The short answer
How much does liver cancer medicine cost each month?
In Hyderabad, one cycle of systemic treatment for liver cancer usually costs somewhere between ₹80,000 and ₹3,00,000, and sometimes more. What a month costs depends on which medicine you are given, whether it is a tablet or a drip, and whether a branded or a generic version is used.
What systemic treatment means here
Systemic treatment is medicine that travels through the whole body. For liver cancer it means immunotherapy given as a drip, targeted tablets such as sorafenib or lenvatinib, and occasionally chemotherapy. It is usually the main treatment when the cancer is too large or too spread out for surgery, ablation or TACE. You can read about the choices on systemic treatment options.
Why there is no single monthly figure
A tablet is taken every day and bought by the strip, so the bill is monthly. A drip is given in cycles, often every few weeks, so some months hold two visits and some hold one. On top of the medicine sit the blood tests, the scans that check response and the visits themselves.
This page is about primary liver cancer that started in the liver. Cancer that spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or elsewhere is treated with the medicines for that original cancer.Indicative cost
What systemic treatment usually costs in Hyderabad
These are 2026 Hyderabad estimates, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the medicine, the version and your cover.
Systemic therapy, per cycle
Covers immunotherapy drips and targeted tablets. The lower end usually reflects generic tablets. The upper end usually reflects branded infusions given together.
Full multi-step treatment
When systemic treatment is one part of a longer plan that also includes TACE, ablation or surgery, the whole journey can sit in this range.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. Scans, blood tests, hepatitis medicines and hospital stays for side effects are quoted separately. Insurance and government schemes can change what you pay out of pocket a great deal, and their rules change, so check your own cover at the time. Ask for a written, itemised estimate before you start.
What moves the bill
Why does one family pay so much more than another?
Two people with the same diagnosis can see very different monthly bills. These are the usual reasons.
Which medicine
The usual first choice, atezolizumab with bevacizumab, is two drips given together. Tablets such as sorafenib and lenvatinib are a different price class. Your oncologist chooses on the cancer and your liver, and cost is discussed openly alongside that.
Branded or generic
Generic sorafenib and lenvatinib are sold in India, and biosimilar versions of bevacizumab exist. Some immunotherapy medicines have no cheaper version yet. Ask which versions are available for your plan.
Your weight and dose changes
Some doses depend on body weight. Side effects can lead to a lower dose or a pause, which changes what a month costs.
What sits around the medicine
Regular blood tests, response scans, and medicines that keep hepatitis B under control all add up.
Often forgotten
- Travel from the district for each visit
- A short admission if a side effect needs it
- Medicines for diarrhoea, rash or blood pressure

Side by side
How do tablets and drips differ on the bill?
Before the first cycle
How do you get a realistic monthly figure in writing?
Ask for the plan by name
Ask which medicine is planned, how often it is given and how the team will know it is working. A cost only makes sense once you know these.
Ask for an itemised estimate
Ask for medicine, day care, blood tests and scans as separate lines. Ask whether a generic or biosimilar is an option and what it changes.
Check your cover early
Call your insurer or TPA and ask how they treat oral cancer medicines and day-care infusions. For Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS or ESI, ask what is covered for your plan today, because the details change. CION helps with the scheme paperwork.
Plan for three months, not one
Response is usually checked with a scan after the first few cycles. Budgeting for that first stretch avoids stopping a medicine early only because of money.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your own month will cost. That depends on the medicine your oncologist chooses for your cancer and your liver, the version used, and how your body handles it. Nobody can give an honest figure before they have seen your scans and blood reports.
It cannot tell you how long treatment will last
Systemic treatment usually continues while it is working and while side effects are manageable. Some people stay on it for a long time and some stop early. That is why cost is best planned in stages, reviewed at each scan. The page on how long systemic treatment continues explains how that decision is made.
Who this does not apply to
If your cancer is small and can be removed, ablated or treated with TACE, your costs look different; see procedure costs compared. If the cancer spread to the liver from elsewhere, the medicines and prices are those of the original cancer. If your liver is badly weakened, systemic treatment may not be offered at all, and the conversation turns to comfort and symptom care.
Questions we are asked
Common questions about the monthly cost of liver cancer medicines
Are tablets cheaper than immunotherapy for liver cancer?
Often, especially when generic sorafenib or lenvatinib is used. Cheaper is not the same as right for you, though. For many people immunotherapy with bevacizumab is the usual first choice, and tablets are chosen when it does not suit. Ask your oncologist to explain both the medical and the money side.
Is generic sorafenib or lenvatinib as good as the brand?
Generic medicines sold legally in India must contain the same active medicine. Many families use them. Ask your oncologist which manufacturer they are comfortable with, buy from a licensed pharmacy, and keep the same version where you can so that side effects are easier to follow.
Does Aarogyasri pay for liver cancer medicines?
Schemes such as Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat cover some cancer treatments through listed packages, and what is included changes over time. Whether your planned medicine is covered has to be checked at the time. See does Aarogyasri cover liver cancer treatment for how to ask.
Will my health insurance cover the tablets?
It depends on the policy. Many policies pay well for day-care drips but are less clear about tablets taken at home. Ask your insurer in writing before you buy the first month. This is general information, not advice about your policy, so your insurer or TPA has the final word.
Can we stop for a month if money runs short?
Please do not stop without talking to your oncologist first. A gap can let the cancer grow. Tell the team honestly about the money problem. There may be a cheaper version, a scheme route or a change of plan that keeps treatment going safely.
What else costs money besides the medicine?
Blood tests before each cycle, response scans, medicines for side effects, hepatitis B tablets if needed, and travel from the district. A short hospital stay for a side effect is possible. Ask for these to be listed in your estimate so they do not come as a surprise.
Is chemotherapy used for liver cancer, and is it cheaper?
Standard chemotherapy plays a smaller part in the common type of liver cancer, called hepatocellular carcinoma, than immunotherapy and tablets. It is used more in bile duct cancer. Price alone should not decide this. Your oncologist will explain which fits your cancer.
How do I get an estimate for my own plan?
Bring your scans, biopsy report and recent blood tests to a CION oncologist. Once the plan is clear, ask for an itemised estimate and help with insurance or scheme papers. Call the helpline if you are not sure where to start, and someone will guide you.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
