Liver transplant cost: what the bill includes and how to plan for it | CION Cancer Clinics

A liver transplant costs far more than any other liver cancer treatment, and there is no single honest figure. The bill depends on the donor route, intensive care, complications and lifelong medicines. This page explains what a transplant estimate should include, how a living or deceased donor changes it, and how to get a written quote from the transplant centre. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer

How much does a liver transplant cost in India?

A liver transplant is by far the most expensive treatment in liver cancer, much higher than surgery, ablation or TACE. There is no honest single figure, because the bill depends on the type of donor, how long you stay in intensive care, any complications and the medicines you take for life afterwards.

Who this page is for

It is for families whose doctor has said a transplant may be an option for primary liver cancer, usually hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, cancer that starts in the liver cells) in a liver already scarred by cirrhosis. If the cancer spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or elsewhere, a transplant is almost never the treatment, and the costs on this page do not apply to you.

Why the figure is quoted by the transplant centre

Liver transplants are done only at licensed transplant centres. Each centre prices its own programme, and each family's path is different. CION does not perform transplants. Our surgical oncologists and tumour board help you understand whether a transplant fits, and coordinate the referral. The written estimate itself comes from the transplant centre. See who a liver transplant is for before you plan the money.

Indicative cost

How does a transplant compare with other liver cancer treatments?

These are 2026 Hyderabad estimates, not quotes. They show where a transplant sits against the treatments CION publishes ranges for.

Quoted separately

Liver transplant

Priced by each licensed transplant centre. Ask for a written, itemised estimate covering both donor and recipient.

₹3,00,000 – ₹6,00,000

Liver resection, open

Removing the part of the liver that holds the tumour, when the rest of the liver is strong enough.

₹75,000 – ₹2,50,000

TACE, per session

Often used to hold the cancer in check while someone waits for a transplant.

₹3,00,000 – ₹12,00,000 or more

Full multi-step treatment

Several treatments combined over time, without a transplant.

Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. The final figure depends on the hospital, the plan and your insurance or scheme. Transplant pricing is not included here because it varies too widely between centres to give a fair range. Call the helpline and we will help you ask the right questions.

Inside the bill

What does a liver transplant estimate usually include?

A transplant is not one bill. It is four stages, and families are often surprised by the ones before and after the operation.

The assessment

Blood tests, scans, heart and lung checks, a psychological and social review, and dental and infection screening. Read about every test in the assessment.

The operation and intensive care

The surgery, the anaesthetic, the stay in intensive care and on the ward. This is the largest single part.

Complications such as bleeding, infection or a return to theatre add to it.

The donor's care

With a living donor, the donor's own tests, operation, stay and follow-up are usually billed as part of the package. Ask whether they are.

Life after the operation

Medicines that stop the body rejecting the new liver are taken for life, with regular blood tests and clinic visits.

Often left out of the quote

  • Anti-rejection medicines after discharge
  • Readmissions for infection or rejection
  • Travel and stay near the centre

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Side by side

Does a living donor or a deceased donor change the cost?

Living donor Deceased donor (through Jeevandan)
Two operations, so two sets of surgical and hospital costs One operation, for the person receiving the liver
The date can be planned, so waiting costs are lower Waiting time is unpredictable, and treatment to hold the cancer may be needed meanwhile
The donor faces real surgical risk and a recovery of their own No living person takes on surgical risk
Legal approval by an authorisation committee is required Registration on the state waiting list is required

Before you agree

How do you get a written transplant estimate you can trust?

Ask for it itemised, in writing

Request separate lines for assessment, the operation, intensive care, ward days, the donor's care and the first months of medicines. A single round figure tells you very little.

Ask what is not included

Ask how complications, readmissions and long-term medicines are charged. These are where bills grow most.

Check insurance and schemes early

Cover for transplant differs from cover for other liver cancer treatment. Read insurance cover for a liver transplant and confirm with your insurer before the assessment starts.

Plan the months that follow

Budget for life after discharge, not only the hospital stay. Our team can help you list the costs and the paperwork.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you what your transplant will cost, or whether a transplant is right for you. That depends on the size and number of tumours, how well your liver is working, your general fitness and the centre you go to. Only the transplant team, after a full assessment, can give you a real figure.

Who this does not apply to

Most people with liver cancer do not need, or cannot have, a transplant. If the cancer has spread outside the liver, has grown into the main blood vessels, or came from another organ, a transplant is not offered. Those families should read about surgery, ablation, TACE and Y-90 costs instead.

Rules that change

Jeevandan and national organ rules are described here as of 2026. They change, and must be checked with the transplant centre at the time. Buying or selling an organ is illegal in India. Nobody, including CION, can move you up a waiting list.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver transplant cost

Why will no one give me a single transplant price?

Because the bill depends on things nobody knows in advance: how long you stay in intensive care, whether there are complications, and which donor route you take. Each licensed centre prices its own programme. A written, itemised estimate after the assessment is the most reliable figure you will get.

Does CION perform liver transplants?

No. Transplants happen only at licensed transplant centres. CION's surgical oncologists and tumour board review your scans and reports, help you understand whether a transplant fits, and coordinate the referral. We continue treatment that keeps the cancer in check while you are being assessed or waiting.

Is a deceased donor transplant cheaper?

Usually only one operation is billed, which lowers the hospital cost. But waiting time is unpredictable, and treatments such as TACE may be needed to hold the cancer while you wait. Those add cost of their own. Read about Jeevandan in Telangana for how the list works.

Who pays for the living donor's care?

In most programmes the donor's tests, operation and recovery are part of the family's transplant estimate. Ask the centre to show the donor's costs as separate lines. Donating part of a liver is a major operation with real risk to a healthy person, and the decision must be the donor's own.

How much do medicines after a transplant cost?

Anti-rejection medicines are needed for life, alongside regular blood tests and clinic visits. The cost varies with the medicines chosen, how much is needed and whether generic versions are used. Ask the transplant centre for a monthly estimate so you can plan beyond the hospital stay.

Does Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover a transplant?

Government schemes have at times included liver transplant for eligible families at empanelled centres, but the rules, packages and listed hospitals change. Check with the scheme desk at the transplant centre at the time. Our page on Aarogyasri and liver cancer explains how to ask.

Can we pay a donor or arrange one through an agent?

No. Buying or selling an organ is illegal in India, and every living donation is reviewed by an authorisation committee. Anyone offering a donor for money is breaking the law. CION does not arrange donors and cannot influence who receives a liver from the waiting list.

What should we do first if a transplant was mentioned?

Gather every scan, report and blood result, and ask for a tumour board review to confirm a transplant is the right path. Then ask the transplant centre for a written estimate. Call the CION helpline if you are unsure where to start, and someone will guide you through the next steps.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it

Insurance, schemes and payment

What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
