CION Cancer Clinics
How to apply for Aarogyasri for liver cancer, step by step | CION Cancer Clinics
You take your card and reports to a hospital empanelled for your treatment, and its scheme desk asks the trust for approval before treatment starts. Your part is to have the right papers ready and the diagnosis confirmed. In liver cancer each step, such as TACE, tablets or surgery, usually needs its own approval. This page walks through the papers, the route and what to do if a request is declined. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.
The short answer
How do you use Aarogyasri for liver cancer?
You do not apply to the scheme on your own for each treatment. You take your card and your reports to a hospital empanelled for the treatment you need, and the hospital's scheme desk sends a request to the trust for approval before treatment starts. Your part is to have the right papers ready and the diagnosis confirmed.
Aarogyasri is Telangana's scheme. If your family's card was issued in Andhra Pradesh, the scheme is Dr NTR Vaidya Seva, and the route is similar but runs through a different trust. Read how the two schemes differ if you are not sure which card you hold.
Why liver cancer needs more than one approval
Liver cancer care is often a sequence: perhaps TACE first, then tablets, then a scan and a decision. Each step usually needs its own approval. Families who expect one approval for everything are often caught out halfway through treatment.
Scheme rules and package lists change. Check every step with the scheme desk at the time. Before the first visit
Which papers should you have ready?
Missing or mismatched papers cause more delay than anything else. Gather these before you travel to Hyderabad.
Identity and eligibility
The scheme card or the ration card it is linked to, and the patient's Aadhaar. The name and age must match across them.
Check carefully
- Spelling of the patient's name
- The patient is listed as a family member
- The card is current, not lapsed
The diagnosis
Scan reports and films, the biopsy report if there is one, and blood test results including liver function tests and AFP, a blood marker often raised in liver cancer. Bring originals and copies.
Earlier treatment
Discharge summaries, previous approval letters and any prescription for hepatitis B or C medicines. These tell the team and the trust what has already been done.
Contact details
A working mobile number for the family member handling the paperwork. Approvals and queries often arrive by message, and a missed query can hold up treatment.
Step by step
What happens between the first visit and treatment?
Registration at the scheme desk
The hospital's scheme facilitator, often called an Aarogyamithra, checks your card on the trust's system and registers the patient.
Confirming the diagnosis
The doctors confirm what kind of cancer it is and how far it has spread. A liver cancer can be confirmed on a specialist scan or a biopsy. Either way the report is needed for the request.
The treatment plan
The team decides the treatment, based on the tumour, how well the liver works and how fit the patient is. The plan is matched to a listed package where one exists.
Pre-authorisation
The hospital sends the request with your reports to the trust. The trust may approve it, ask a question or decline. Treatment under the scheme waits for approval.
Treatment and discharge
After treatment you receive a discharge summary. Keep it safe. The next step in your plan will need a fresh request that refers back to it.
Leave a number, we will call you
One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.
Side by side
Is the route different in an emergency?
Never delay going to hospital for those emergency signs because of scheme paperwork. Go to hospital today.
Commonly believed
Four things families assume about applying
You do not. The request is made by the empanelled hospital through its scheme desk. Be wary of anyone who asks for money to speed up an approval.
An approval covers one listed treatment. A second TACE, a change to tablets or a new operation each needs its own request. See what Aarogyasri does not cover to plan for the gaps.
A decline is about the payment rule, not about whether treatment is possible. Ask the scheme desk for the reason in writing. Sometimes a missing report is all that is needed, and sometimes another scheme or a relief fund can help.
Please do not. Alcohol, hepatitis and other causes are risk factors, not faults. The doctors need the full history to choose safe treatment, and a hidden history can make a treatment unsafe for the liver.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether your card is active, whether your treatment is on the current package list, or how long an approval will take. Those answers come from the scheme desk and the trust, and they change. This page is general information, not legal advice. For a problem with the card itself, ask the government office that issued it.
Who this does not apply to
If you hold only private insurance, CGHS, ECHS or ESI cover, those schemes run on their own rules. Read whether health insurance covers liver cancer or Ayushman Bharat and liver cancer instead. A liver transplant also runs under separate rules.
At CION, the team helps families gather documents and prepare scheme requests, and explains what each approval includes. One helpline serves every centre.
Questions we are asked
Common questions about applying for Aarogyasri
Can we apply before the cancer is confirmed?
You can register at the scheme desk with your card, but a treatment package is approved against a confirmed diagnosis. Rules on paying for tests before that point vary. Keep every bill and report from the earliest scans, because they may be asked for when the treatment request goes in.
How do we know a hospital is empanelled?
Ask the hospital's scheme desk directly, and ask whether it is empanelled for the specific liver treatment you have been advised, not just for the scheme in general. A hospital can be listed for some treatments and not others. Check before travelling from the district.
What if the patient's name differs on the card and Aadhaar?
This is one of the most common reasons for delay. The correction is made through the office that issued the card or the Aadhaar, not through the hospital. Start the correction as soon as you notice it, and tell the scheme desk so they know what to expect.
Does each TACE session need a new application?
Usually each session needs its own request, often with a fresh scan showing why another session is advised. The rules can change, so ask the scheme desk before each one. Read about what TACE involves so you know what the team is asking for.
Who should handle the paperwork in the family?
One person, ideally someone who can visit the hospital and keep a single file of every report and letter. Many families choose the son or daughter who reads English. Make sure that person's mobile number is the one the scheme desk has on record.
What if the request is declined?
Ask for the reason in writing. A missing report or a package mismatch can sometimes be corrected and resubmitted. If the treatment is not on the list at all, ask for a written estimate and look at other routes, such as relief fund applications.
Can we use the scheme if we have private insurance?
The rules on combining them depend on the scheme and your insurer, and they change. Tell the billing team about every cover you hold at the very start. They can explain which one is used for which part of treatment, so nothing is claimed twice or missed.
Can CION apply on our behalf?
The team helps you gather documents and prepare the scheme request, and explains what an approval does and does not cover. The final decision always rests with the scheme's trust. Call the helpline with your card type and reports ready, and someone will tell you which centre handles your scheme.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
