost in India?
Y-90 is usually one of the most expensive treatments offered for a liver tumour, and it costs noticeably more than a single round of TACE. There is no fixed national price. Each hospital quotes it separately, because most of the bill is the radioactive beads themselves, which are ordered for one patient and one dose.
What Y-90 is, in one line
Y-90, also called TARE or radioembolisation, sends millions of tiny radioactive beads through a thin tube into the artery feeding the tumour. The beads lodge there and give off radiation from inside the liver. The technique is explained on the Y-90 radioembolisation page. This page is about the bill.
Which liver cancer this page is about
Y-90 is used both for cancer that started in the liver (hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC) and for cancer that spread to the liver from somewhere else, often the bowel. The cost questions are much the same. If the cancer started elsewhere, read Y-90 for liver metastases as well, because the decision is made differently.
CION does not publish a rupee figure for Y-90. Any number you see online is one hospital's quote on one day.Indicative cost
How does the Y-90 bill compare with other liver treatments?
These are 2026 Hyderabad estimates that CION already publishes for other treatments. Y-90 itself is quoted separately by the hospital that does it.
Y-90 radioembolisation
Includes the mapping procedure, the beads and the treatment day. Ask for every part to be written down.
TACE, per session
Often repeated, so the total depends on how many sessions are needed.
SBRT radiation, per course
Focused external radiation, an option for some single tumours.
Systemic therapy, per cycle
Immunotherapy or targeted tablets, sometimes given alongside or after Y-90.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates, not a quote. Your own figure depends on the hospital, the plan and your insurance or government scheme. Scheme rules and covered procedures change, so check cover for Y-90 at the time of treatment. Call the helpline for help reading an estimate against your own cover.
What moves the bill
Why do two Y-90 quotes look so different?
Two families with the same diagnosis can get very different quotes. These are the usual reasons.
The beads and the dose
The beads are the largest single part of the bill. They are made outside India and ordered for each patient. The dose depends on the size of the tumour and how much of the liver is being treated.
The mapping procedure first
Before Y-90, a separate angiogram and scan check where the beads would travel. This is a procedure in its own right, billed on its own. Read why the mapping scan is needed.
One side of the liver or both
If tumours sit in both halves of the liver, the treatment is often split into two separate sittings. That can mean a second set of beads and a second hospital stay.
Everything around the procedure
Often left off the first quote
- Scans before and after treatment
- Blood tests and liver function checks
- The hospital stay and medicines
- Travel and stay in Hyderabad for district families

Before you agree
How do you get a written Y-90 estimate you can trust?
Confirm Y-90 is the right plan first
Ask whether the tumour board has looked at your scans and agreed that Y-90 suits this tumour and this liver. A price for the wrong treatment is no saving.
Ask for an itemised estimate
Request the mapping procedure, the beads, the treatment day, the stay and the follow-up scans as separate lines. A single total hides what has been left out.
Ask what happens if mapping rules it out
Sometimes the mapping scan shows too many beads would reach the lungs. Ask what you pay in that case, and what the next option would be.
Check your cover in writing
Ask your insurer or the scheme desk whether Y-90 is covered and what paperwork they need. Get the answer in writing before the beads are ordered.
Commonly believed
Is a more expensive treatment always a better one?
Price reflects what the beads cost to make and ship, not how well they work for you. For many tumours, TACE and Y-90 are both reasonable, and the team chooses on the tumour and the liver. Read whether Y-90 is worth the extra cost.
Y-90 can only go ahead if the mapping scan shows it is safe. Some people are found unsuitable at that stage. That is a safety check working, not a failure.
Y-90 has been used for many years. Some policies and schemes cover it and some do not. Ask your insurer directly rather than assuming either way.
Wait until the team has confirmed Y-90 is the right treatment and you have a written estimate. Many families find the plan changes once all the scans are reviewed.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your Y-90 will cost. Only the hospital doing the procedure can quote it, once your scans have been reviewed and the dose worked out. It also cannot tell you whether Y-90 is right for you. That decision belongs to a multidisciplinary team looking at your tumour, your liver function and your general health together.
Who this does not apply to
Y-90 does not suit everyone. It is usually not offered when the liver is badly failing, when bilirubin (the yellow pigment behind jaundice) is high, or when the cancer has spread widely outside the liver. It is also ruled out when the mapping scan shows too much flow to the lungs or gut. If any of these apply, the cost question does not arise. See who is suitable for Y-90.
What CION does here
CION's team reviews your scans, explains whether Y-90 or another option fits, and coordinates Y-90 through accredited partner hospitals with interventional radiology. We can help you read an estimate and prepare scheme or insurance paperwork.
Questions we are asked
Common questions about the cost of Y-90
Why is Y-90 more expensive than TACE?
Mostly because of the radioactive beads. They are manufactured outside India, ordered for each patient and lose their strength quickly, so they cannot be stocked. A separate mapping procedure is also needed first. TACE uses medicines and particles that are cheaper and easier to keep on hand.
Is Y-90 a single treatment or several?
Often a single treatment after the mapping procedure. If tumours are in both halves of the liver, it may be split into two sittings. Occasionally it is repeated later. Ask at the start how many sittings your team expects, because each one adds to the bill.
Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover Y-90?
Government schemes list which procedures they cover, and those lists change. Whether Y-90 is included, and at which hospitals, must be checked at the time you need it. The scheme desk at the treating hospital can tell you. CION's team can help you prepare the paperwork.
Does private health insurance pay for Y-90?
Some policies do and some limit or exclude newer procedures. Read the policy wording, then ask the insurer in writing before treatment. Pre-authorisation is usually needed. See insurance for TACE and Y-90 for the questions to ask.
Do I pay for the mapping scan if Y-90 is then cancelled?
Usually yes, because the mapping procedure has already been done. Ask the hospital in advance what you will be charged if mapping shows Y-90 is not safe. In that case the team will suggest another option, such as TACE or systemic treatment.
Is Y-90 available in Hyderabad?
Y-90 is offered at a limited number of hospitals with interventional radiology and nuclear medicine together. Availability can depend on bead supply. Read where TACE and Y-90 are available and ask your team before you travel.
Are there costs after the treatment itself?
Yes. Follow-up scans and blood tests check how the tumour and the liver respond. Some people need medicines for tiredness, nausea or pain. Some go on to other treatment. Ask for an estimate of the first few follow-up visits along with the main quote.
Can CION give me a quote today?
Not before your scans and reports have been reviewed. Once the team agrees Y-90 suits you, we coordinate with a partner hospital and help you get an itemised estimate. Call the helpline to start, and keep your recent scans and blood reports ready.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
